Is China toying with us? A mass of Chinese-made product recalls have headlined the news of late ... poison-contaminated pet food, poison-contaminated toothpaste, children's toys with lead-based paint ... what's going on?
Are prominent American companies risking their reputations by outsourcing to China? Will Mattel and Fisher-Price be trusted by consumers in the future? Now that practically every product we purchase is made in China or some other overseas manufacturer, does the U.S. have adequate quality control to ensure the safety of American consumers? These are questions Americans are beginning to ask....

These are questions we should have been asking a long time ago. You should have added tainted fish to the list.....Remember, what seems like a long time ago now, Walmart touting the "Made in the USA label"? I dare you to go find something at walmart now that is actually "Made in the USA".
I've been concerned about this problem for a long time. Remember when the plane was forced down in China about six years ago? I refused to buy anything from China at that time and had a dickens of a time finding stuff.
Wal-Mart has only responded to what the consumers expect -- low prices -- but at what cost? By wanting the lowest price we have helped create that monster.
My main concern is what happens if this country goes to war with someone like China ... how long would it take to get manufacturing facilities up and running to produce everything we needed?
And how long would it take China to replace American customers? A valid question, and a double-edged sword.
But another question is, have we gone too far in gutting consumer protection regulation? Have we weakened government so much that it can no longer protect us from shoddy producers?
