We spend the 4th of July in Staunton visiting with my "children". There is a parade through Gypsy Hill Park, which is more than 100 acres in the middle of Staunton, and a WONDERFUL place for a parade. It all starts at 10 A.M. and ends with a fireworks display at 10 P.M.

Bands play in the Stonewall Jackson Brigade bandstand all day, there are a LOT of food and craft vendors, people have picnics, children run and play and it is one of those places where the locals get to see everyone they know.

For those who want to do it, they can stay there and celebrate Independence Day for 12 hours, but we no longer stay for the evening event.

The Republicans always have a float in the parade, which was started by my Lynn and her husband. In 2000, they decided to decorate their red pickup truck and drive in the parade, so we put Bush signs all along both sides of the truck and had ribbons and flags all over it.

Lynn and Bill sat up front, we sat in lawn chairs up in the back of the truck, and my granddaughter and her friend (both are now 20 years old) sat on the tailgate, with their legs dangling down the back!

All of us wore Bush shirts, hats, etc. and waved our flags. Friends and neighbors of Bill & Lynn waved and hollered to them. The girls waved at all of their friends. Cal & I waved at everybody! We received a tremendous reception --- and, as they say, THE REST IS HISTORY!

Lynn started planning, right then, to have a GOP float the next year, which they have done every year since that time. THEN, the democrats decided to do the same thing.

Lynn also decided to have a GOP float in Staunton's Christmas parade that year, which they did - and do every year. It, too, is a big event - but not like the 4th of July parade.

Lynn & Bill host a cookout at their house about six o'clock in the evening - for their homeschool AND GOP friends. All of them come and bring their families. Last time, there were about 75 people there and Bill says he thinks there will be even more this time.

Lynn & Bill furnish the hot dogs & hamburgers and their friends bring the side dishes, desserts and beverages. It is a wonderful time!
