SWAC Conservative Breakfast ... "Open Mic Saturday"

Kurt Michael, local conservative leader, listened as Alex Davis, Staunton Republican Committee Chairman, talked to a full house about the 4th of July float for the Staunton Independence Day parade to be held in Gypsy Hill Park on Saturday, July 3, 2010, at 10:00 a.m.

Rush Limbaugh has his "Open Mic Fridays" ... SWAC Conservative Round Table Breakfast featured an "Open Mic Saturday" for June, an opportunity to hear from those in the community. Suzanne Curran passed around handouts.

David Karaffa explained the issue of staggered terms for the Augusta County Board of Supervisors and urged everyone to attend the supervisor meeting Wednesday, June 23, at 7:00 pm at the Government Center in Verona.

Chuck Neff, President of VAST, the "rocket boys" who were shut down by Augusta County, gave an update on the latest that is going on with that case. I'll be writing more about that in a future post.

Mike Thomas (center in green shirt), RPV 1st Vice Chairman, was in the area and stopped by to say hello.

SWAC blogger Bob Kirchman added to the discussion.

Suzanne Curran shared information about several issues and passed around petitions. More on that in a later post.

Jim was concerned about the Fairness Doctrine.

May SWAC Conservative Breakfast with Del. Dickie Bell

Kurt Michael led the May SWAC Conservative Breakfast with special guest speaker Del. Dickie Bell and guest Staunton Councilwoman Andrea Oakes.

Dean Welty, Director of the Valley Family Forum, passes out information about the David Barton "Salute to the Family" lunch to be held May 24 from 12-1:30 p.m. at JMU. The dinner for the same night has been sold out. Here he talks with Constitution Party members Steve Bright and Dave Mason.

Andrea Oakes, Staunton City Councilwoman. At later week's City Council meeting she was the lone council member to vote against raising water and sewage fees and personal property taxes.

Del. Bell addresses breakfast. He discussed the 2010 General Assembly and answered questions.

Churchville attorney Francis Chester talks about the real estate assessment issue that has been perculating in Augusta County the past year. Here he asks people if they will sign and collect signatures on a petition asking the Commonwealth Attorney to look into the 2009 assessments.

Kurt Michael, who served as a reserve officer in US Army, stated that he took an oath, like all who serve in the military, that he would support and defend the Constitution of the United States. He reminded the group that it was Armed Forces Day and paid tribute to the men and women who risk their lives to preserve our constitutional freedoms.

Mr. Speedy Hite talks with Del. Dickie Bell. He was recognized and thanked on Armed Forces day for his service in the U.S. Army during World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. He was recognized for his birthday on Thursday when he turned 92 years young.

SWAC Conservative Breakfast ... education, inspiration, action

Kurt Michael led the SWAC Round Table Breakfast on Saturday as newly elected Staunton Republican Committee Chairman Alex Davis (left) listened.

It was another packed room at the April SWAC Conservative Round Table Breakfast Saturday as approximately 55 people from Staunton, Waynesboro, Augusta County, and even Luis Padilla from Harrisonburg, gathered for fellowship and to listen to community leaders. Breakfast began with Staunton GOP Chairman Alex Davis opening in prayer followed by Del. Dickie Bell who led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Local conservative leader Kurt Michael emphasized that the SWAC Conservative Round Table is not a political party or organization but rather a gathering of like-minded people who care more about their country and community than they do about political labels.

Kurt laid out the three goals of SWAC Breakfast which are:
1) Social ... a place for networking with like-minded individuals and groups.
2) Educational ... a place to educate each other on current conservative thought, to keep each other informed of current events and issues.
3) Political Action ... encourage conservative individuals to become politically active.
Tracy Pyles, Supervisor, County of Augusta:
The first speaker was Augusta Board of Supervisor member Tracy Pyles, the only Democrat on the board (and he happens to be my supervisor). His was a lively discussion about the 2009 real estate assessments that were protested by more than 10,000 county residents, and an explanation of the composite index and how its formula is used to decide state funding for schools and other local expenditures. He talked about the flawed assessments and the inequality in deciding the value of properties, adding that something cannot be right when 49% of county lots were assessed at $50,000.

He talked about the need to cut spending, to cut redundancy in services, and the need to look closely at the county budget to find cuts. His comments were peppered with jokes and jabs at himself as he spoke honestly and bluntly about the problem of often being the lone voice on the board against the other six supervisors. He was well received by the crowd ... his remarks were interesting and left folks wanting more information.

Seth Waugh, National Rifle Association:
Seth has accomplished much in his 25 years. As Grassroots Coordinator for the National Rifle Association–Institute for Legislative Action, he coordinates the day-to-day grassroots electoral efforts and legislative outreach activities for NRA-ILA in fourteen states.

In addition, he coordinates and conducts the Association’s legislative and election workshops, and represents the Association in public speaking engagements nationwide. He has been a lobbyist on Capitol Hill, worked for the Ohio House of Representatives, and on various political campaigns. Because I knew his background, his youthfulness took me by surprise but he got started while in his teens. He stressed the NRA "will work with anyone who supports the Second Amendment." That means Democrats, Republicans, independents ... anyone. Emphasizing all the programs they provide, he also talked about the Heller Decision and other issues, and then answered questions and talked with folks afterwards. Our thanks to Jason Bibeau for working with the NRA to bring Seth to address our breakfast.

Conservative leaders from the community:
Del. Dickie Bell, who attended with his wife Anne, thanked Tracy Pyles for his work in the community and thanked voters for their attention to issues. He also put a word of support in for Staunton City Council candidate Carl Tate whom he has endorsed.

Alex Davis, newly elected Chairman of the Staunton Republican Committee, emphasized the positive energy that he has seen from those in the community and said the Staunton Committee has an open door to anyone who wants to work together in the best interest of the country.

Bruce Richmond, director of the Shenandoah Valley Tea Party Patriots, thanked everyone for coming out to the tea party on Thursday in Gypsy Hill Park where reports were 800-1,000 people listened to speakers who stood up for our freedoms.

Charles Kraut, Constitution Party and tea party member, briefly addressed the issue of the country's financial state and his belief the stock market may take a plunge.

Francis Chester thanked everyone for their help over the past 14 months of the real estate tax battle with the Augusta County government.

Chuck Neff of the Rocket Boys case:
We were honored to have Chuck Neff and his wife join us for breakfast. Chuck is President of VAST, the rocketry club that was shut down by Augusta County in the summer of 2009. VAST was denied a special use permit to shoot model rockets on 500 acres in sparsely-populated western Augusta County (something he was told was merely a "formality") and retained attorney Francis Chester to represent them in a lawsuit againt Augusta County. Read about the Rocket Boys here.

Tracy Pyles, the lone Democrat on the Augusta County Board of Supervisors, addressed another packed room about the recent real estate assessments, composite index, state funding, school funding, and much more during his lively remarks peppered with dry-witted jokes that kept the crowd laughing. He is a fiscal conservative when it comes to spending taxpayers' money, something clearly appreciated by voters.

SWAC Conservative Breakfast ... we went to the Lord in prayer

SWAC Conservative Round Table Breakfast ... we went to the Lord in prayer.
Alex Davis prayed for our nation on a day when many from our group were in DC protesting the imminent passage of government health care. We prayed for our nation at a time when we are in crisis, and we prayed for our friends in DC.

After Alex prayed and asked for the Lord's guidance, Trixie Averill led the Pledge of Allegiance as we remembered the freedoms we have enjoyed in this country for over 200 years.

SWAC conservative breakfast

Mike Thomas and Kurt Michael talk at February's SWAC Conservative Breakfast where 55 people turned out. Mike led the Pledge of Allegiance. A number of regulars were in Washington, DC, at the CPAC Conference.

Mr. Speedy Hite (second from left) was recognized for his years of military service during World War II, Korea, and Vietnam.

Suzanne Curran offered information about the Tea Party Nation convention in TN. A firecracker activist, she will be attending the upcoming Suzanne Curran Republican Women's Retreat named after such a hard-working volunteer.

Folks from all walks in life who consider themselves conservatives attend the monthly breakfasts. It is a non-partisan event open to all.

Mr. Hite addressed the group as another military veteran looked on. We are thankful to these men for their sacrifice to protect the freedoms we enjoy.

Another successful SWAC Conservative Breakfast

Local conservative leader Kurt Michael led another successful SWAC Conservative Round Table Breakfast in a room packed with 55 people.

Suzanne Curran demonstrated as she talked about her experience at the Tea Party Nation Convention earlier this month.

The back dining area of Shoney's was packed to capacity Saturday as local conservatives came out to hear Suzanne Curran of Shenandoah County pass along information about her exciting experience at the Tea Party Nation Convention in Nashville earlier this month.

Many familiar faces ... some new faces ... many new to the political process ... these folks were there to hear the issues, express the conservative principles we believe in, and soak in the positive atmosphere as they laughed, cheered, and applauded throughout Suzanne's remarks.

The Shenandoah Conservative "Call to Action" breakfast was held afterwards at 10:00 in Mt. Jackson so Suzanne left Staunton and arrived to address the 35 folks who were there to hear from her and Alan Louderback. I had to miss that one but heard it was another wonderful gathering.
A number of local folks attended CPAC in Washington so we hope to hear from them when they return. More about breakfast and other photos to come....

"In God We Trust" Virginia license plate

Proposed "In God We Trust" Virginia license plate.
Dean Welty of the Valley Family Forum shares the new license plate design that needs 350 people to pre-order before it will be considered by the General Assembly.

Dean Welty passes out "In God We Trust" license plate applications ... Kurt Michael holds the prototype artwork while Mike Shull looks on.

Dean Welty brought the "In God We Trust" license plate design to Saturday's SWAC Conservative Round Table Breakfast where it was excitedly received by the 70+ attendees. There was an urgency in his voice as he impressed that time is of the utmost importance if the plate design is to be approved by this year's General Assembly.

Mr. Welty passed out DMV application forms that need to be filled out and mailed back with a $10 check (special license plate fees are $10 above regular registration fees) as soon as possible.

From Dean Welty:
We have a great opportunity today to have “In God We Trust” license plates on our cars in July, but we must file our applications now in order to gain approval by the General Assembly. Please pass this on to all of your friends and family for their action as well.

How to Apply:
Valley legislators Sen. Mark Obenshain and Del. Dickie Bell are sponsoring the bill in the General Assembly and the vote could come at any time. However, as with any other specialty plate, they need at least 350 pre-filed applications on hand when they make their case to their respective committees.

You can download and complete the application form at www.ingodwetrustvaplate.com, attach a $10 check, and send it to the address shown on the form. No money from the plate will be allocated to any other entities, in contrast so some other specialty plates.

Our National Motto:
“In God We Trust” first appeared on U.S. coins in 1864, where it continues to appear on both coins and paper currency. It became the official motto of the United States in 1956 by an Act of Congress, a decision which has been upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Our National Anthem:
The words appeared much earlier, however, when in 1814 Francis Scott Key included them in the fourth stanza of “The Star Spangled Banner”. That became our national anthem in 1931 and reads, in part, as follows:
“Blest with victory and peace, may the heav'n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: 'In God is our trust.'
Recognition on Other State License Plates and Official Documents:
Starting in 2007, at least five states have offered similar “In God We Trust” license plates: Florida, South and North Carolina, Indiana, and Ohio. Both Georgia and Florida include the motto on their state flags, and Florida adopted it as its official state motto in 2006. If approved, it will become one of more than 200 motifs from which Virginia drivers can choose, ranging from Lighthouses to Parrotheads.

Call to Action:
Please file your applications today to help ensure that we have the 350 required number of pre-filed applications on hand, when needed. Go to www.ingodwetrustvaplate.com
Questions may be directed to Dean Welty at the Valley Family Forum.
