Good Huckabee show this week

Mike Huckabee had a great show on Fox News this weekend, originally showing on Saturday but my family saw the rerun Sunday night. It was a great lineup of guests that we enjoyed hearing from ... John Stossel from ABC's 20/20 ... David Barton from Wallbuilders, the Duggars of the TLC show "18 Children and Counting," and Ray Stevens playing with Mike Huckabee's band and singing a song about 10% being enough for God ... why isn't it enough for the government.

John Stossel has spoken at the past two Americans For Prosperity conferences, spreading his common sense thoughts about government to those attending as well as viewers of his show.

I first heard David Barton speak at the Home Educators Assocation of Virginia (HEAV) convention in Richmond in 2004. I was deep into the George W. Bush reelection campaign and everything Mr. Barton said struck home. We are a country build on Chritian values and those values have been slowing eroding over the years while too many people have sat silently on the sidelines. Wallbuilders offers books, CDs, and more on American history and our Christian heritage.

The Duggars are a home schooling family from Arkansas who now have 18 children ages 7 months to 21 years. We saw their first TV special over five years ago when the father, Jim Bob Duggar, was in the Arkansas legislature ... he and Mike Huckabee are friends because of that ... and the follow-up specials led to a weekly TV show. They have the values of a Christian home school family and remind us of the home schooling families we have know the past 20 years during our home school journey.

Ray Stevens was a hit with the twenty-somethings sitting in the living room watching the show with us. They had heard some of his songs from the past ... "The Streak," "Ahab the Arab," "Everything is Beautiful" and agreed with his song about 10% for God should be enough for the country. Funny song ... but it rang true.

Joe the Plumber on Mike Huckabee's Fox Channel show

I watched Joe the Plumber this morning on "Fox and Friends," and was impressed with how articulate he is when discussing issues and even when the Fox crew threw questions at him about plumbing.

Last night he appeared on the Mike Huckabee show on Fox which is being rerun tonight. The guy is making the rounds and has become a star on Fox News Channel.

Local man says he hopes voters find their own answers

Already in the national spotlight, Samuel "Joe the Plumber" Wurzelbacher last night strode onto the set of Fox News Channel's Huckabee program to thunderous applause.

Host Mike Huckabee, the former Arkansas governor and presidential candidate, began by saying that if John McCain wins, he'll largely have Mr. Wurzelbacher to thank.

The Springfield Township resident, invoked repeatedly as "Joe the Plumber" during Wednesday's presidential debate, demurred.

"Hopefully they'll have me to thank for it as far as telling people to get out and find their own answers," Mr. Wurzelbacher said. "That's where I hope they go with it."

In the days since the debate, it became known Mr. Wurzelbacher is not a licensed plumber, is not buying a business that makes enough to be taxed more under Mr. Obama's tax proposals, and has some tax liens against him.

On Friday, the East Valley/Scottsdale Tribune in Arizona reported that Mr. Wurzelbacher's Arizona driver's license was suspended in May, 2000, following nonpayment of a court-imposed fine for civil traffic violations. He lived in Arizona from 1997-2000.

Mr. Huckabee said that Mr. Wurzelbacher only asked a question when Mr. Obama happened to stop by his current neighborhood a week ago. Mr. Huckabee asked how Mr. Wurzelbacher felt about the scrutiny he'd received.

"It actually upsets me," Mr. Wurzelbacher said. "I am a plumber, and just a plumber, and here Barack Obama or John McCain, I mean these guys are going to deal with some serious issues coming up shortly. The media's worried about whether I paid my taxes, they're worried about any number of silly things that have nothing to do with America. They really don't. I asked a question. When you can't ask a question to your leaders anymore, that gets scary. That bothers me."

Mr. Wurzelbacher confronted Mr. Obama over his tax proposals, asserting that the Democratic nominee's plan would tax him more if Mr. Wurzelbacher bought a plumbing business.

In the course of their conversation, Mr. Obama said, "It's not that I want to punish your success. I just want to make sure that everybody that is behind you, that they have a chance for success, too. I think that when you spread the wealth around, it's good for everybody."

Mr. Wurzelbacher said some friends advised him to lie low and let everything blow over. But then he got calls of support from friends in the military who told him he asked a good question and didn't back down.

That's why he accepted the invitation to appear on Mr. Huckabee's show, he said.

Mike Huckabee to be in Valley on Monday

Governor Mike Huckabee will make an appearance in the Valley tomorrow, February 11, a day before the Virginia state presidential primary. He will arrive at the Shenandoah Regional Airport at 77 Aviation Circle at 4:00 p.m.

"Defending the American Dream:" Mike Huckabee

Mike Huckabee, former Republican governor of Arkansas, was following others in a program that was running late Friday morning at the "Defending the American Dream" summit in DC. Realizing the noon hour was approaching, he joked, "Blessed are the brief for they shall be invited again," to laugher and applause from the crowd.

Conservatives are blessed to have a deep bench of leaders in the cause, and Mike Huckabee does not disappoint. His idea to scrap the tax code and put in place a consumption tax was met with applause. He advocated letting sunshine in on government spending by making financial records accessible to the public. He is also alarmed that so much manufacturing has been outsourced that we are not capable of turning out enough weapons to protect ourselves if necessary.

Good ideas, good conservative ... but, like Brownback, I am not sure he will find enough people to back him to last until the final leg of this race. Time will tell....
