IBD: "A blizzard of lies from Al Gore"

Like a little child caught with his hand in the cookie jar, Al Gore's response to the revelation that global warming advocates fudged the data is to defend it and backpeddle as much as possible. Investor's Business Daily noted:

If hyperbole and chutzpah had a child, it would be the opening paragraph of Gore's op-ed in Sunday's New York Times. Gore surfaced from the global warming witness-protection program to opine that despite admissions of error and evidence of fraud by various agencies, we still face "an unimaginable calamity requiring large-scale, preventive measures to protect human civilization as we know it."

Perhaps he's trying to protect his investments as he knows them, for he is heavily involved in enterprises that deal with carbon offsets and green technology. If the case for climate change is shown to be demonstrably false, a lot of his green evaporates like moisture from the ocean.

For those who never believed the global warming hoax, it is satisfying to watch the fraud unfold and see how Al Gore's responds to some factual "inconvenient truths."

Today he writes that Phil Jones throws in the towel in light of the news that "global warming" has not taken place since 1995.

Absolutely unbelievable.

Tomorrow, NBC (which is owned by General Electric) will begin broadcasting the 2010 Winter Olympics from Vancouver, Canada. Only two events are scheduled for the opening day (alpine skiing and ski jumping), but even those events will be difficult to pull off. Why?

There is no snow in Vancouver. And International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge knows exactly what is to blame: global warming. Rogge tells AFP: "Global warming of course is a worry, it is a worry for the entire world."

Considering that NBC/GE has already received billions in TARP bailout cash from the Obama administration and is actively lobbying for a global warming energy tax bill so that it can receive billions more in government green-energy subsidies on top of the millions it already receives, we are sure to hear lots from NBC announcers about how the lack of snow in Vancouver is just another reason Washington needs to act now to stop global warming.

But back in Washington, the global warming scare-monger crowd is singing a slightly different tune. Facing record snowfalls, Time is reporting: "Snowstorm: East Coast Blizzard Tied to Climate Change." But do not confuse this headline with Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s column from two years ago claiming that global warming was causing "anemic winters" in the Washington region.

No snow, too much snow. It does not matter to the enviroleft crowd. For them, global warming always is to blame. That is the whole reason the movement made a deliberate decision earlier this decade to stop calling it "global warming" and start calling it "climate change." That way they could expand the universe of terrible things they could plausibly blame on global warming.

One British citizen even maintains a comprehensive list of everything the enviroleft has tried to blame on global warming including: Atlantic ocean less salty, Atlantic ocean more salty, Earth slowing down, Earth spinning faster, fish bigger, fish shrinking, and (most importantly) beer better, beer worse.

The media are not the only ones complicit in the climate fear industry. The 2007 Nobel Prize-winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (which is the most prestigious scientific body charged with determining what is and is not settled science) has also been found to be cooking the books.

In just the past year, the IPCC's 2007 report has been exposed for overstating the science on glacier loss in the Himalayas, crop loss in Africa, Amazon rain forest depletion and damage from weather catastrophes.

Here is what we do know: the cap-and-trade system in Europe is completely failing to reduce carbon emissions; the cap-and-trade system proposed here in the United States would do nothing to affect global temperatures, but would do trillions of dollars of damage to the U.S. economy.

Video: 12 inches of global warming....

It's the video that's been seen by over 15,000 people in less than a week ... ABC's Good Morning America and MSNBC wanted RPV Chairman Pat Mullins to do guest appearances (because of the 12+ inches of global warming, he was unable to get to the studios) ... and the video is enjoying national media attention.

The Republican Party of Virginia has employed their new media talents again to produce the video, "12 Inches of Global Warming."

The video, which you can see here, reminds voters in the 5th and 9th Congressional Districts of Tom Perriello and Rick Boucher's vote for the job killing "Cap and Tax" legislation in the context of the major snowstorms that have hit Virginia over the past week. Not only would the bill, which they proudly voted for, throw thousands of Virginians out of work, but it would also cause energy prices to "skyrocket," according to President Obama, one of the bill's biggest fans.

Higher energy costs would make Virginia's economic recovery just that much harder, as manufacturers in places like Danville and Martinsville would have to contend with higher electric and gas bills. Families would also feel a major pocketbook pinch if it were to become law.

They're talking about the video in Time, the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, on CBS News, and on the Glenn Beck Show.

Go ahead ... check it out before you head back outside to shovel more "global warming."

Beck: "Gore MIA during blizzards"

Even with record snows in this winter of 2009-10, the global warming crowd is still at it. From Glenn Beck's Wednesday show:

"Well, the snow is hammering Washington D.C. again. I believe God is just saying, "I got your global warming here, eh? You want a piece of global warming?" Meanwhile we have the apologist over at NBC News saying that this is proof ... that global warming is real."

Even as other networks talk about blizzards being caused by global warming, Glen compares their ratings:

" This is why NBC wonders why, what was it, Monday night I saw the ratings? We beat NBC or MSNBC by 18 times. At 18 times the ratings of MSNBC. And they wonder why. They keep switching up the host now. They are talking about switching up some more hosts. It ain't the host, man. It's your news. Nobody is buying that the cold is caused by the heat. I mean, that's just ridiculous.

Washington under blizzard conditions ... what happened to "global warming"?

Washington has told federal employees to stay home for the third day in a row ... blizzard conditions are now in the nation's capital as another 12-15" of snow are expected on top of the monster snow amounts from the weekend.

Baby, it's cold outside

While the Shenandoah Valley sits in a deep freeze, weather news from other parts of America sound similar ... record snowfalls, record low temps, heaviest snowfall in decades.

Our day time highs have not gone above freezing for several days ... night time lows have been as low as single digits with windchills hovering around zero.

Baby, it's cold outside.

Dr. Neil Frank: "Thoroughly investigate scientific debauchery revealed by 'Climategate' "

Dr. Neil Frank's editorial in Saturday's Houston Chronicle excoriated those who perpetrated the global warming hoax:

Now that Copenhagen is past history, what is the next step in the man-made global warming controversy? Without question, there should be an immediate and thorough investigation of the scientific debauchery revealed by “Climategate.”

If you have not heard, hackers penetrated the computers of the Climate Research Unit, or CRU, of the United Kingdom's University of East Anglia, exposing thousands of e-mails and other documents. CRU is one of the top climate research centers in the world. Many of the exchanges were between top mainstream climate scientists in Britain and the U.S. who are closely associated with the authoritative (albeit controversial) Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Among the more troubling revelations were data adjustments enhancing the perception that man is causing global warming through the release of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other atmospheric greenhouse gases.

Dr. Frank explained what happened to scientists who rejected the global warming theory, reminiscent of Saul Alinaky's rules for radicals that says, "Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it":

Particularly disturbing was the way the core IPCC scientists (the believers) marginalized the skeptics of the theory that man-made global warming is large and potentially catastrophic. The e-mails document that the attack on the skeptics was twofold. First, the believers gained control of the main climate-profession journals. This allowed them to block publication of papers written by the skeptics and prohibit unfriendly peer review of their own papers. Second, the skeptics were demonized through false labeling and false accusations. [emphasis added]

That is what happened to University of Virginia climate scientist Patrick Michaels who was fired by Democrat Gov. Tim Kaine in 2006. From SWAC Girl on July 29, 2007:

While the Left advances their climate change agenda, those who disagree sometimes face dire consequences.

Look what happened to University of Virginia professor Patrick Michaels in August 2006. He had been the State Climatologist since 1980 until he ran up against the liberal agenda of global warming -- he dared to offer evidence debunking its existence -- and was asked by Democrat governor Tim Kaine to stop "misrepresenting" himself as the state's spokesman. Somehow the paperwork had disappeared in Richmond and the governor claimed there was no evidence Dr. Michaels had ever been appointed to such a position.

Dr. Michaels dared to go against the liberal agenda and was silenced by the Left.

Another case of a threatened scientist was noted on SWAC Girl:

In yet another case, a climate change skeptic had his career threatened by a global warming believer. As reported on Fox News on July 27, 2007:

The head of the Environmental Protection Agency says he will investigate a threatening letter sent to a global warming skeptic by the head of a group advocating the use of renewable energy.

The Washington Times reports American Council on Renewable Energy President Michael Eckhart wrote to Competitive Enterprise Institute Senior Fellow Marlo Lewis, "It is my intention to destroy your career as a liar. If you produce one more editorial against climate change, I will launch a campaign against your professional integrity."

Marlo Lewis dared to go against the liberal agenda and was threatened by the Left.

Dr. Frank is one of a growing number of climatologists who are publicly speaking out, questioning, and searching for answers in light of the Climategate controversy:

Last year 60 German scientists sent a letter to Chancellor Angela Merkel urging her to “strongly reconsider” her position supporting man-made global warming. Sixty scientists in Canada took similar action. Recently, when the American Physical Society published its support for man-made global warming, 200 of its members objected and demanded that the membership be polled to determine the APS' true position.

The silence from the mainstream media is deafening.

Neil Frank, who holds a Ph.D. from Florida State University in meteorology, was director of the National Hurricane Center (1974–87) and chief meteorologist at KHOU (Channel 11) until his retirement in 2008.

Sweden's environment minister: "Copenhagen a disaster"

Looks as if the alliance is breaking apart just as surely as their false climate data. How long can a lie keep going without people finding out the truth? Jody at the Contemporary Conservative reports from the Financial Times:

There was even harsher criticism from Andreas Carlgren, environment minister of Sweden, current holder of the rotating European Union presidency, who proclaimed the Copenhagen accord “a disaster” and “a great failure”.

Tell ESPN to knock off global warming propaganda

From Our Country Deserves Better PAC....

Today ESPN broadcast the "Green Game" a college basketball game featuring two of the best men's college basketball teams: Kansas and University of Michigan.

Friends, the broadcast was shameful. Throughout the entire game the announcers, ESPN crew and college officials were focused on trying to shove down the viewers throats the hoax of climate change, featuring propaganda footage and biased commentary from the sports announcers declaring the need for Americans to reduce carbon emissions or risk devastation to the environment.

The broadcast took place the week that the Copenhagen Climate Summit is taking place - yet another propaganda-driven effort to impose socialistic government regulations and government-control on the economy (and on the actions of individuals) and using the hysteria of climate devastation as the means to advance their propaganda.

We call on ESPN to issue an apology for neglecting their responsibilities as a sports broadcaster and instead entering the territory of advancing propaganda on supposed climate change and to never again broadcast a "Green Game" or any other similar propaganda.

We need to speak out and have the voice of consumers who don't buy into this junk science to be heard. We have obtained the email addresses of 3 of ESPN's highest ranking executives. We need you to contact them ASAP and register your protest for their shameful climate-change propaganda:

Oh, what a tangled web.

As the Climategate scandal continues to unfold, serious questions have arisen as to whether it will ever be possible to confirm how broadly the University of East Anglia's Climatic Research Unit (CRU) manipulated data upon which the "man-made" global warming "consensus" is based.

According to Times Online, reporting on November 29th, "Scientists at the University of East Anglia (UEA) have admitted throwing away much of the raw temperature data on which their predictions of global warming are based… The data were gathered from weather stations around the world and then adjusted to take account of variables in the way they were collected. The revised figures were kept, but the originals — stored on paper and magnetic tape — were dumped to save space when the CRU moved to a new building."

That's shocking, to say the least. However, there was no mention of this in the University of East Anglia's press release of November 28th responding to the scandal. "It is well known within the scientific community and particularly those who are skeptical of climate change that over 95% of the raw station data has been accessible through the Global Historical Climatology Network for several years," said the UEA's Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Research Enterprise and Engagement Professor Trevor Davie.

So, was the data dumped, or not?

The release continues, "The University will make all the data accessible as soon as they are released from a range of non-publication agreements. Publication will be carried out in collaboration with the Met Office Hadley Centre. The procedure for releasing these data, which are mainly owned by National Meteorological Services (NMSs) around the globe, is by direct contact between the permanent representatives of NMSs (in the UK the Met Office)."

And, said Trevies in an earlier statement, "No record has been deleted, altered, or otherwise dealt with in any fashion with the intent of preventing the disclosure of all, or any part, of the requested information. Where information has not been disclosed, we have done so in accordance with the provisions of the relevant legislation and have so informed the requester."

Really.

A problem then emerges with the CRU's story. In particular, the story of Roger Pielke, Jr., who as professor of environmental studies at the University of Colorado had requested the raw data used by the CRU to bolster the UN International Panel on Climate Change's "man-made" global warming consensus.

He was told that the CRU did not have it. Period.

According to the National Review's Patrick J. Michaels, after Pielke made his request, CRU Director Phil Jones responded, "Since the 1980s, we have merged the data we have received into existing series or begun new ones, so it is impossible to say if all stations within a particular country or if all of an individual record should be freely available. Data storage availability in the 1980s meant that we were not able to keep the multiple sources for some sites, only the station series after adjustment for homogeneity issues. We, therefore, do not hold the original raw data but only the value-added (i.e., quality controlled and homogenized) data."

While the account of Pielke confirms the Times Online's story, Jones' previous response to Pielke directly contradicts the UEA's official story, namely that 95 percent of the data has been "accessible" for years, and that the UEA will now make all of the data available as soon as they are released from a number of non-publication agreements.

So, there is a big problem. Specifically, how can the UEA now be in a position to release the data if much of it was dumped it some 20 years ago? The answer is: it isn't. Not yet.

According to Pielke's blog of November 29th, "Today I received an email from a climate scientist of CRU-email fame complaining about my quote in the Times. He says that the national meteorological services have the original data, suggesting that I was misrepresenting the situation." This would confirm the CRU's release of November 28th, but it raises an even more important question. If the CRU never had the originals, had global climate researchers outside of the CRU and the IPCC ever had access? Had anyone besides the stations?

Pielke replied, "If… an economic research unit were releasing analyses of global economic activity in support of policy claimed to not hold the original country data — instead saying, well the countries have it — that would be highly problematic." Because it would mean that the CRU never had the original data to begin with, but copies.

It gets worse. Scientists, academics, and others who, like Pielke, requested the very same information were told entirely different stories by the CRU prior to the scandal breaking, according to the Times Online:

When David Holland, an engineer from Northampton, requested the data, he was told it was "not in the public interest".

Steve McIntyre, owner of the Climate Audit website, was turned down because he was not an "academic."

Ross McKitrick, professor of economics at the University of Guelph in Canada, said he was told "they had obtained the data under confidentiality agreements and so could not supply them. This was odd because they had already supplied some of them to other academics, but only those who support the idea of climate change."

So, to summarize: 1) the CRU did not retain the data that was sent to it by the National Meteorological Services (NMS); 2) data was suppressed because the CRU arbitrarily deemed it not to be in the "public interest"; and 3) the UEA will not release the data without each station's express permission (which it has routinely denied to non-Hot Earthers).

Assuming that to be the size and shape of the scandal currently, there is a lot of fallout.

Clearly, if the CRU was suppressing data release under Jones' watch, then the CRU may have violated UK Freedom of Information law. And, if the original data is not released in full by the NMS, then it will continue to be impossible to prove what global temperatures even were for a number of years, let alone that increases could be attributed to man.

But, most importantly, if the data was "massaged" and adjusted to show an increase in global temperatures where there was none, then the CRU defrauded the entire world.
And, that looks like exactly what happened.

The American Thinker's Marc Sheppard has confirmed that the CRU did indeed use sophisticated statistical software coding to manipulate their dataset:

"[T]here are hundreds of IDL and FORTRAN source files buried in dozens of subordinate sub-folders… [Many] fall into the precarious range between highly questionable (removing MXD [maximum latewood density, the growth parameter commonly utilized by CRU scientists as a temperature proxy] data which demonstrate poor correlations with local temperature) to downright fraudulent (replacing MXD data entirely with measured data to reverse a disorderly trend-line)…"

Some programmers even attached warning notes about the data to the plotting programs. One reads:

"The data after 1960 should not be used. The tree-ring density records tend to show a decline after 1960 relative to the summer temperature in many high-latitude locations. In this data set this "decline" has been artificially removed in an ad-hoc way, and this means that data after 1960 no longer represent tree-ring density variations, but have been modified to look more like the observed temperatures."

But, believe it or not, it gets even worse.

After the CRU scandal broke, the Competitive Enterprise Institute's Senior Fellow Chris Horner announced that he had served "three Notices of Intent to File Suit against NASA and its Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS), for those bodies' refusal - for nearly three years - to provide documents requested under the Freedom of Information Act."

This is significant because, like the CRU, NASA's GISS is the world's other preeminent proponent of the "man-made" global warming consensus. And apparently, they are stonewalling the release of critical information, too.

According to Horner, the unfulfilled Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request is intended to uncover, amongst other information, "internal discussions about NASA's quiet correction of its false historical U.S. temperature records after two Canadian researchers discovered a key statistical error… [and] internal discussions relating to the emails sent to James Hansen and/or Reto A. Ruedy from Canadian statistician Steve McIntyre calling their attention to the errors in NASA/GISS online temperature data…"

And, making matters yet worse, according to Viscount Christopher Monckton, writing an exclusive to Pajamas Media, that data has been manipulated, too:

"Unfortunately, the British researchers have been acting closely in league with their U.S. counterparts who compile the other terrestrial temperature dataset — the GISS/NCDC [National Climatic Data Center] dataset. That dataset too contains numerous biases intended artificially to inflate the natural warming of the 20th century."

All of which means, of course, that Congress is duty-bound to the American people to get to the bottom of this growing scandal and to abolish any and all laws and regulations that depend upon this now-suspect research.

Certainly, that would be the proper course of action. Instead, after weeks of the White House stating that he would not do so, Barack Obama is preparing to travel to Copenhagen, Denmark to negotiate a draconian treaty drastically reducing carbon emissions in the industrialized world. And Congress is moving to pass its own carbon caps in the Senate.

But, Obama and his Congressional counterparts should be careful, lest they get caught in the tangled web of lies, manipulations, and distortions of Climategate, and go down with the ship once public outrage over the scandal reaches critical mass, as surely it will.
