Trixie Averill stood with Support the Troops ralliers at the 2007 Cindy Sheehan appearance in Charlottesville. Her sign says, "3-Tour Military Mom." Her son, Sgt. Marcus Averill, was deployed to Iraq three times during Operation Iraqi Freedom. She stood solidly and defiantly in support of her son and all military men and women who defend our country.
Trixie Averill. Ben Marchi.
Those two people have been around as long as I've been involved in politics as our lives intertwined throughout the years on campaigns and conservative causes.
When Ben took over as Virginia director of Americans for Prosperity three years ago, he was already a seasoned campaigner despite his youth. He raised the awareness of AFP to a point where it became a household word, fighting against unnecessary taxes and wasteful spending.
Trixie had planned to step back and take it easy after the gubernatorial campaign that saw Bob McDonnell voted in by a landslide as governor of Virginia in November 2009. However, life had other plans and she was drafted to run last year as chairman of the 6th Congressional District after the announced retirement of Fred Anderson. After winning that position at the May 2010 convention, she moved forward, leading the 6th District ... until yesterday.
That's when it was announced that Trixie had been tapped to lead the AFP after Ben stepped aside to run his own business and follow other pursuits. Trixie announced her decision at Saturday's 6th District meeting in Lexington.
While we hate to see Trixie leave the Republican Party of Virginia, she will be great at AFP because she will be doing what she loves ... advancing a cause she believes in. Congratulations to Trixie in her new job, and congratulations to Ben as he and his wife Jenna step into the next chapter in their lives.
