NY Times Jill Abramson: 'This is the most secretive White House I've ever dealt with'

Jill Abramson, executive editor of the New York Times, noted in an interview that the Obama White House was the most secretive she had ever dealt with:
"I would say it is the most secretive White House that I have ever been involved in covering, and that includes — I spent 22 years of my career in Washington and covered presidents from President Reagan on up through now, and I was Washington bureau chief of the Times during George W. Bush's first term," Abramson told Al Jazeera America in an interview that will air on Sunday.

"I dealt directly with the Bush White House when they had concerns that stories we were about to run put the national security under threat. But, you know, they were not pursuing criminal leak investigations," she continued. "The Obama administration has had seven criminal leak investigations. That is more than twice the number of any previous administration in our history. It's on a scale never seen before. This is the most secretive White House that, at least as a journalist, I have ever dealt with."
The comments were made to Al Jazeera America in an interview that will air Sunday.

Politico noted:
James Risen, a Times reporter, is currently fighting to avoid having to testify against a former CIA official accused of being his source. According to Robert Gates's new memoir, Obama hadn't been in office more than a month before saying he wanted a criminal investigation into disclosures on Iran policy that had been published the Times.

In the wake of the revelations about the Justice Department's monitoring of Fox News reporter James Rosen, whom the DOJ labeled a “co-conspirator," the Times editorial board wrote that "the Obama administration has moved beyond protecting government secrets to threatening fundamental freedoms of the press to gather news."
The far-reaching interview touched on the Iraq War, the Snowden debacle, and the future of print newspapers as well as secrecy of the Obama White House.

Saturday in Chesterfield: Susan Allen and 'The Remarkable Ronald Reagan'

Ronald Reagan was a remarkable man, and one person who would know that is Virginia's former First Lady Susan Allen whose husband George began his political career leading the Young Republicans for Reagan in 1976. Now Mrs. Allen has lovingly written about this man admired by many.

The Remarkable Ronald Reagan: Cowboy and Commander-in-Chief is a children's book but I am eager to read it for two reasons: 1) it's about Ronald Reagan; 2) its author is Susan Allen. They are both people I greatly admire.

Mrs. Allen and her book will be at the Chesterfield Town Center's Barnes & Noble bookstore this Saturday, July 13, 2013, at 1:00 p.m. For those in the Richmond area, it's a wonderful opportunity to visit with Susan for story time and to have her sign your copy of the book.

The Barnes & Noble website offered an overview of the book:
Ronald Reagan was a natural leader, well-remembered not just for his political leadership, but also for his warmth, kindness, dignity, and optimism. There’s a lot kids can learn from Reagan, about our country and about being good leaders and good people.

The Remarkable Ronald Reagan: Cowboy and Commander in Chief is a fun, colorful look at his life, from his humble beginnings as the son of a shoe salesman, to his years as a Hollywood actor, his service in WWII, his life as a rancher, and finally the culmination of his political career in the Oval Office. Ronald Reagan is an ideal role model, not only as a leader and former president, but also as a shining example of self-sacrifice and determination. The Remarkable Ronald Reagan is a treat for the entire family.
TLC Book Tours offered more in its assessment of the book:
The Remarkable Ronald Reagan is a wonderful new children's book about our great president and his big dreams in life and his great accomplishments as our Nation's leader....Written for elementary students, adults will also enjoy the walk down memory lane with Reagan -- and everyone will learn something new about this remarkable man! Look forward to seeing you there!
If you miss the Chesterfield stop on Mrs. Allen's book tour, she will be at the Charlottesville Barracks Road Shopping Center Barnes & Noble on Saturday, July 20, 2013, at 11:00 a.m.

Mrs. Allen talked with the folks at the DC Fox News affiliate in an interview about her book. Also, be sure to check out her Facebook page for photos of various locations along the tour and updates about upcoming dates.

About Susan Allen
Susan Allen served as First Lady of Virginia when her husband, George Allen, was elected as the Commonwealth’s 67thGovernor. In that role, she worked on many initiatives including tourism, breast cancer awareness, and children’s issues.

Accompanying her father-in-law, famed NFL head coach and Chairman of The President’s Council on Physical Fitness, Susan met Ronald Reagan in 1987 in the Oval Office. Reagan was an Allen family friend and the one who inspired her husband to run for office. George led Young Virginians for Reagan in 1976 and currently serves on the Board for Governors for the Reagan Ranch.

Susan Allen resides in Mt. Vernon, VA, with her husband and is an avid fan of reading, history, and the outdoors. The Allens have two daughters, Tyler and Brooke, and one son, Forrest.

[And an unofficial added note from me: Susan Allen is an all-around classy lady.]

Arizona wildfire tragedy claims 19 firefighters

In what may be the largest loss in Hotshot history, tragedy struck Sunday night as officials confirmed that 19 Prescott Granite Mountain Hotshot firefighters were killed while battling the Yarnell Hill wildfire that has consumed over 1,000 acres.

The news brings to light the heartbreaking reality of fighting dangerous western wildfires.

The local Fox affiliate reported more about the fire:
The wildfire was likely caused by a lightning strike Saturday night.

The Yarnell Hill fire, about 35 miles southwest of Prescott, has burned about 1,300 acres and forced the evacuation of 50 homes.

The fire started Friday and has not yet burned down any structures, but Sunday night firefighters pushed the blaze back away from communities, hoping to keep the blaze from overtaking any homes.
Reports are that a flashover killed all 19 even though they deployed their fire shelters.

It is reminiscent of the July 2, 1994, wildfire on Storm King Mountain near Glenwood Springs, Colorado, also known as the South Canyon fire, when 14 Hotshots were killed. It, too, was started by a lightning strike. Firefighters were trapped when winds shifted in the extremely rugged terrain.

More details about the breaking Arizona fire from USA Today. Prayers for the families and friends of those who were lost.

Liberty University offers scholarship to Eagle Scout under fire

What is particularly surprising about this story is that it took place in North Carolina. Fox News reported:
A North Carolina Eagle Scout who was arrested and faces expulsion for accidentally leaving a shotgun in his pickup truck in the school parking lot has been offered a scholarship to attend Liberty University.
Political correctness run amuk?
Cole Withrow was just a few weeks from graduating with honors from Princeton High School when he was arrested on Monday and slapped with a felony weapons charge. Withrow had been skeet shooting with friends a day before and had only noticed he had left his shotgun in his truck as he reached to grab his book bag.

When he realized his mistake, he went to the front office and called his mother. An administrator overheard the conversation and called police.
The story went national ... so how did Lynchburg's Liberty University come into this?

Withrow was wearing a Liberty University tee shirt in the news story. Who should see it but Jerry Falwell Jr. himself, chancellor and president of Liberty University, who was in North Carolina and saw the story on the news ... complete with LU shirt. The rest, as they say, is history:
Falwell told Fox News that he made a few calls and discovered that Withrow’s sister is a Liberty graduate.

“I was really impressed with what a meek and humble Christian kid he is,” Falwell said. “I thought he would be a perfect fit at Liberty.”

So the chancellor made the 18-year-old an offer he couldn’t refuse.

“I told him that we would give him whatever scholarships he needed to attend Liberty University,” he said.

Falwell said the university is willing to do whatever it takes to make sure the teenager gets a college education.

“The anti-gun zealots seem to be vilifying him for making an honest mistake,” he told Fox News. “We want to reward him for trying to do the right thing.”

And that means even helping the young man finish his last few weeks of high school. Falwell said they offered to let him finish his high school work through their online academy.
Liberty's 100,000 on-campus and on-line students make it the largest Christian University in the world.

Donald Trump: Obama likes to vacation

Presidents have always been targets for the opposing party when on vacation ... but Barack Obama may have gone over the top, in the eyes of billionaire Donald Trump.

A man who has a work ethic that won't quit, Trump notes to Fox News Channel's Greta Van Sustern:
"... it sends a bad message. Here we have a country that really is going to hell in a handbasket. Let's not kid ourselves. What's happening to this country is horrible. All over the world, they're talking about it. And we have a president that's constantly -- whether it's Martha's Vineyard or someplace else, constantly on vacation. I mean, all the time he's on vacation! So I think it sends a very, very bad message. We have to work in this country to bring it back.
The president is heading to Martha's Vineyard for 10 days of vacation.

Liberal meme falsely claims Jon Stewart beat Fox News ratings in May

A false meme began showing up this evening on Facebook claiming that the Jon Stewart show beat all of Fox News shows combined during the month of May. Something sounded fishy to me ... so I went to the internet and began searching.

Guess what? It's not true.

Vet from Moran town hall appears on Fox & Friends

Thursday night Virginia Democratic Rep. Jim Moran (8th Congressional District) was conducting  a town hall meeting when he was asked a question by a disabled military veteran. Moran's disrespect and rudeness in responding to the vet were captured on videotape and spread by Rush Limbaugh, Hot Air, Weekly Standard, and Fox News.

This morning the military vet was a guest on Fox & Friends as he talked with anchor Steve Doocy about the incident. Wayne Tunick, a 27-year U.S. Navy veteran, attended the town hall to ask why Congress was on the verge of a shutdown that would stop paychecks to military men and women including active troops in Afghanistan and Iraq. He also questioned why Moran was conducting a town hall instead of being in DC working on a resolution to the budget crisis.

When Moran commented that Tunick was making "caustic" remarks,  Tunick took exception and told the Congressman so. That resulted in Moran telling the veteran to be quiet and sit down.

Another town hall attendee taped the entire episode and it quickly went viral on Friday. I wrote about it at the Washington Examiner as well as others who called attention to the exchange.

Moran's office responded to the incident by saying there were people waiting in line waiting and they couldn't disrupt those wanting to ask questions. When asked by Doocy about that, Tunick said there were not a number of people in line behind him ... there was one person.

His motivation, he said, was the ultimate leadership lesson he learned from the military: number one is you always take care of your troops. The troops, he told Doocy, did not need to worry about a government shutdown cutting off their paychecks with their spouses wondering whether they would be able to pay the bills.

With a late-night deal struck with Congress at the eleventh hour Friday, there will be no government shutdown.

$1 million contribution from Murdoch to Republican Governors Association

A $1 million contribution. That's what News Corp's owner Rupert Murdoch gave to the Republican Governors Association (RGA), according to Ben Smith at Politico. News Corp owns Fox News and the New York Post.

RGA responded:
News Corp. Spokesman Jack Horner emails, "News Corporation believes in the power of free markets, and the RGA’s pro-business agenda supports our priorities at this most critical time for our economy."
That's what you call putting a lot of eggs in one basket. I believe November is coming....

Greta Van Sustern and Maureen McDonnell

Maureen McDonnell is a gracious First Lady of Virginia, and now Greta Van Sustern knows it, too, as she wrote on her GretaWire blog:
We went in to the first floor of the Governor's Mansion where there are often historic tours and the Governor's wife came down to meet us. You would love her! She is extremely gracious and friendly. She is getting the Mansion ready for it's 200th anniversary.
Greata and Fox News had slipped into Richmond Monday to interview Ken Cuccinelli because of the judge's slap-down of the federal government's request to dismiss the Commonwealth's challenge to the federal health care bill.

Obama obsessed with Fox News

Barack Obama is obsessed with Fox News. Never before has a president bashed a network and radio personalities like Obama has, going after Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity by name.

Through The Fox Nation we find the transcript of Obama's interview on Tuesday in which he bashed Fox News:
When you and I spoke in January, you said, I observed that you haven’t gotten much bad press,” Harwood said. “You said, ‘It’s coming.’ Media critics would say not only has it not come, but that you’ve gotten such favorable press either because of bias or because you’re good box office that it’s hurting the country because you’re not sufficiently being held accountable for your policies. Assess that.”

Obama dismissed that assertion and claimed one station was devoted to “attacking” the Obama administration:

“It’s very hard for me to swallow that one,” Obama said. “First of all, I’ve got one television station that is entirely devoted to attacking my administration,” he added, chuckling.

“I assume you’re talking about Fox,” Harwood replied.

“Well, that’s a pretty big megaphone and you’d be hard-pressed if you watched the entire day to find a positive story about me on that front,” Obama said.
Check out the video.

This president has complained about the previous administration, conservative talk show hosts, Fox News ... quit yer whining!

A leader does not pass the buck ... a leader does not whine ... a leader does not blame everyone around him ... a leader accepts the responsibility.

Obama is an idol in the eyes of the mainstream media. They have given him a pass resulting in the perception that they work hand-in-hand with him, i.e., the upcoming ABC special pushing universal health care to be broadcast from the White House on June 24.

In the midst of all the adolation, one network doesn't have stars in its eyes ... and that is Fox News. They are performing fair and balanced coverage ... they are doing their journalistic jobs.
