2013 voters won't let go of Bolling

There it was again in Saturday's Richmond Times-Dispatch ... another letter to the editor urging voters to write in Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling for Governor. At a time when you would expect the write-in talk to die down, it isn't. Tonight yet another person told me they were writing in the LG. It's something I hear on a regular basis.

On August 29, a letter writer to the RTD wrote:
Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli has no one to blame for his lackluster polling numbers but himself. When he became greedy and unceremoniously pushed Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling out the front door, he immediately lost the moderate support.

If Cuccinelli had run again for attorney general or lieutenant governor supporting Bolling (with his moderate force) for governor, polling data would probably be very different. If the current trend continues, it is likely that Virginia will have a second-rate governor with little or no elective or governing experience.

Joseph Childress. Palmyra.
Saturday's letter writer responded:
I agree 100 percent with letter-writer Joseph Childress (“Cuccinelli has only himself to blame”). Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli did push Bill Bolling out the front door, as Childress wrote.

I know Bolling is not seeking a write-in, but I shall write his name in on Election Day, and I hope whoever reads this will agree and do the same.

Bolling is a fine politician, a Virginia gentleman and a true friend.

Grace T. Seat. South Boston.
There's a quiet defiance rolling through Virginia. Will it grow as Election Day approaches?

Gov. Jim Gilmore at RPV Victory Dinner

Gov. Jim Gilmore addressed the crowd.

Bob and Maureen McDonnell (left) listen to remarks from Jim Gilmore.

Jim and Roxanne Gilmore talk with fellow Republicans after dinner. I have a story to share about the Governor in a later post.

When Susan Allen, wife of former Sen. George Allen, introduced former Gov. Jim Gilmore, the crowd was on its feet applauding this straight-talking public servant who has accomplished much in his life.

A native of nearby Henrico County, he stood before his Party in the Richmond Marriott, delivering remarks that hit on many subjects that brought applause from the crowd. The Federal debt, he said, cannot be sustained and they most assuredly will raise taxes because of it. Drill off-shore. Health care should not be government-run. The looming deficit will lead to higher taxes. Cap 'n trade will hurt business. He mentioned his Patriotic Committee PAC, and said he is there to help elect Republicans so call on him wherever needed. As he concluded his remarks, he received a standing ovation from fellow Republicans grateful for his service to the Commonwealth.
I have a story to share about the Governor in another post.

20th HoD candidate ...

... is Dickie Bell, Staunton City Councilman. He will be the Republican nominee to replace Chris Saxman on the ticket to run against Democrat Erik Curren. If Bell wins, it will leave an opening on City Council that will probably be filled by the majority Democrat members with another Democrat.

Blogging setup at Homestead debate

We're front row at one of the media tables set up this year to accommodate those covering the event. Rahul Bali, a reporter with WTOP radio out of Washington, DC, is beside me and Brian Bridgeforth from Waynesboro is on the other side as we sit at the front table left of the stage.

For the first time since I have been attending these debates, tables have been set up beside the stage ... three on the left and three on the right ... to accommodate the media and bloggers. The Virginia Bar Association was very accommodating to those of us in the new media covering the event.

Next to me Rahul is sending a first report into the radio station on "Round 1: Creigh Deeds vs Bob McDonnell." Tyler Whitley with the Richmond Times Dispatch is across the room along with Bernie Niemeier from Virginia Business ... Bob Stuart with the Waynesboro News Virginian is here as he is each year for this event.

Both candidates have been in the room to do sound checks and scope out the room. Bob McDonnell walked through the media area and said hello, shaking hands with those covering the event. Creigh Deeds smiled as he walked by but did not stop.

With less than an hour to go, most of the media are in place, sound checks are going on, and no one from the public is in the room yet. It's the quiet before the storm, so to speak....

I am blogging the debate at The Homestead

Beautiful Homestead resort in western Virginia.

Virginia's two gubernatorial candidates will meet eye-to-eye today as they square off for Virginia's first debate between Bob McDonnell (R) and Creigh Deeds (D). Mr. Deeds will be in his backyard since he is from Bath County, home of the beautiful and historic Homestead Resort.

Sponsored by the Virginia Bar Association, this annual summer event in the mountains of western Virginia is a must-do for political junkies and offers an opportunity for Virginia's lawyers and the public to sit in as the issues are debated.

This year Virginia political bloggers will cover the event live along with mainstream media representatives. For those unable to be on the premises, a live feed will be available at VirginiaTalks.com.

This is the first meet-up between Mr. McDonnell and Mr. Deeds since the June Democratic primary. While Mr. McDonnell has proposed a series of 10 debates between now and election day, Mr. Deeds has agreed to only four.

Bloggers United had invited both candidates to attend at its annual event, debating one another in the presence of political bloggers from across the Commonwealth. Mr. McDonnell agreed; Mr. Deeds declined.

Since Mr. Deeds appears to be a reluctant debater, there may not be many opportunities to observe him discussing issues with Mr. McDonnell so this weekend is especially important.

Let the debate begin!

Political eyes will turn toward western Virginia this weekend as the gubernatorial candidates meet for the annual Virginia Bar Association debate at the Homestead in Hot Springs.

Bob McDonnell (R) and Creigh Deeds (D) will continue in the summer tradition of prominent candidates debating the issues before an audience of Virginia lawyers and the public. The event is always entertaining and the setting encourages political junkies to make room on their calendars to attend.

Entire GOP ticket leading in latest poll

From Republican Party of Virginia's Chairman Pat Mullins....

Republican Party of Virginia Chairman Pat Mullins today noted the results of a new poll released by the firm Public Policy Polling, which shows each of the three Republican statewide candidates with a clear lead following the Democratic primary election. Candidate for governor Bob McDonnell leads Creigh Deeds by a 49-to-43 margin; Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling leads Jody Wagner by 46-to-40; and Sen. Ken Cuccinelli bests Steve Shannon 45-to-38 in the race for attorney general.

“Several polls conducted immediately after the primary had shown Deeds moving into the lead but it appears his bounce has worn off,” reported PPP in a press release from Dean Debnam, president of the firm.

Additional good news for McDonnell in the poll is his 21-point lead among self-described independents: 54-to-33.

“It’s pretty clear that any boost the Democrats may have gotten from the publicity surrounding their primary election has disappeared,” RPV Chairman Mullins said. “It’s also obvious that the more Virginians tune into the race, the more they like our impressive slate of candidates.”

The poll was conducted between June 30th and July 2nd and contacted 617 likely voters. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

“It’s clear that voters are hungry for candidates who have innovative ideas for how to bring jobs to Virginia and inject some energy into the economy,” Mullins said. “Our Republican candidates best represent those ideas.”

Details of the poll can be found here.

“While this is good news, we are aware that this campaign is a marathon and not a sprint,” Mullins said. “We intend to run hard and strong and continue to spread our optimistic message of jobs and economic opportunity for all Virginians.”

Poll: McDonnell +6, Bolling +6, Cuccinelli +7

Good news for the GOP....

McDonnell leads for Governor

Public Policy Polling's first post primary look at the race for Governor of Virginia finds Republican Bob McDonnell holding a 49-43 lead over Democrat Creigh Deeds.
Several polls conducted immediately after the primary had shown Deeds moving into the lead but it appears his bounce has worn off.

Both candidates are pretty popular. McDonnell is viewed favorably by 51% of the electorate, with 32% holding an unfavorable opinion. For Deeds it's a 48/29 spread. McDonnell's lead is due largely to a 54/33 advantage among independents.

There is some good news for Deeds in the results. He currently leads just 68-16 among African Americans but Democrats often under poll in that demographic this far out from an election and end up doing better at the ballot box. Also, there are more undecided Democrats than Republicans, giving him room to grow.

"The race for Governor right now is in a very similar place to 2005," said Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling. "The Republican Attorney General has a modest lead four months out from election day. The question now is whether McDonnell can sustain it, unlike Jerry Kilgore, or whether Deeds will come from behind to win as Tim Kaine did."

Republicans hold similar leads in the races for Lieutenant Governor and Attorney General. Incumbent Bill Bolling is up 46-40 on Jody Wagner in the former race and Ken Cuccinelli has a 45-38 lead over Steve Shannon in the latter.

PPP surveyed 617 likely general election voters from June 30th to July 2nd. The survey's margin of error is +/-4.0%. Other factors, such as refusal to be interviewed and weighting, may introduce additional error that is more difficult to quantify.

Complete results can be found at www.publicpolicypolling.com.

The Dems try again ... Saxman to have opposition

Rumors had been afloat for a while that the Democrats were looking for someone to run against the central Shenandoah Valley's popular 20th House District Delegate Chris Saxman.

Today's Waynesboro News Virginian announcement confirmed that the marketing director for Staunton's Shakespeare Theatre, Erick Curren, 43, wants to challenge Del. Saxman by running on a platform of "clean energy and efficiency to promote economic development."

Interestingly enough, Del. Saxman carried a bill for Mr. Curren during the 2009 General Assembly session. HB 2535 grants statewide authority for creation of arts and cultural or education districts by localities for the purpose of increasing awareness and support for the arts and culture or education in the locality. Localities may provide incentives for the support and creation of arts and cultural or education venues in the district. Currently, the statute applies only to certain listed localities and does not include education.

Del. Saxman helped shepherd the Senate version through the House to help the arts and cultural community in Staunton.

Never one to run from a fight, Del. Saxman is ready for the opportunity to debate his opponent and highlight his achievements while sharing his vision for the future:

Saxman looks forward to debating the issues with Curren. The Republican incumbent said the economy is number one.

“I’m not going to place any type of job over another,” he said. “There are so many people out of work.”

Saxman said he has worked to protect the environment by supporting the upgrade of Virginia’s waste water treatment facilities and air quality.

“I’ve done a very good job for the 20th District and I hope the citizens of the 20th District will send me back to Richmond on their behalf,” he said.
In 2007 Chris Saxman won reelection over Democrat challenger Bruce Elder with 68.5% of the vote.

The 20th House District includes the city of Staunton, Highland County and parts of Augusta and Rockingham counties.

Saxman will not be challenged by Pyles

It was confirmed Friday night that Del. Chris Saxman (R-20th House District) will not be challenged for his House seat by Augusta County Supervisor Tracy Pyles.

Mr. Pyles, who first questioned the high real estate assessments in Augusta County and is riding a wave of popularity with residents for championing the little guy, had been rumored to be looking for a rematch against Del. Saxman. The two ran against each other in 2001 when the 20th House seat was formed after redistricting.

McDonnell-Bolling stand up for workers' right-to-work

Both Refuse to Participate in SEIU Questionnaire Which Asks Candidates to Support Overturning Virginia's Right to Work Law ... SEIU Strongly Supports Card Check; Questionnaire Due Today

Bob McDonnell, Republican gubernatorial candidate and former Attorney General of Virginia, and Bill Bolling, Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, announced today that neither will respond to a candidate questionnaire sent out by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). The two cited the group's longstanding hostility to Virginia's Right to Work law and its advocacy for federal Card Check legislation. The questionnaire was sent to statewide candidates in Virginia. It is due today.

Questions to be answered by candidates responding to the SEIU questionnaire include:

"Virginia's so-called 'Right to Work' law does not guarantee any rights. In fact, by weakening unions and collective bargaining, 'Right to Work"'lowers wages for all Virginians, endangers safety and health standards that protect workers, destroys job security, and prevents Virginia's working families from earning health insurance benefits. Do you support a path to overturn the so-called 'Right to Work' laws?"

AND

"If elected, will you publicly support workers who are forming unions by reaffirming the importance of unions to our communities and by taking actions such as contacting employers and urging them not to interfere with employee free choice, issuing public statements, honoring picket lines, attending rallies, sponsoring public forums, and otherwise supporting union organizing?"

Speaking about the SEIU questionnaire Bob McDonnell remarked, "Virginia's Right to Work law is a pillar of our private sector free enterprise system. The SEIU's opposition to Virginia's Right to Work law and their advocacy for Card Check puts them on the wrong side of the best interests of both Virginia's workers and employers. I will not answer a questionnaire from a group that is openly hostile to secret ballot elections and free choice as to whether to join a union when a worker gets a job. Every candidate who supports expanding free enterprise and creating jobs for our citizens should strongly support the Right to Work law and oppose Card Check."

Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling noted, "Virginia's strong pro-business environment is founded in our Right to Work law. Given the economic challenges facing Virginia families and businesses, the fact that SEIU is outwardly advocating for Card Check and the elimination of the Right to Work, and using its repeal as a determining factor for their endorsement, is very troubling. Creating new jobs and getting our economy moving again is too important to be cast aside in the attempt to gain favor of a special interest group and their financial donations. Clearly, Right to Work and the ability of businesses to maintain and create new jobs is under attack in Washington and Richmond. I encourage my fellow candidates for statewide office to refuse to complete this anti-business, anti-jobs questionnaire."

Virginia is one of 22 Right to Work states in the country. In Right to Work states employees cannot be forced to become union members or pay union dues as a condition of employment. Studies have found that Right to Work states enjoy greater private sector employment growth rates than non-Right to Work states. In addition, this week the American Legislative Exchange Council announced its 2009 Economic Competitiveness Index. Utah was ranked first in the nation with the organization specifically noting the state's Right to Work law as a key reason for the ranking. Virginia was ranked fourth.

Unions have dramatically increased their political presence and donations to Virginia candidates and parties in recent years. The Washington Post recently reported that this past election cycle three individual Unions gave over $500,000 to the Democratic Party of Virginia in just September and October. These donations were some of the largest received by the Party in recent memory. From 1997 to 2004 union donations in Virginia totaled $4.5 million. But in the last three years, from 2005 to 2008, union donations to Virginia candidates and committees have skyrocketed to $6.2 million. The SEIU donated $50,000 to Sharon Bulova (D) in her campaign for Chairman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors this past February.

In a recent union picket line outside a Hilton Hotel in Northern Virginia all three Democratic gubernatorial candidates, and two Democratic candidates for Lieutenant Governor, were in attendance.
