McDonnell and Goodlatte in downtown Staunton

Berry's Natural Way on Bevereley Street has natural foods and products.

On a campaign swing through the SWAC area Monday morning, Republican gubernatorial candidate Bob McDonnell met with citizens at Rowe's Restaurant in Staunton followed by a visit to historic downtown Staunton shops. Accompanying him was Congressman Bob Goodlatte and 20th House District candidate Dickie Bell along with current Del. Chris Saxman.

At a stop at Berry's Natural Way on Beverley Street, they stopped to talk with local Republican volunteer Alex Davis, manager of the store. Former secretary of the Staunton GOP Committee, he has been an active volunteer for GOP candidates since his days as a Teenage Republican at Robert E. Lee High School during the 2004 Bush campaign.

Mr. Davis was happy to see fellow Republicans and remarked, "It's good that conservatives are coming into downtown Staunton and meeting with business owners. Staunton has taken a big hit from the liberal agenda and even went for Obama in November. We would like to see it return to the 'red' Republican column."

Today's visit was a continuation of Mr. McDonnell's travels around the Commonwealth, listening and visiting with citizens in the months leading up to Election Day as he talks about creating new jobs and rural economic development in these financial hard times. He has also discussed his call for lifetime monitoring for dangerous sexually violent predators, and has announced plans to help create the best commercial spaceport in America at Wallops Island on the Eastern Shore.

Bob McDonnell, the former Virginia Attorney General, is leading in the polls over his opponent with the Washington Post's latest poll showing him leading by 15% among likely voters. His positive, solutions-driven campaign continues to appeal to Virginia voters. Jody Lawrence with the Staunton News Leader has more.
