Chaz recognized electeds and grassroots leaders, and then introduced his former boss, Del./Governor/Senator George Allen ... "one of the best mentors I ever had."

Is it a rose between two thorns ... or a thorn between two roses....

All eyes were on Gov. Allen as he addressed the crowd. Chaz sat with his uneaten lunch before him ... he finally picked up his fork to cut into the chicken but couldn't get the skin off ... he tugged with his fork but it wouldn't let go ... and finally he put down his fork and gave up, waiting to eat after the event was over.

A grassroots leader with Gov. Allen.

Peter Foster (left), campaign chairman for Del. Matt Lohr, helped bring in a landslide victory. Peter, who is from Chesterfield County, said he is going home for a while before heading out to his next political job.

"Ladies and gentleman ... Patriots of the Valley ... good afternoon, all!"

The familiar booming voice of former Gov. and U.S. Senator George Allen rang out in the private dining room of the Woodside Grill in Harrisonburg on Friday as 75 Republicans from the Sixth District gathered to fellowship and hear from the Governor.

The crowd included Sen. and Mrs. Mark Obenshain, Del. Matt Lohr, Ray Coughlin and Carrie Wilson of the Harrisonburg School Board, conservative activist Suzanne Curran of Shenandoah County, Barb Tillett of Augusta, David and Sherry Huffman, Ray Schneider who disseminates information to Harrisonburg-Rockingham and beyond, and Peggy and Gary Huffman of Augusta.

Also present was Myron Rhodes ... the Republitarian blogger ... who offered a very sincere invocation. I wasn't one who gasped (read his six-line update ... obviously, he's not as wordy as I) but was a tad surprised. No offense. From what I've read, he is a man of faith ... and was wearing a trademark baseball cap (apparently he wears them often).

George Allen was engaging and energetic, covering a gamut of issues including America's increasing debt to China and other foreign countries, our need for energy independence and his work with the American Energy Freedom Center.

He talked of campaigning with 26-year-old Will Moorefield in southwestern Virginia who ran against tax-and-trade and advanced his belief in coal energy in that area of the Commonwealth where coal is king, suggesting clean and creative uses as well as keeping and creating jobs in a job-starved region. Mr. Moorefield won in Tuesday's election.

The Governor talked about hydroelectric power and coal, about the upcoming Copenhagen U.N. Climate Change Conference where Barack Obama plans to sign the treaty whether Americans want him to or not, a treaty that China and other countries will not sign.

He talked of hearing from folks across the country who had called to express their excitement at Virginia's big Republican win on Tuesday, and of a bipartisan effort with Democrat Paul Goldman to modernize old school buildings that are at least 50 years old. By offering a tax credit, the cost of renovation is reduced 30%, creating jobs, saving taxpayer money, providing energy efficient schools, and providing a newly-renovated environment for students to learn.

Follow-up questions dealt with a number of subjects and he answered them all, noting we are common sense conservatives. During comments about nuclear energy, Ray Schneider commented that the U.S. Navy has gone 34 years without a nuclear accident.

Noting we are nearing Thanksgiving, his favorite holiday, George Allen thanked those present for standing strong for freedom and caring about America, and added that Virginia is showing America the way and standing firm.

As an aside, Mike Meredith resigned Thursday as Rockingham County GOP Chair. The reins are now in the hands of Vice-Chairman David Huffman.
