Today in Raleigh: Krispy Kreme 4-mile run

College students at North Carolina State University dreamed up the idea of this unusual race in 2004 to raise money for North Carolina Children's Hospital, and it has grown in popularity ever since the first race brought out 12 competitors.

This morning at 8:30, the first of 7,500 runners and walkers took off in Raleigh to take on the Krispy Kreme Challenge. Included in the pack are two runners from Blacksburg, Va, and it will be fun to get the up-close-and-personal details of the race from one of them later today after his adventure.

The challenge is simple: Run two miles, eat a dozen Krispy Kreme doughnuts, and then run back the same two miles to the start line.

Oh, wait! There's one more challenge: it all has to be done in an hour.

With sponsors like Skybound Designs, ESPN Radio: 99.9 The Fan, 620 AM The Buzz, Bay6, Webassign, Visit Raleigh!, Precision Race, Athlete’s Foot, Articulon, Park Scholarships, Planet Fitness, Red Hat, and DSI Comedy Theater, the event is sure to, once again, be a success.

Great young people coming together for a great cause. Can't wait to hear about how it all went!
