Serving guests since 1904, the Highland Inn is located on Monterey's Main Street.
The front door of the inn seems to invite history lovers inside.
When we stopped by Saturday, there was a line waiting to eat in the dining room.
We sat in the rocking chairs and people-watched for a while even though there was a chilly wind coming across the porch.
A Virginia Historic Landmark, the Highland Inn was build in the commercial Queen Anne style for $6,000.
The inn has its own legends and ghosts that were part of the town's past. If you get a chance, stop by and set a spell, eat in the dining room, or stay overnight. A Chamber of Commerce information center is located on the first floor with maps and information about Highland and the surrounding area.
