Anthony Bedell, grassroots star of GOP Advance

Fairfax County GOP Chairman Anthony Bedell celebrated his birthday at last Saturday's Republican Advance in Williamsburg ... and the GOP gave him a birthday present for his hard work in bringing in blue Fairfax County for Bob McDonnell. Anthony worked long hours to achieve the turnaround and he was recognized by RPV with Best Unit.

Today Too Conservative is reporting Anthony may not run for reelection as chair. Long hours will burn out the most ardent volunteer, and apparently there has been the usual sniping and backbiting from within his own troops who fail to see the larger overall picture. It happens in the Republican ranks ... the Democrats deal with it ... every group has the naysayers.

Congratulations to Anthony for the wins and for his well-earned recognition at the Advance. Together ... we WILL make a difference!

The always popular George Allen at 2009 Republican Advance

The always popular Gov. George Allen attended Saturday's New Media Roundtable discussion at the 2009 RPV Advance in Williamsburg. A good sport, he rolled with the punches when I stopped while moderating the workshop to recognize his presence and take a blog photo. The overflow crowd applauded as he rose and told a joke about his beloved Redskins ... the room roared with laugher ... and there was more applause as he sat down to take in the remainder of the workshop. It was priceless. Thanks, Governor!

Just after the start of the workshop, I had seen the Governor working his way across the back of the ampitheater and snapped his photo.

Del. Ben Cline (left rear), blogger Tom White (left front), former Albemarle GOP Chairman Keith Drake (left center) and others enjoyed the Governor's comments.

George Allen (back center) listened as panelists talked.

Keith Drake talked with Gov. Allen at the conclusion of the workshop.

RPV embraces new media workshops, bloggers at 2009 Advance

At the Republican Advance over the weekend, the New Media Roundtable panel was made up of (from right) Krystle Weeks, Tucker Martin, Vince Harris, Ford O'Connell, and Jason Kenney.

I took photos of the panel and audience from the podium. How many opportunities do you have to blog while moderating a panel?

It was a well-informed group with good input about new media tools and how the GOP made up lost ground during the 2009 campaign season.

Tucker Martin (left) was Director of Communications for the 2009 McDonnell campaign ... Vince Harris (blue shirt) was Director of New Media for the 2009 McDonnell campaign.

The Republican Party of Virginia featured five new media workshops at last weekend's 2009 Advance in Williamsburg ... and the size of the crowds showed it to be a topic of interest to many.

RPV tapped some of the best and brightest in its new media stable:
- New Media 101 was led by Jason Kenney with help from Krystle Weeks;
- New Media: Digital Politics for Campaigns & Organizers consisted of a panel made up of Steve Pearson and Ford O'Connell from Project Virginia;
- New Media: Web Video - Powerful, Cheap, and Easy was led by Steve Albertson, Tim Murtaugh, and Greg Letiecq;
- Raising and Spending Money Online: Tips & Tactics for Campaigns, Committees, and Advocacy Groups was led by Vince Harris.
I had the honor of being asked to moderate the Virginia New Media Roundtable workshop which was described in the program as "a discussion among leading Republican new media activists and professionals ... discussing the role of blogging and other new media in shaping the historic 2009 election, and the path forward to victory in 2010 ... shared ideas about the importance of the GOP's reclamation of new media dominance and what it means for the future of the Republican Party."

It was a great panel of young new media personalities....
- Tucker Martin, Director of Communications, 2009 McDonnell campaign
- Vince Harris, Director of New Media, 2009 McDonnell campaign
- Jason Kenney, blogger, RedStormPAC administrator
- Ford O'Connell, Project Virginia
- Krystle Weeks, blogger
The hour went quickly as the panel began by introducing themselves to the audience and then got to know the audience by asking how many blogged, how many read the blogs, how many Tweeted, and how many were on Facebook. We were pleasantly surprised at the sheer number of attendees who participated in those new media tools.

The reality was that just a year ago the hot topic at the 2008 Advance was how badly Republicans had been beaten in the use of new media. The buzz was all about how Barack Obama and his followers had made tremendous use of tools such as text messaging, online videos, Facebook, Twitter, and other social media to feed, grow, and organize the mass of young people and new voters who made a difference for him at the ballot box.

Just a year ago at the Advance, on the spur of the moment, four bloggers created a make-shift, last-minute "bloggers row" at the water table in the rear of the room to live-blog the Attorney General debate. Three of those bloggers were part of Saturday's panel -- Krystle Weeks, Jason Kenney, and Lynn Mitchell. The fourth was Shaun Kenney who is now a Supervisor-elect in Fluvana County.

What a difference a year makes! Just one short year later, in Virginia, Republicans claimed dominance in all those social media tools and really outshone the Democrats at every level. Here at this Advance, we were blogging the event and had five featured workshops. Earlier this year there was an impressive Bloggers Row at the RPV Convention consisting of 30+ bloggers.

The panel discussed what allowed that complete turnaround, about Republican new media efforts, 2010 and beyond, online fundraising efforts, how to disseminate information about GOP events such as the Advance or health care townhalls or Eric Cantor's Republican Roundup, and more.

We had time for only one question although many others had their hands up. There was much interest, and a huge thank you goes out to RPV Chairman Pat Mullins for making new media a priority along with his encouragement and support. Also thanks go to New Media Committee Chairman Cortland Putbrese along with Steve Albertson and Lori-Ann Miller.

We had positive feedback after the workshop ... some said the information offered was extremely useful while others said they had learned new use of tools and looked forward to putting it to use.

Rep. Eric Cantor's thank you dinner

One of the many colonial era-inspired wreaths decorating the doors and windows of the Williasmburg Lodge.

Outdoor twinkly lights mirrored indoor twinkly lights....

The walkways were festive and inviting.

The Williamsburg Lodge is a beautiful place especially at Christmas ... and this year was no exception. On Friday night during the 2009 Advance, it was the setting of Republican House Whip Eric Cantor's Christmas dinner with Virginia Republican Party leaders. The Congressional District chairs were there as well as Del.-elect Barbara Comstock, Del. Bill Janis, Del. Phil Cox ... and other leaders especially from the 7th Congressional District that is represented by Congressman Cantor.

The Lodge's famous seafood buffet was fabulous, the ambiance was festive, and the fellowship was heart-warming. Our table by the fireplace was the perfect setting as SWAC Husband and I enjoyed lively dinner conversation with Mike Thomas, 1st Vice Chairman of RPV Central Committee; Rick Neel, Treasurer of RPV Central Committee; Kevin Gentry, Eastern Vice Chairman of RPV Central Committee, and his wife Anne, who graduated from William and Mary, and their son; and Connie Bedell, Fairfax County GOP leader (whose son Anthony was the star of this year's Advance for his fantastic work bringing in GOP candidates in NoVa).

In the buffet line it was an honor to meet Del.-elect Barbara Comstock who was a delight to talk with. She is from NoVa and we talked about the blogs and their part in campaigns and the internet climate during this year's election.

Seventh District Chairman Linwood Cobb welcomed everyone and thanked them for being there, and introduced Rep. Cantor. The room stood and cheered our host who thanked everyone for their leadership in this year's elections. He talked about the winter of 1776 when George Washington's troops were up against the much larger British army but persevered and never gave up ... and the need to retake Congress in 2010. His remarks were uplifting and encouraging ... and a reminder of last year's dinner when he talked about how we had lost our way and the need to get back on the path of Republican principles and winning again. This year Virginia Republicans had won and started back on that path. And then he wished everyone a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and Happy New Year!

As we left the dining room, gift bags were handed to each guest. The tag said, "With sincere appreciation for all that you do. Diana and Eric Cantor." Inside was the new book by Dr. Frank Luntz, the pollster often seen on Fox News Channel and who addressed the Virginia Delegation at the 2008 Republican National Convention in Minneapolis-Saint Paul: "What Americans Really Want ... Really: The Truth About Our Hopes, Dreams, and Fears." The Congressman had written inside the cover, "Thanks for your leadership! Let's keep on winning together and take back Congress in '10! [signed] Eric Cantor (VA-7)."

I so wanted that book ... thank you, Rep. Cantor, for my holiday reading material. The evening ended as everyone boarded the shuttles back to the Advance to attend hospitality suites.

It was a positive gathering with a positive message in a friendly environment. Thank you to the Congressman and Chairman Linwood Cobb for inviting us to be a part of it.

Republican Party of Virginia embraces new media

New media ... meet the Republican Party of Virginia.

After 2008's presidential campaign when the Obama team outshown everyone in the use of new media tools, RPV is making up ground. One of those attending Saturday's workshops was Karyn McDermott who wrote Republican Party of Virginia embraces new media.

RPV Chairman Pat Mullins came into leadership of the Party six months ago saying he was giving high priority to new media ... and that showed with new media carrying five of Saturday's workshops. Watch for photos and more commentary....

2009 Republican Advance is this weekend in Williamsburg

The Grand Illumination ... Busch Garden's Christmas Town ... and the Republican Advance will make it a busy weekend in Williamsburg this weekend. We have much to celebrate even as we roll up our sleeves preparing to get to work for the future.

Friday night's reception honoring the Virginia GOP Congressional delegation will feature Governor George Allen. Saturday's breakfast will feature Virginia's former First Lady Susan Allen along with Mike Farris, founder of the Home School Legal Defense Association. Saturday's luncheon features Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling and Atty. General-elect Ken Cuccinelli with a keynote address by Governor-elect Bob McDonnell. Saturday night's banquet will feature a keynote address by Congressman Eric Cantor.

Hospitality suites will be held Friday and Saurday nights, and I received a hospitality suite invitation today from state Sen. Mark Obenshain.

The RPV New Media Committee has five workshops planned on Saturday and will have bloggers covering the event throughout the weekend.

I will be blogging the event as well as moderating a new media workshop. It should be a fun-filled weekend, and I'm looking forward to catching up with fellow bloggers from around the state.

Republican Advance ... more about Paul supporters

The Richmond Times Dispatch reported the following about the Ron Paul supporters at the Republican Advance:
Republican officials dismissed the poll's outcome, noting that Paul has been concentrating on winning straw polls all over the country.

Paul bused in young supporters. They waved signs and shouted loudly when his name was mentioned.

"He brought people in here. What is more critical to look at is who finished second and third. That is a more true indicator of the feelings of the Republican Party of Virginia," said Tucker Watkins of Randolph in Charlotte County, a former 5th District GOP chairman.
Interesting....

Republican Advance ... Chris Saxman

Saw Chris Saxman out tonight at the hospitality suites. I walked over and hugged him ... I was so proud of him today ... he had to make a tough decision and then announce to Republican activists who had been watching the past three weeks. I want to thank Chris for his leadership. He looked relaxed tonight ... typical Saxman ... that's my delegate....

Republican Advance ... New Media seminar with Shaun Kenney

Attended the New Media seminar this morning moderated by Shaun Kenney with a panel consisting of John Henke of New Media Strategy; Matt Lira from Congressman Eric Cantor's office; and Mike Krempansky, a Senior Vice President with Daniel J. Eidelman Company.

It was an informative and interesting seminar with discussion from the panel and questions from the group of about 50 who attended. Good information all around.

I'm off to meet the SWAC crew for lunch. More later....

Republican Advance ... Breakfast with Bill Bolling

Breakfast this morning will feature Lt. Governor Bill Bolling and those in attendance will receive one of his Virginia Christmas ornaments that he is famous for passing out at the Advance each year. GOP Advance next weekend ... calling all Republican bloggers!

I am looking forward to next weekend's Republican Advance in Northern Virginia. At last year's Advance at the Homestead, Attorney General Bob McDonnell addressed a small group of perhaps 12 to 15 conservative bloggers including Shaun Kenney at an impromptu gathering. This year Shaun, as Communications Director of the Republican Party of Virginia, has planned some blogging discussions/panels that will be fun as we meet others from around the state who blog for the conservative cause. If you plan to attend I would love to know so I can look you up. Conservative bloggers .... see you at the Advance!
