Autumn in the Shenandoah Valley: 9th Annual Pumpkin Fest in Churchville

So your kids want a pumpkin and you would like some apples for fall baking? Instead of buying them in the grocery store, make a day of it with the kids at Cestari Farm's Annual Pumpkin Fest in Augusta County. The weekends of Oct. 13-14 and Oct. 20-21 will find locals and those from outside the area joining in the fun of a real, live sheep farm.

- Pumpkin Patch: A ride on the hay wagon will get you to the pumpkin patch where you can pick your own big fat orange pumpkin for jack-o-lanterns or pies. Or, if you don't want to peruse the patch, you can purchase an already-picked pumpkin at the barn.

- Pumpkin Games: Pumpkin Chucking, Pumpkin Rolling

- Corn Maze: Roam the maze and see if you can get lost in the pathways that wind through the cornstalks. As a child I used to love to run down the rows of cornstalks on my grandparents' farm; not I can roam through them in a quest to find the way out.

- The Haunted Barn: Ooooo ... three levels of "spookiness" -- mild, medium, and "real scary" -- are waiting for anyone willing to test their fortitude against the ghosts of the barn. Designed by the ShenanArts players, a local drama company, it is sure to be a treat for all.

- Games: Musical straw bales, costume contests

- Feed the Sheep: This is, after all, a working sheep farm that produces wool products. Some of the sheep will be in a pen area for youngsters to feed.

- Homemade food including apple dumplings, pastries, more

All of this in a setting that is God's country otherwise known as Augusta County ... mountains in the background, red barn and fields of corn and pumpkins. Come see the fall mountains and enjoy Pumpkin Fest in the Valley!

New Waynesboro Target opens today

The new Target store opened today at 8:00 am and is a welcome addition to the shopping lineup in the SWAC area. The first store to open in the Waynesboro Town Center, Target will eventually be joined by others including Michaels, Kohl's, TJ Maxx, and Bed, Bath and Beyond.

With a local Town Center, trips to Target in Harrisonburg and Short Pump will be eliminated. Shopping just became a whole lot easier in this part of the Valley.

"Defending the American Dream:" Duane Sand

During the opening of the "Defending the American Dream" summit on Friday, there was a roll call of the states and, just as in national political conventions, a spokesperson backed up by other convention-goers extolled the virtues of that state.

The last state called was North Dakota ... and they announced "Duane Sand" was the State Director of Americans For Prosperity. My head swiveled around when I heard the name ... I recognized it because I had met him seven years earlier.

Flash back to the Republican National Convention of 2000 in Philadelphia when George W. Bush became the GOP nominee to run on the ballot for President. It was the last night of the convention, and we were on the shuttle bus going back to our hotel from the convention center. Sitting in front of me was a young man holding the "North Dakota" sign because they had announced the delegates could take them as they left. I joked with him about him getting the sign ... and we struck up a conversation.

His name was Duane Sand and he was running for Senate. He had been a Navy submarine commander who was now hoping to get into public office, and he was walking across the state of North Dakota to meet its citizens and call attention to his campaign. He gave me his business card and we stayed in touch for a while afterwards ... he did not win the election ... and then lost touch.

Fast forward to last Friday at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, DC, when I heard the name of that same young man. I determined to try and find him in the crowds before the day was over which wasn't easy ... there were hundreds of people milling about.

My opportunity to talk with him came late in the afternoon when I was walking through the crowded corridors on my way to a session ... and there was Duane Sand standing in front of me. While I knew he would not remember me, I recalled to him our meeting seven years ago on the shuttle bus while he was walking the state in his bid for U.S. Senate. We talked and he gave me his new business card and said he may be running for office again. Perhaps this time he will achieve his dream.

The world sometimes seems very small....

Citizens Task Force Against Pornography - SWAC

The Citizens Task Force Against Pornography held its second meeting last night in Staunton with approximately 30 people turning out to continue the push toward strict zoning ordinances for adult businesses locating in Staunton and Augusta County. Staunton's Planning Commission had met at 4:00 Monday afternoon and presented a rough draft of a proposed ordinance which was hashed out and tweaked. A revised rough draft utilizing yesterday's Planning Commission revisions will be available Friday.

Former Staunton School Board member Andrea Oakes presented the draft to the group who made a few suggestions but, by and large, they were in agreement with the proposed ordinance which was based on one already in use in Henrico County.

Over 3,000 names have been collected on petitions from Staunton, Waynesboro, and Augusta County (SWAC), and they will be presented to the respective governing bodies. Since City Council and Augusta Board of Supervisors have said they want to hear from citizens about this issue, everyone was encouraged to contact their representatives to urge that they pass the ordinance.

Travis Smithdeal, candidate for Pastures District on the Augusta Board of Supervisors, addressed the group while holding petitions in his hand with hundreds of signatures. He will appear before the Board of Supervisors at this week's Wednesday meeting to encourage that they be proactive instead of reactive, and move ahead with an ordinance for the county. Tracy Pyles (D-Pastures) has indicated he does not feel it is necessary to put ordinances in place to restrict adult businesses in the county.

State Budget / Rainy Day Fund

· Maintaining a structurally balanced state budget by not inappropriately using the state’s “Rainy Day Fund” during a non-recessionary period to address a nearly $300 million forecasting error by the Kaine Administration, without which an announced $641 million budget shortfall by the Governor on October 1 would be too minimal to allow for such a withdrawal.

· Ensuring effective, long-term budget management practices are followed. Republicans believe it is ill advised to begin the practice of using the state’s “nest egg” when the economy is growing, albeit at a slower rate. Doing so runs the risk of establishing a bad and undesirable precedent that suggests the Commonwealth can overspend taxpayer resources without consequence. As national rating services have singled out the Rainy Day Fund as a key factor in preserving Virginia’s AAA bond rating, an imprudent or convenient use of these taxpayer dollars could unnecessarily endanger the Commonwealth’s hard-earned status.

Transportation

· Applying the abusive driver fees to out-of-state residents. While the version of HB 3202 that was approved by the General Assembly in February included this provision, Governor Kaine’s completely rewritten version of the bill did not.

· Eliminating the fees for crimes below Class Two misdemeanors and reevaluating the remaining higher offenses for their seriousness. Additionally, the General Assembly will reassess the reckless driving statute (not changed by HB 3202) to ensure the speeds resulting in reckless driving charges are reasonable and reflect current speed limits. For offenses that will no longer be subjected to the fees, anyone convicted of the deleted offenses after July 1, 2007 would not have to pay an abuser fee. Another change under consideration would give judges the discretion to waive the fees for those subjected to them for driving on a suspended license where the suspension was solely due to failure to pay a fine or fee.

Mental Health Services

· Refining the standard for involuntary commitment, making it more understandable and comprehensive, including criteria for those persons who evidence a likelihood of future danger to self or others. The impetus for this change arose out of the tragedies at Virginia Tech in April 2007. The new standard would allow the detention of individuals known to be a danger to themselves or others, but are not at the exact time of their involuntary commitment hearing. This change will end the deficient application of the current standard of “imminent danger to self and others,” ensuring the most serious cases of mental illness will be handled correctly and not fall through the system. The members of the House Health, Welfare and Institutions and Senate Education and Health Committees and the Courts of Justice Committees of both bodies will develop appropriate language that properly balances public safety with protections of individual liberty.

· Expressly requiring a representative of the local Community Service Board (CSB) to attend all commitment hearings for their clients. According to a study completed by the Virginia Supreme Court Chief Justice’s Commission on Mental Health Law Reform, CSB representatives only attended one-half of the commitment hearings held in May 2007. Enacting this change will ensure the intent of the Code of Virginia is clear and ensure this critical step in the commitment process has sufficient accountability and directly attributable responsibility.

· Expanding the successful implementation of crisis stabilizations units throughout the Commonwealth to improve access for those patients in greatest need. Increasing the number of crisis stabilization units will provide important access to individuals in emergency situations. These units were created by an initiative championed by General Assembly Republicans. Seven were instituted in 2004, with two additional units added through continued Republican leadership in the 2006-2008 state budget. Still, major populations being served by CSBs with significant case loads do not have access to these vital centers.

Health Care Reform

· Increasing access to health care service in underserved areas of the Commonwealth. The plan includes provisions to partner with Virginia’s higher education system to increase the number of medical residents assigned to underserved areas of Virginia, many of which are rural communities. In addition, the plan calls for continuing to increase the number of free clinics and community health centers that serve low-income and uninsured Virginians.

· Decreasing the reliance on Emergency Room facilities by encouraging the use of primary care physicians. By offering incentives to primary care physicians to increase the number of Medicaid patients served and by providing increased reimbursement rates for hospitals with primary care physician practices on facility grounds, access will be improved and the use of costly Emergency Room care reduced.

· Implementing recommendations on Medicaid reforms crafted by the Medicaid Revitalization Commission. These reforms, intended to control costs and streamline the delivery of services, include Enhanced Benefits Accounts for Medicaid recipients, Electronic Health Benefit Cards, increased use of electronic health records and the implementation of a web-based claims submission system.

Illegal Immigration

· Mandating that all local Sheriffs, upon a lawful arrest for a crime, confirm that person’s legal presence in the United States using the nationwide databases of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This change will streamline and strengthen statewide immigration enforcement.

· Ensuring that at least one person on duty in every jail at all times has been certified under federal 287(g) authority (named for the section of federal law that allows more effective cooperation between federal immigration officials and state and local governments). This change means that, upon a positive identification of an illegal alien, there will be a person with federal authority readily available to detain and begin deportation proceedings, after that individual has served his or her sentence.

· Creating a presumption of no bail for any person who has been charged with an offense punishable by jail or prison time and who has been determined (through ICE databases) to be illegally present in the United States. This change will help stop controversial “catch and release” activities, one of the primary ways criminal illegal aliens currently pass through existing government systems unchecked.

· Making a federal conviction for hiring illegal aliens grounds for suspension of a business license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia. This change will serve as an effective deterrent to the unlawful hiring of illegal aliens.

· Prohibiting illegal aliens from attending Virginia public institutions of higher education, unless they have a valid student visa. Recognizing that college entrance slots are fixed and limited, this change will preserve state benefits for in-state students and their families.

Property Taxes

· Creating a 20% homestead exemption on primary residences. A constitutional amendment (SJ 354, 2006) sponsored by a Republican lawmaker would authorize the General Assembly to enact legislation that will allow localities to exempt up to 20 percent of the value of residential or farm property that is the owner/occupant's primary dwelling. This amendment has already cleared its first hurdle, having secured the first of two constitutionally required approvals by the General Assembly.

· Requiring that local governments determine tax rates before authorizing a spending plan. Currently, state law requires local governments have to vote only if the rate increases, even if a reduction still results in higher revenue collections. By enacting this reform, local governments would have to justify the tax rate and the revenues produced by it before adopting a spending plan.

· Increasing transparency in assessment process. With this measure, the previous year’s assessment and rate, as well as the rate that would result in flat revenue and the proposed new rate, would be added to the public notice requirements.

· Transferring the burden of proof for assessment increases to local government when increases exceed 20 percent. Currently, homeowners have to prove that an assessment hike is unjustified. This measure would place that burden on local government when an assessment increase exceeds 20 percent n a single year.

Education / School Construction

· Creating a permanent, perpetual School Construction Revolving Fund to better assist local school districts in financing construction and renovation. Leveraging innovative public-private financing and expertise will help build needed classrooms faster, at lower costs and in a more dynamic way.

· Implementing a management structure directly involving localities to identify the most effective and responsive method to deliver state support of school construction projects to local districts in need.

· Increasing the number and size of school projects financed, maximizing the funds available year-to-year for high-priority school construction needs. This additional financing option can complement currently offered state financing programs, which have a more static, less flexible one-size-fits-all approach.

Autumn in the Shenandoah Valley: The maple tree beside my deck....

The maple tree beside my deck has a few more gold leaves on it this week....

The bass tree lost most of its leaves over the weekend.

Bass tree leaves are waiting to be raked....

The leaves are slowly beginning to turn color high up on the mountain ridges. Driving I-81 over the weekend and looking out over the mountains, I could see a few colorful trees amongst the ones that are still green. Virginia creeper leaves have turned bright red as have many of the sassafrass tree leaves. Fall is in process....

"Defending the American Dream:" Michael Steele

Michael Steele is a man I have admired since first hearing him three years ago when he addressed the Republican Advance. Former Lt. Governor of Maryland, he is a conservative leader whose background proves the American dream is there for anyone who wants to work hard enough to achieve it. Born and raised in the projects, he became the first college graduate in his family when he received his undergraduate degree from Johns Hopkins University and his law degree from Georgetown University.

Steele went on to become Maryland's first statewide elected African-American when he became Lt. Governor ... and he has been able to spread his message of hope through hard work to many in the years since while working with Americans For Prosperity.

Addressing the "Defending the American Dream" summit in DC on Friday, where he received a rousing welcome, he reiterated that he believes in smaller government, reduced spending, and allowing tax payers to keep more of their hard-earned money.

He said our focus as Republicans has to be on winning. He lost his U.S. Senate bid in 2006 but he is not looking back ... and urged us not to look back either but, instead, set our eyes on the goal of winning in the future. Republicans, he said, should make the Bush tax cuts permanent and kill the death tax.

Looking out over the standing-room only packed ballroom at the Mayflower Hotel, Steele emphasized that the grassroots are the heart and soul of America.

Michael Steele ... look for him to do great things in the future ... a leader to make Republicans proud.

"Defending the American Dream:" Energizing the Center-Right

One of the sessions at Friday's "Defending the American Dream" summit was "Energizing the Center-Right." It was by invitation only and featured Tim Phillips, Americans for Prosperity President, and Grover Norquist, President of Americans for Tax Reform. I was not invited -- and have no idea what the criteria was to be invited -- but would have liked to hear what ideas they had for "energizing the center-right" since that is where my grassroots activism is rooted.

So ... I decided to attend the "Emerging Issues in 2008: The Left's Strategy and Our Solution" seminar in that time slot ... but the room was blown out with people. It was standing room only out into the hallway.

As it turned out, I ended up spending that time with fellow Sixth District leaders as we talked about upcoming events, issues, and elections so it was time well-spent.

"Defending the American Dream:" Delegate Chris Saxman

Delegate Chris Saxman addressed the Virginia delegation at our lunch session Friday at the "Defending the American Dream" summit in Washington, DC.

Saxman, the driving force behind the Virginia "Cost Cutting Caucus," has been one of the leaders in paring down costs, removing waste, and bringing sunshine to the layers of bureaucracy otherwise known as "state spending."

Del. Saxman is a dynamic speaker, and Friday was no exception. He knows how to communicate with a crowd especially an enthusiastic group of fellow thinkers and activists. Virginia, he said, has to be the example for the rest of the country in showing fiscal responsibility. Electeds, he continued, need to turn off the spin and listen to the citizens.

As a small business owner, Saxman's ideas on limited spending and cost-cutting resonate with tax-weary voters and have made him one of the state leaders with Americans For Prosperity. He and Mark Obenshain represent what we need more of in the Republican Party ... strong conservative leaders who are not afraid to publicly stand up for what they believe in.

"Defending the American Dream:" Sen. Mark Obenshain

Shenandoah Valley State Senator Mark Obenshain (R-Harrisonburg) addressed the Virginia delegation during our lunch session at Friday's "Defending the American Dream" summit. Sen. Obenshain is not my senator but I admire his conservative views on social and financial issues. I have heard him speak a number of times over the years ... but Friday was one of his best speeches. Perhaps buoyed by the enthusiastic crowd around him, he was on his game, punching all the conservative issues and receiving applause and/or laughter throughout his remarks.

Unabashedly conservative, Sen. Obenshain said he could not believe the tax increase that was proposed in 2004 at a time when the state was doing well. He has stood against the tide of the State Senate with three or four other conservative Senators against Republican Senators who backed the democrat governor's tax increase proposal -- and the 2004 tax increase was no exception. Obenshain stood his ground against the tax increase.

He proposed letting businesses operate without the yoke of government regulations ... cracking down on illegal immigration ... being mindful of government's use of eminent domain.

He reminded folks that April 30 was informally known as "Tax Freedom Day" because that was when they finally had worked enough to pay their income taxes.

He received loud applause and cheers when he said we need to stop government from driving God and faith from our schools and society ... and reiterated the conservative values of the Shenandoah Valley, the reddest part of Virginia.

His message is what conservatives want to hear ... our electeds standing up and saying what they believe in ... and Senator Mark Obenshain did not disappoint. We are grateful for his conservative leadership in the Virginia State Senate.

"Defending the American Dream:" Bob McDonnell's remarks at Virginia lunch

Attorney General Bob McDonnell addressed the Virginia delegation at Friday's "Defending the American Dream" summit as they gathered at a lunch after the morning session and before the afternoon seminars. Speaking before a standing-room only crowd, AG McDonnell questioned Governor Tim Kaine's plan to use rainy-day funds to make up over $640 million in shortages.

According to The Washington Times, McDonnell remarked:

"Liberals in Virginia are saying we need to raid the rainy-day fund so we can start some more programs for pre-K education when we have a $600 million budget deficit. It's not rainy," and added that $641 "sounds like a lot of money," but that former Gov. L. Douglas Wilder "got us through a $2 billion deficit without raiding the rainy-day fund and not raising taxes."

Noting that while the liberals want to raid the rainy-day fund, he had enacted a 5% decrease in the AG's budget to help with the deficit, and other agencies should be able to do the same. Although Virginia has been voted the best-managed state for two years in a row, McDonnell said that with a budget that has doubled in ten years there is still much work to do.

Even after calling for budget cuts and raiding the rainy-day fund to fill the void of the deficit, Kaine still wants to move forward on his pre-kindergarten proposal of $75 million a year.

The Washington Times summed it up:

The attorney general's comments reflected a daylong theme at the summit that centered on rekindling the desire to control spending.

Mr. McDonnell drew laughs from the crowd when he paraphrased a statement famously attributed to President Reagan.

"Government spending is like a baby's alimentary canal. It has an insatiable appetite on one end, and no responsibility at the other," he said.

Americans for Prosperity hosted a wonderful event in the "Defending the American Dream" Summit held Thursday and Friday at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, DC. Attendees were able to hear from seven -- seven! -- Republican presidential candidates in one location plus many other speakers, and participate in educational seminars with some of the nation's leaders in fiscal responsibility. "Defending the American Dream:" Dinesh D'Souza, author

Rounding out a tribute to President Ronald Reagan, Dinesh D'Souza who authored Ronald Reagan: How an Ordinary Man Became an Extraordinary Leader realized the hour was late (it was almost 9 pm) and folks were ready for the buffet dinner that was already in place across the hallway ... so he opened by saying he would quote King Henry VIII who told one of his wives, "I won't keep you very long," to laughter from the crowd.

I had been alerted to this young man by Jacob Parrish, a young Republican I worked with during the recent Primary in the SWAC area. Jacob had heard Dinesh speak to a group of James Madison University students and encouraged me to hear him ... and I was not disappointed.

Dinesh's Ronald Reagan book sits on my bookshelf, a purchase from one of my trips to the Green Valley Bookfair in Mt. Crawford, and is a wonderful insight into the man who became actor who became governor who became president.

Dinesh proved to be knowledgeable and humorous during his remarks ... and respectful of Ronald Reagan, a man he quoted several times and whom he obviously held in high esteem. True to his word, he kept his remarks brief ... but I could have listened longer.

He ended by encouraging we continue the conservative path and closed by asking:

"If not now ... when? If not us ... who?"

Indeed.

"Defending the American Dream:" Ron Paul

Ron Paul had turned me off during the Presidential debates. His stand against the war on terrorism did it, and his libertarian tendancies made him sound like an isolationist as he proposed the U.S. take care of itself and let the rest of the world fend. He seemed to say the U.S. had gone out looking for this war ... as if 9/11 had never happened!

As he spoke at Friday's "Defending the American Dream" summit, it was obvious he had some ardent followers in the crowd ... but most listened politely and were ready to move on to the next speaker. I appreciate that Paul's vote is not for sale and he is a strict constitutionalist.

If I got this right in my notes, he proposed removing the income tax and replacing it with ... nothing. He said if we had the proper-sized government we wouldn't need all the money brought in by taxes. I can tell you right now that is not going to happen in my lifetime.

I am sure he has represented his area of Texas well but he did not inspire me to want to support him for his bid as President.

"Defending the American Dream:" Mike Huckabee

Mike Huckabee, former Republican governor of Arkansas, was following others in a program that was running late Friday morning at the "Defending the American Dream" summit in DC. Realizing the noon hour was approaching, he joked, "Blessed are the brief for they shall be invited again," to laugher and applause from the crowd.

Conservatives are blessed to have a deep bench of leaders in the cause, and Mike Huckabee does not disappoint. His idea to scrap the tax code and put in place a consumption tax was met with applause. He advocated letting sunshine in on government spending by making financial records accessible to the public. He is also alarmed that so much manufacturing has been outsourced that we are not capable of turning out enough weapons to protect ourselves if necessary.

Good ideas, good conservative ... but, like Brownback, I am not sure he will find enough people to back him to last until the final leg of this race. Time will tell....

"Defending the American Dream:" Sam Brownback

Senator Sam Brownback (R-KS) walked on stage at the "Defending the American Dream" summit wheeling a dollie stacked high with tax tomes. Those, he said, should be taken behind a barn and killed with a dull ax which caused a huge roar of laughter from the crowd.

Brownback advocates a flat tax and personal Social Security accounts. He has good conservative fiscal ideas ... but not sure the public is going to be behind him in a big-enough way to make him a contender. Time will tell....

"Defending the American Dream:" John McCain

Two words: McCain-Feingold.

I am appreciative to John McCain for his service to this country and for his stand in the War in Iraq. He was a prisoner of war during Vietnam and suffered more than we will ever realize.

Unable to attend the main event on Friday, McCain spoke at a cocktail reception Thursday evening. I was unable to find supporters possibly because of his contentious nature over the years. And then there are those two words: McCain-Feingold.

I was amazed at how many College Republicans were in attendance at AFP's "Defending the American Dream" summit. It was a welcome sight and was energizing to see the next generation of conservatives becoming actively involved in conservative politics. I don't doubt for a minute there were future office holders in that group of young people at the Mayflower.

I always enjoy seeing Jarrett Ray, President of the Virginia College Republicans, and Friday was no exception. We stood in the hallway and talked -- he attends James Madison University and my son is a 2007 graduate from there. Jarrett is always willing to roll up his sleeves and work. He introduced me to Sam, CR Secretary who attends Mary Washington but is from Charlottesville. We discovered we both attended the Win the War rally in June to counter Cindy Sheehan's Charlottesville appearance.

These are our up-and-coming young conservative leaders of the future ... and we are happy they are here. Thanks to Jarrett and all the others for the work they do on behalf of Virginia Republicans.

"Defending the American Dream:" Fred Thompson

It is hard to live up to the hype when so many people are expecting so much ... and to be fair to Fred Thompson I certainly had heard the hype and watched the excitement and seen the polls. By the time he came out on stage at the "Defending the American Dream" summit, I think I was expecting a rock star.

The stage was surrounded by cameras and it looked as if a celebrity was arriving. I am familiar with Fred Thompson as a senator from Tennessee ... but I have never seen "Law and Order," the TV show he starred in for a number of years. He and his wife Jeri walked out and waved to the standing, cheering crowd, and then Jeri exited the stage.

Thompson began by thanking everyone for the wonderful reception and joked, "Welcome to Washington. My first time in DC, as a newly elected senator, I made a big mistake. I accidentally spent some of my own money," to much laughter and applause.

He then talked about the issues that he felt were important to the country -- lower taxes to encourge peopel to work, dropping the corporate rate to 28% -- and he urged the simplification of the tax code which he said is the least efficient in the world.

He talked about his first run for the senate in Tennessee against a long-time democrat incumbent; he was down by 20% but worked hard and won by 20% -- both times that he ran -- and then left public service due to self-imposed term limits.

Besides being an actor on "Law and Order," Thompson is a lawyer who has worked in DC not only as a senator but as a staffer and a lobbyist. He is familiar with the way DC works which is good for a conservative going to the White House.

The American Thinker reported that, after a recent Thompson speech in Iowa a member of the audience called out, "Kill the terrorists, secure the border, and give me back my freedom." Thompson replied, "You just summed up my whole speech." Those are the issues that are important to most conservative voters.

Fred Thompson has been touted as the best conservative candidate in the top-runners. Perhaps talking about national security and defense brings out more of the passion in him.

I appreciated that he was willing to step to the plate last week and publicly defend Rush Limbaugh against the phony "phony soldier" attacks from the libs. It showed loyalty.

Thompson's delivery was not dynamic; guess I was expecting the actor in him to "act" like a President. But sincerity and leadership qualities go much further with me than dynamics. While he seemed a little off his game in the big session, he appeared to feel at home afterwards in the standing-room only group of Virginians. Introduced by Attorney General Bob McDonnell, Thompson received a rowdy welcome with a standing ovation from the 350 grassroots Virginia activists. He joked and fit in with the group who were appreciative to have him address their lunch session.

Winston Churchill was a poor speaker ... but he became a world leader who worked to save the world from communism. Leadership does not always come in good looks or firey speeches ... and that is what I am reminded of when it comes to Fred Thompson.

Speculation is already out there as to whether Bob McDonnell will endorse Fred Thompson especially since the other Presidential candidates have received backing from top state leaders: Bolling is backing Mitt Romney, Kilgore is backing Rudy Giuliani, John Warner is backing John McCain. Time will tell but I'm thinking the chances are good that he will.

Fred Thompson is a strong contender on my short list of candidates.

"Defending the American Dream:" Mitt Romney

From my seat at the "Defending the American Dream" evening session, I could see Governor Mitt Romney standing in the wings waiting his turn to speak. He looked Presidential ... ramrod straight posture and chiseled good looks as he attentively listened to the lead-in speakers. I know ... that sounds shallow and, no, I do not choose my candidates on looks.

What was impressive was that he delivered when he stepped to the podium. He was dynamic and received an enthusiastic reception from the crowd especially many of the College Republicans who were cheering and wearing "Mitt" lapel stickers.

Governor Romney said he believed in the principles of conservatism and strength ... that a strong America is the best chance of peace in the world ... that America's strength stops wars.

He stressed that Iranian President (terrorist) Mahmoud Ahmadinejad should not have been invited to New York ... he should have been indicted in New York.

He received a hearty laugh from the crowd when he called the three democrat presidential front-runners the "Three Taxateers" ... and then proceeded to list his stand on the issues: kill the death tax, keep the Bush tax cuts permanent, lower the marginal tax rates, hold the line on Social Security taxes, and lower corporate tax rates because that will grow more jobs and more revenue.

He said Americans should not be penalized on saving accounts and proposed those with incomes of $200,000 or less should pay no taxes on those savings.

Mitt Romney is the only Presidential candidate to sign Grover Norquist's "Americans for Tax Reform" pledge. He believes in lower spending and Presidential line-item veto power, something he said he has used often as Governor. It is time, he said, for Republicans to start acting like Republicans.

He ended by recalling a sad journey, as governor of Massachusetts, to the airport to pay respects to a Marine killed in Iraq. Standing on the tarmac, as the coffin came down the conveyor off the plane, he said his eyes filled with tears and he instinctively placed his hand over his heart in reverence and gratitude ... and as the coffin was carried off the plane, he turned toward the airport terminal ... and there, across the entire length of the building, lined shoulder-to-shoulder in front of the windows, were fellow Americans standing with their hands over their hearts in respect for this young Marine who had paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

Mitt impressed me and afterwards I talked with his Virginia volunteer to find information for further research.

I must admit I was impressed with Mitt Romney in 2002 in his role with the Olympics. Scandal-driven and in financial trouble ... and in the aftermath of 9/11 when terrorism was still very fresh on people's minds ... Romney became the head of the Salt Lake Olympic Committee and turned it around. Not only was he able to provide security that convinced people still skiddish from 9/11 to come to America and be a part of the crowds, he was also able to provide enough security to allow the President of the United States, George W. Bush, to attend the events. It's a moment I remember well because I was concerned for the President's safety ... our President in the stands with the crowd all around. Because of his leadership, Mitt Romney provided a safe and successful Olympics in the United States.

I have heard many question Romney's religion. I don't give a whit about his Morman background (I'm Baptist) ... people in the 1960s were concerned that John F. Kennedy was Catholic and it did not affect him as President. I'm not going to church with the man; I want him to lead the country.

Mitt is definitely on the short list of possibilities. He hit a home run Friday night and I'm listening.

"Defending the American Dream:" Rudy Giuliani

Rudy Giuliani captured the crowd at the "Defending the American Dream" summit at the Mayflower Hotel. As the first speaker of the day, he was charismatic, personable, funny, and comfortable in front of the fiscally conservative group.

He recounted his record as Mayor of New York City, listing all the projects that had been completed during his tenure. He talked about welfare centers that were turned into work centers. He talked about "Hillary Bonds," Hillary Clinton's recent suggestion that every baby born in American receive a $5,000 bond. He reminded us that none of the leading Democrat presidential candidates had been in charge of a city, a state, or a business ... and that he did not feel they should have on-the-job training in the White House, and called the democrats "professional spenders." He ended by saying America is a great country not because of government but because of her people.

He did not mention 9/11. He has received criticism from dems about that ... but I feel he should talk about 9/11. It was a defining moment for America and, most definitely, for New York City. Rudy Giuliani led that city through the darkest days it had ever seen, and it happened just a short six years ago. Why should he not be expected to talk about it?

I must admit I was surprised to be so enthused by Rudy. I have admired his leadership at a time of terrorism ... but do not agree with some of his other issues especially his gun control policy. I am not a one-issue voter and realize I will not agree 100% with anyone. Rudy is definitely on the short list of possibilities.

Statement of Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling on the passing of Jo Ann Davis....

Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling today issued the following statement on the passing of Congresswoman Jo Ann Davis.

“I was very saddened to learn this morning that my good friend, Congresswoman Jo Ann Davis had passed away. Jo Ann fought a valiant fight against cancer and held on to her optimism and hope until the very end. The manner in which she handled a very difficult situation was an inspiration to us all.

“I had the privilege of working with Jo Ann during her tenure in the Virginia House of Delegates and during her tenure in the United States Congress. She was a dependable conservative voice on the challenges of our time, but I believe that her greatest contribution was the devoted manner in which she attended to the affairs of her district and the constituents she served. She was a good and decent person.

“My thoughts and prayers are with Jo Ann’s husband Chuck and their sons. I know this will be a difficult time for them. I pray that God will comfort them in their hour of need, and assure them that those we love are never truly gone as long as we keep their memory alive in our hearts.”

When the parade of state delegations rolled around during the "Defending the American Dream" summit, the first state called was Virginia. With the largest group of 350 attendees, it was led by Attorney General Bob McDonnell who was backed by Paul Harris, Juanita Ballinger, Jim Crosby, Mike Meredith, Trixie Averill, Kathy Terry, Jacob Parrish, and others.

Later in the day AG McDonnell addressed the Virginia lunch where he was thanked for his military service to our country and that of his daughter Jeanine who has served with the U.S. Army in Iraq.

Others welcomed and heard from during the Virginia standing-room-only lunch were Presidential candidate Fred Thompson, Congressman Tom Davis, State Senator Mark Obenshain, and Delegate Chris Saxman.

The passing of Congresswoman Jo Ann Davis....

It was with sadness that I received the following notice in my email from RPV Chairman John Hager:

Republican Party of Virginia Chairman John H. Hager issued the following statement on the sad news of the passing of 1st District Congresswoman Jo Ann Davis.

“I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Congresswoman Jo Ann Davis after her long struggle with cancer. Virginia has lost a passionate advocate for better government, and her legacy as a defender of conservative principles will always be remembered. I pray for her family, and mourn with our friends in the 1st District.”

The 1st District has lost a champion. Republicans have lost a friend. Our prayers go to Congresswoman Davis' family and to the 1st District family.

"Defending the American Dream:" Who was there?

This was AFP's first "Defending the American Dream" summit ... and it was a smashing success! They had twice as many people as they expected -- close to 2,000 fiscal conservatives traveled from 35 states around the country to participate in workshops and listen to Republican Presidential candidates. The Mayflower Hotel was packed and the AFP staff worked overtime to accommodate everyone. It was, I am sure, a monumental task that required smoothing out some last-minute glitches but they pulled it off in a grand way ending with a huge elegant buffet Friday night.

Seven Republican Presidential candidates attended. Thought AFP invited the Democrat candidates, none accepted ... perhaps something to do with AFP's goal of lowering taxes and holding the line on spending?

Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney, Fred Thompson, Sam Brownback, Ron Paul, Mike Huckabee, John McCain ... seven candidates which offered a rare opportunity to hear from so many in a venue other than a debate.

Lots of folks attended from the Sixth District: State Senator Mark Obenshain, Delegate Chris Saxman and Delegate Ben Cline. Sixth District Chairman Fred Anderson, State Central Committee members Kathy Terry and Trixie Averill, Virginia College Republican President Jarrett Ray from JMU, Augusta Middle River Magisterial Chairman Barb Tillett, Kim Wiseman and her mom, Kelly Keech, Rockingham Chairman Mike Meredith, VFRW Representative Suzanne Curran, Tara Huffman, David Huffman, and Christy Huffman.

Many other familiar faces were seen: Attorney General Bob McDonnell, Mike Reynold, Jacob Parrish, Fifth District Chairman Jim Rich, Congressman Tom Davis, Paul Harris, Jim Parmalee, Kevin Bolling, Jeb Wilkinson, Tucker Martin, Whitney Duff, State Central members Patsy Drain and Juanita Ballinger, and I know there are more that I'm forgetting.

It was great to see so many of our College Republicans in attendance. I met Samantha, CR State Secretary, who attends Mary Washington but is from Charlottesville. She and I discovered we were both at the Win the War rally in Charlottesville in June to counter Cindy Sheehan.

And I reconnected with Duane Sand from North Dakota. More about him later.

The North Carolina delegation wore pig hats to demonstrate "no more pork." The Texas delegation wore white cowboy hats. Sitting across the aisle from one another, they were a hoot as the "pigs" went up against the "Hook 'em horns."

The Virginia delegation wore "Virginia (heart) is for AFP" stickers. Wisconsin wore cheesehead hats. Georgia waved miniature state flags.

The music was loud and patriotic and rallied the delegates.

Tim Phillips, President of AFP, was losing his voice by Friday night's closing session. I'm sure those folks are ready for a good night's sleep. They can rest knowing they were a success.

"Defending the American Dream:" The candidates

The "Defending the American Dream" summit held by Americans For Prosperity is over ... and what a wonderful experience to hear from so many presidential candidates -- seven of them! --at one event. I had never heard any of them speak in person and, since I have not made up my mind about a candidate, have been listening to the debates and studying their issues.

One event cannot determine a decision but two candidates hit it out of the park: Rudy and Mitt.

One disappointed: Fred.

This does not negate their stands on issues -- my number one issue is national security -- but public speaking does impact people. If someone is passionate about becoming President, I like to see it come through in their remarks ... I like to be rallied and caught up in their dream of heading up the most powerful country in the world.

However ... I want a leader ... and sometimes a leader is not the most articulate person. Time will tell as I learn more about the candidates.

Left Staunton at 9:30 this morning heading to DC for Americans for Prosperity's "Defending the American Dream" Summit. The dreaded traffic was cleared up by the time we got to NOVA and we had smoothe sailing into the Nation's Capitol. On a gorgeous cloudless October day the monuments and buildings were beautiful as temps rose toward 90 degrees -- hot and humid but that could not damper our enthusiasm as we arrived at the Mayflower Hotel.

A quick stop by registration, grabbing name tags and schedules, and off we dashed to the waiting transport to take us to the White House for a briefing in the new press room located in the Old Executive Office Building. I had not been in the White House complex for a few years so it was nice to see it again ... and my friend said it was a dream-come-true for her to be there. Two-hundred Americans for Properity grassroots leaders from across the country enjoyed the briefing.

A fun moment: riding on our transport was a group of home school students from Michigan. As we approached the gate to enter the OEOB, I shook hands with Tim Phillips, President of AFP, and said hello ... and he asked if they could film us for a promotion spot. The home school students and several adults bunched together ... I told them I was a home school mom so I felt right at home ... and we looked at the camera, and shouted, "We're AFP and we're proud to be here!"

After the press room briefing we headed to the Capitol for a 3:00 news conference held with House Republican Leader John Boehner and other top-ranking Congressional leaders. The purpose of the news conference was to call for stronger spending reforms that will help limit wasteful pork-barrell earmarks. Members of Congress participating were Roy Blunt, Adam Putnam, Jeb Hensarling, Jeff Flake, Mike Rogers, and Phil Gingrey.

Back to the Mayflower to change for a Cocktail Recepton with Senators John McCain and Jim DeMint in the Hart Senate Office Building.

I knew it would be a whirlwind of activity ... and tomorrow promises to be even more so. There's a full schedule beginning with breakfast at 7:00 ... an opportunity to hear from the top GOP Presidential candidates and many of the conservative leaders in DC ... lunch with the Virginia delegation headed up by Attorney General Bob McDonnell ... book signings, grassroots seminars ... cocktail reception in the evening followed by the Ronald Reagan dinner.

"Defending the American Dream"

Americans for Properity Foundation's "Defending the American Dream" Summit is taking place at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, DC, today and tomorrow. This is an all-star event with participants coming from 35 states to hear speakers such as:

Leading grassroots experts will conduct seminars to offer tools to help recruit, motivate, and develop even more grassroots leaders to carry on this important fight.

National experts will tell how to more effectively make citizen voices heard on Capitol Hill or in the state legislature, how to recruit additional grassroots activists at the local level, and how to organize local grassroots Summits in each state.

The event will close Friday evening with a Ronald Reagan Dinner offering a tribute to that great conservative leader.

Virginia has the largest state delegation attending with a special lunch tomorrow featuring Attorney General Bob McDonnell and other guests.

I hope to blog from the Summit although it promises to be a whirlwind two days. Townhall.com will have a bloggers gathering and, all in all, it should be an informative, interesting time in DC.

Fred Thompson defends Rush Limbaugh

Fred Thomson has posted a comment on his blog in defense of Rush Limbaugh and his support of our troops:

Congressional Democrats are trying to divert attention from insulting our military leader in Iraq and pandering to the loony left by attacking Rush Limbaugh. He is one of the strongest supporters of our troops, yet Democrats claim he is not being strong enough. I wonder who General Petraeus and his troops think is most supportive?

Rush Limbaugh slammed by clueless Wesley Clark

This goes from comical to ridiculous. Now Wesley Clark has clammored on-board the radical liberal train to slam Rush Limbaugh by requesting Congress remove Rush's radio show from Armed Forces Radio.

That is laughable because it was the military men themselves who requested Rush's show be added to their lineup. Does Clark know anything?

The answer is obviously "no" because he said Rush called soldiers who were against the war "phonies." That is not accurate in any way, shape, or form ... but it's the lie being pushed by the lib crowd. So what is in this for Clark? Why would he join the radical left in clammoring for Rush's removal from radio?

Dems are not about truth ... they are about POWER ... and they use intimidation to gain it

Democrats go from bad to worse in their tired old tirades slamming President Bush, Republicans, conservatives ... do they know how ridiculous they sound? Obviously not ... because the lib blogs are trotting out the waiting-in-the-wings screechy talking points against the President and his veto of a "children's program" ... how could he possibly be so evil as to be against children? It falls into the "poisoning the water and killing the children" theme they have used the past 20 years.

"Let's intimidate them ... let's slam them," they seem to say, "and they will shut up. They're Republicans; they back down from confrontation and controversy. They can be intimiated into silence."

Don't be so sure....

Clear Channel defends Rush Limbaugh to Harry Reid

Scott's Morning Brew has the letter from Mark Mays, CEO of Clear Channel. Harry Reid is the laughing stock of America ... how absurd to go before his colleagues and read a letter (presumably from MoveOn.org) questioning Rush Limbaugh's patriotism and calling on Clear Channel Communications to condemn their # 1 radio personality.

On Rush's show yesterday, angry military families were calling to condemn Harry Reid and the democrats, and to thank Rush, because they were absolutely clear of Rush's high esteem of our military ... his verbal support on-air, his financial support through military charities, his in-person support by visiting with the troops in Afghanistan....

Rush is beloved by the troops; in fact, they asked to have his Rush Limbaugh Radio Show added to the military radio lineup, and soldiers and Marines have personally thanked him on-air, presented him with American flags that have flown on missions in Iraq and Afghanistan, and much more. He stands up for them and has never wavered in that support.

Does Harry Reid do any research before throwing out false accusations ... or is he at the beck-and-call of MoveOn.org?

Staunton: Move May elections to November

Staunton's May elections for City Council generate a dismally low turnout at the polls. A proposal to move them to November sounds logical and is not only a money-saving proposition but also a way to engage more of the electorate.

Today's Waynesboro News Virginian editorial says:

I met Mary while attending a family wedding in Colorado this past summer. It was one of those events where they have name plates and mix everyone around so you are not sitting next to someone you know. My seat was next to Mary who was a cousin to the groom.

Mary was a hoot! A little older than me, she was fun with a biting, dry sense of humor as we talked about one thing or another ... and then we stumbled on politics. Neither of us had met before; neither knew the background of the other.

And yet, somehow, two political junkies had been seated beside one another.

I cannot remember how the subject came about but she was a "D" and I was an "R" ... and we laughed about that. She had worked for her Congressman there in Colorado; I told her I was deeply involved in the grassroots end of politics.

I asked if she knew my Congressman, Bob Goodlatte, but she wasn't familiar with him ... and then I said, "George Allen was my senator."

That was it! She knew all about George Allen. That started talk about the polarization of politics, and I told her I blogged ... she had heard of blogging but wasn't into it herself. She is still an active member of the local democrats.

The conversation dwindled away when the band began playing and the dancing began and the wine flowed under a full moon on a warm Colorado summer night ... but it had been fun to meet someone from the "other side" ... and I marveled at the coincidence of two people -- probably the only two out of that group of 200 -- who were that deeply involved in politics ... and how we just happened to be seated beside one another for a brief moment in time....

NORTHWEST CRACKDOWN ON FAKE VETERANS IN “OPERATION STOLEN VALOR”
Phony Vets Scam more than $1.4 Million and Damage Image of Honorable Veterans

U.S. Attorney Jeffrey C. Sullivan today announced some of the results of “Operation Stolen Valor,” a year long effort to investigate and prosecute those who lie about their military service for financial gain or other reasons. Sullivan and Doug Carver, Special Agent in Charge of the Veteran’s Affairs Office of Inspector General detailed eight prosecutions in the Veteran’s Affairs Northwest Region in 2007.

“As a Vietnam Veteran, and the father of a decorated Army officer currently serving, I feel very keenly the damage done by Jesse Macbeth and these other fakes,” said Jeff Sullivan, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Washington. “Macbeth’s lies fueled hostility to our servicemen in Iraq and here at home. Those who falsely claim medals for heroism, cheapen the recognition of our true war heroes.”

“The ‘phony war hero phenomenon’ plagues the American landscape and tarnishes the service of thousands of veterans who have served honorably. It strangles VA resources from providing critical care and benefits to deserving veterans returning from war,” said Douglas J. Carver, Special Agent in Charge of the VA Office of Inspector General, Western Field Office. “It all boils downs to this: these phonies submit claims to the VA for compensation and medical benefits they are not entitled to, and it takes away valuable resources from those who are entitled.”

In a dozen cases under investigation in the northwest, the fraud totals more than $1.4 million. Eight of the cases have been publicly filed and are in various stages of being adjudicated:

*Jesse Macbeth, 23, Tacoma, Washington, sentenced today in connection with his fraudulent claims of military service. Macbeth sought medical benefits claiming to suffer from PTSD related to service in Iraq and Afghanistan, in fact, Macbeth was discharged from the Army about a month after he joined. Macbeth never traveled outside the U.S. with the Army. Macbeth duped reporters, claiming to be a decorated Army Ranger who had witnessed war crimes.

*Reggie Buddle, 60, Puyallup, Washington, sentenced July 30, 2007, for Unlawful Wearing of United States Military Medals and Decorations. Buddle posed as a decorated Marine Corps Chaplin presiding over weddings, funerals and baptisms. Buddle was sentenced to 500 hours of community service and two years of probation.

*Larry Lewis Porter, 52, Seattle, Washington, sentenced April 19, 2007, for Mail Fraud in connection with a scheme to fraudulently obtain disability benefits from Veterans Affairs. Porter was sentenced to 37 months in prison. Porter claimed he suffered PTSD from experiences in the Navy, however investigation revealed the events were fabricated. Loss Amount: $134,000

*Roy J. Scott, 71, of Port Angeles, Washington pleaded guilty August 31, 2007, to Use of an Altered Military Discharge Certificate to obtain VA Compensation and Medical Benefits, and Unlawful Wearing of United States Military Medals and Decorations. Scott claimed he had served in the Marine Corps in Korea, that he was wounded in combat in Korea, and that he had been awarded the Korea Defense Medal, Korea Star Medal, and a Purple Heart (due to alleged gun shot wounds sustained during combat in Korea). Scott claimed to be honorably discharged, when in fact, he never earned those medals, never served in Korea or any foreign country and was Court-Martialed out of the Marine Corps. Loss Amount: $21,960.

*Merrick K. Hersey, 64, of Vancouver, Washington, Hersey was indicted August 1, 2007, for Use and Possession of Forged or Altered Military Discharge Certificate and False Statements. Hersey is a fugitive and is being sought by law enforcement. Hersey applied for benefits claiming he served in 1967-68, was awarded two Purple Hearts (for wounds sustained in active combat) and the Bronze Star (awarded for heroism). Hersey claimed he suffered from PTSD and sought benefits. In fact, Hersey never served in the Marine Corps at all. Loss Amount: $2,688.

*Michael D. Heit, 58, of Harrington, Washington, pleaded guilty yesterday (September 20, 2007) in U.S. District Court in Spokane, Washington to Use and Possession of a Forged or Altered Military Discharge Certificate and False Claims of Military Medals. Heit claimed he was a Vietnam vet who was held as a prisoner of war. He claimed to have been awarded three Purple Heart medals and the Silver Star. None of that is true. Loss Amount: $3,500

*Elvin J. Swisher, 70, of Idaho, is charged with Wearing Unauthorized Military Medals, False Statements, and Theft of Government Funds. Swisher falsely claimed he was wounded in Korea and that he had been awarded the Silver Star, Purple Heart and other medals for valor. Loss Amount: $95,000.

*Carlos Riosvalle, 83, of Portland, Oregon, was sentenced April 9, 2007, in Multnomah County for multiple counts of Theft by Deception. Riosvalle collected benefits claiming to have been “shot down while a pilot in World War II.” In fact Riosvalle never served in the armed forces. Loss Amount: $22,818.

These cases were all investigated by the Veterans Affairs Office of Inspector General VA-OIG. Hillary Clinton didn't serve in the military, by the way, Senator Reid. She just voted against General Petraeus. Barack Obama did not serve in the military, Senator Reid, and he didn't even show up to vote in support of Petraeus. John Edwards didn't serve, and after voting to send our troops to war, he has undermined them ever since.

It is unconscionable for an esteemed United States senator to launch an all-out assault on a private citizen, which is a lie from front to back, in order to cover your own actions and words, which have been the true demoralization of the US military -- and if anybody owes the military of this country an apology, Senator Reid, it is you. It is Jack Murtha. It is Dick Durbin. It is any and all who have joined your effort to secure defeat of the United States and the United States military in not only Iraq, but the war on terror.

Sir, have you no decency left? Have you no shame whatsoever?

Justice Thomas on Rush Limbaugh today....

What I have heard so far is riveting and inspiring ... poor background does not automatically mean failure. A rich kid can be a failure just as surely as a poor kid can be a success in America. Tonight: Your presence needed at Staunton City Council discussion

Staunton City Council elections are held in May. A proposal by the Electoral Board has asked the city to consider moving elections to November for a couple of reasons ... more voter involvement and financial savings.

Three public forums will be held for Council to receive input from voters. The first is tonight, October 1, at 7:00 p.m. in the Lee High School cafeteria. Lee High School is located on N. Coalter Street on Staunton's north side.

A second forum is scheduled for Monday, October 22, in the Shelburne Middle School cafeteria. A third forum's date is yet to be set.

GOP to trounce dems?

I like the way Jerry at From On High thinks. He says:

With this kind of opposition ... the Republican Party may end up trouncing the Democrats next year.

He then references a Washington Times article that says the Republicans are having a fundraising bonanza due to the MoveOn.org "General Petraeus" ad in the New York Times. Check it out.

Gilmore the choice of conservative leaders?

He's from a blue collar background and understands the everyday man on the street. His dad was a butcher; his mom was a church secretary. He had goals and drive and determination ... made his way through UVA Law School, became Attorney General and then Governor of Virginia ... and Jim Gilmore has not slowed down since.

An unabashed conservative, Governor Gilmore has never backed away from standing up for the unborn or drawing the line on taxes. He is being urged by conservative leaders throughout the Commonwealth to run for the U.S. Senate seat that will be vacated by John Warner.

A Washington Times article made that clear:

"We need Jim Gilmore's steady, conservative leadership in the U.S. Senate," said David Keene, chairman of the American Conservative Union, and Paul Weyrich, chief executive officer of Free Congress Foundation, a District-based conservative think tank.

It may be a contest between Jim Gilmore and Rep. Tom Davis for the Republican nomination. Announcements of any candidacies will be after the November 6 election.

NY Times in legal hot water after Petraeus ad

The New York Times has 15 days to respond to the FEC after a complaint was filed against it by the American Conservative Union in the wake of the MoveOn.org "General Petraeus or General Betray Us" ad.

The New York Post editorialized:

In theory, the commission could launch a massive investigation to determine whether the Times willfully flaunted the law, or - as it now claims - someone in the ad department made a convenient "mistake."

If evidence of the former pops up, the Times could face fines amounting to several times the discount it gave MoveOn.

George Will writes:

Bob Bauer, a Democratic lawyer specializing in laws regulating political speech, notes —not approvingly—that the Times supposedly has a policy of rejecting ads involving "personal attack" speech. But the Times accepted MoveOn.org's ad accusing a soldier of betraying his country. According to the Times' public editor, a Times official said the ad was "a comment on a public official's management of his office."

Hillary voted AGAINST Gen. Petraeus and FOR MoveOn.org

Just don't want anyone to forget that Hillary voted AGAINST Gen. David Petraeus -- she as a United States senator voted against the leader of our military action in Iraq while we are at war -- and she voted FOR MoveOn.org which is a radical left-wing group that backs anti-war protests.

Is Hillary Rodham Clinton someone we want leading our country when world-wide terrorism is at an all-time high and radical Muslims have declared jihad against America?
