Staunton Councilman Dickie Bell seeking reelection

Dickie Bell, 61, the conservative conscience of Staunton City Council, has announced he will seek reelection for his fourth term.

Often standing alone against a more liberal group of colleagues, Councilman Bell was instrumental in pursuing the recently-passed zoning ordinances to prevent adult businesses from locating near family-oriented areas such as schools or playgrounds. Working with Staunton Police Chief Jim Williams and citizens in the community, he was able to persuade a skeptical council to unanimously pass the ordinances for the protection of the city.

Councilman Bell, who is a special education teacher and coach at Riverheads High School, said he has sometimes been "a voice for some people who don't think they have a voice."

Bob Campbell and Rusty Ashby have both announced their intentions to run.

City Council elections will be held Tuesday, May 6.
