Kurt Michael, Chairman of the Augusta County GOP from 2003-2008, was unanimously voted onto the Virginia State Weekday Religious Education Association Board as a Trustee. The meeting, held at WRE state headquarters in Lexington on Saturday, continued the work Dr. Michael began in 2005 when he worked to save Staunton's WRE.
In his role as Trustee, he will be responsible for making sure the State organization runs correctly, following the Bylaws and Articles that are its guidelines.
Staunton Councilwoman Andrea Oakes, President of Staunton's WRE, reminded other Board members of Kurt's role in saving WRE in Staunton in 2005 and how he brought in attorney Gil Davis who represented WRE pro bono, how he helped bring in the Rutherford Institute which was also willing to represent WRE pro bono, how he organized the original meeting to decide what course of action to take to save WRE, and how he brought in 500 people to two meetings that eventually saved the organization from being scraped by the city. He also organized petitions and signs and other aspects of the battle.
He worked hand-in-hand with the late Jack Hinton, former President of Staunton's WRE program, and is carrying on his duties out of respect for him.
Dr. Michael also worked with Councilwoman Oakes in fighting the adult business that moved into Staunton in 2007, helping line up supporters to successfully urge City Council and Augusta's Board of Supervisors to pass ordinances restricting adult businesses from locating in family-oriented areas.
Dr. Michael also organized the 2006 Marriage Amendment supporters, working with 40 SWAC area churches in the successful effort.
