"Mudcat" Saunders uses profanity to disparage Northern Virginians

In what was intended to be a conference call for the news media, Democratic strategist David “Mudcat” Saunders was unaware that reporters were on the line when he uttered several sentences that pitted Northern Virginians against other, more rural areas of the state. According the Washington Post, Saunders was under the impression that the conversation was a private, more informal strategy session among partisans, although the call was aimed at the press and organized by the Democratic Party of Virginia.

“From what I've seen up in Northern Virginia, they don't give a damn if people talk s*** about us,” Saunders said. Upon realizing that there was media present on the call, he attempted to amend and repair his remarks by adding that there are “more rednecks on Route 1 in Alexandria than the sixth district of Virginia.”

Northern Virginia is what is known as a “donor region,” meaning the region generally pays more in taxes that it receives in return from the Commonwealth.

“Look, Bob McDonnell has roots in Fairfax and Virginia Beach,” said Republican Party of Virginia Chairman Pat Mullins. “Creigh Deeds is from Bath County. From what I know about both men, they both care about Virginia. I think the people of Northern Virginia care about the rest of the state as well, despite what Mudcat said.”

“Mudcat should explain what he meant by his offensive remarks and apologize to the people of Northern Virginia,” Mullins said. “This is what turns people off about politics – people trying to divide us along different lines – regions of the state being one of them.”
