Shenandoah Valley students, teachers safe after Haiti earthquake

Blue Ridge Community College (BRCC) sits in a bucolic landscape alongside I-81 halfway between Staunton and Harrisonburg in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley.

When news came of the devastating Haiti earthquake earlier this week, there was immediate concern for two BRCC students and two instructors who were working there and for 24 hours no one knew their fate. An email was finally received notifying the school that all were safe:
An American volunteer who worked closely with members of the college’s Students in Free Enterprise team e-mailed her organization to report that members of the group have “safe accommodations and food, and are not harmed,” college spokeswoman Bridget Baylor said.

The SIFE team was staying in a convent guesthouse in Riviera Froide, about 20 miles southwest of Port-au-Prince, where the earthquake crushed thousands of structures, from schools and shacks to the National Palace and the U.N. peacekeeping headquarters.
Those from BRCC who were SIFE team members in Haiti are team advisor Rebecca Evans, veterinary technician Gail Foley, and students Mike Aronoff, 21, of Vienna and Megan Samples, 19, of Harrisonburg.
