Every year Virginia gives a sales tax break the first weekend in August for consumers who are purchasing back-to-school items. Today through Sunday, August 5-7, consumers will not have to pay sales tax on eligible items:
August 5-7, 2011: School Supplies and ClothingSome interesting items are included on the eligible list but conspicuously absent are computers, something needed by older students.
During this three-day period, purchases of certain school supplies, clothing and footwear will be exempt from the Virginia sales tax. Each eligible school supply item must be priced at $20 or less, and each eligible article of clothing and footwear must be priced at $100 or less. For details, visit our School Supplies and Clothing Holiday page.
However, if you're looking for your back-to-school baby clothing and baby blankets, you're in luck. Or if you need to buy some back-to-school wedding apparel or perhaps lingerie, you're in luck. But don't expect to get a tax break on safety goggles or other protective items, and physical education sports items like shin guards are not included.
It's a curious list....
