Afton Mountain Vineyards and a toast to David Mefford

Afton Mountain Vineyards is one of Virginia's pioneer farm wineries, with the oldest of the vines dating back to the 1970s, planted by a Richmond-area chemist named David Mefford who realized the soil in that part of Virginia was perfect for vineyards. He and his family planted the first vines that are still used today. Sadly, his dream was cut short when he became ill with cancer and passed away which resulted in the family selling the vineyard. Today Afton Mountain Vineyards produce Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon as well as Gew├╝rztraminer and Sangiovese. A toast to Mr Mefford and his dream that made him one of the pioneers of the Virginia wine industry!

A beautiful Sunday afternoon, a glass of chardonnay, and a breathtaking view of the Blue Ridge Mountains ... it doesn't get much better.
