The
Shenandoah National Park website warns visitors of alerts concerning the Neighbor Mountain wildfire at the northern end, and derecho storm damage that extends the length of the Park:
-
Fire Closures
Open as of noon, July 6: Appalachian Trail from Beahms Gap to
Elkwallow & Byrd's Nest #4. The following trails remain closed due
to fire activity: Jeremys Run, Neighbor Mountain, Knob Mountain and Knob
Mountain Cutoff.
-
Storm Damage
Recent storms have caused many downed trees, especially in the
southern portion of the park. Crews are working to clear trails and fire
roads. Use caution when hiking and riding horseback, especially near
and south of Loft Mountain.
A friend talked with park personnel who said it could take up to a year to clear up storm debris. Be aware of limbs overhead and trees that may be leaning but not yet on the ground.
