A bill to ban smoking in restaurants and other private places has been unanimously defeated in committee. Restaurants and other businesses may continue to make their own rules for their own establishments. The overbearing hand of government has been held back for a while longer.
For the second year in a row Governor Tim Kaine had sought to have a smoking ban put in place after previously saying he did not think the government had the right to interfere with private business.
On October 27, 2007, it was reported in the Washington Post that "Kaine said again Thursday that he does not support legislation that would ban smoking in private businesses, saying that would be a troubling expansion of government regulation. 'I don't think the police power of the state should go that far,' he told reporters."
Kaine's smoking ban was defeated for his very own reasoning. The police power of the state shouldn't go that far.

Staunton Councilman Dickie Bell seeking reelection
Dickie Bell, 61, the conservative conscience of Staunton City Council, has announced he will seek reelection for his fourth term.
Often standing alone against a more liberal group of colleagues, Councilman Bell was instrumental in pursuing the recently-passed zoning ordinances to prevent adult businesses from locating near family-oriented areas such as schools or playgrounds. Working with Staunton Police Chief Jim Williams and citizens in the community, he was able to persuade a skeptical council to unanimously pass the ordinances for the protection of the city.
Councilman Bell, who is a special education teacher and coach at Riverheads High School, said he has sometimes been "a voice for some people who don't think they have a voice."
Bob Campbell and Rusty Ashby have both announced their intentions to run.
City Council elections will be held Tuesday, May 6.

Mitt Romney ... a Class Act
Mitt Romney's speech at CPAC today showing his love of family and country had Reaganesque overtones ... he wanted the unity of the GOP and the country as he stated his concern for the safety of the nation in this time of war.He was a gentleman ... he was the uniter ... he was impressive. He was that person I heard speak at the "Defending the American Dream" AFP convention in Washington, DC, in September. At that time I said he looked presidential ... today he acted presidential.
A class act. Maybe in 2012....
Mitt at CPAC: "I'm stepping aside...."
12:45 p.m. ... Mitt Romney addressing CPAC....
Laura Ingraham introduced her friend Mitt Romney as the conservatives' conservative ... standing in front of a bank of American flags, he received a long, standing ovation of cheers and applause and sign-waving. He thanked everyone for caring enough about the conservative cause for America ...
Today we are a nation at war, he said, and he agrees with John McCain on whatever it take to win the waron terror. Agrees with McCain on eliminating al Qaida and staying strong to protect this country ...
In this time of war, he cannot let his campaign be a hinderance to the safety of this country ... if this was only about him he would go on but it has never been about him ... he entered this race because he loves America ... and because of that love of America, at a time of war, for our country, our Party ...
... he announced he is suspending his run for the presidency, stepping aside, for the good of America.
What a class act.
Thank you, Mitt Romney, for giving us a choice. Who knows what may happen in four years....

Righty blogs on BNN ... a conservative alcove in the blogosphere
There's a conservative alcove in the blogosphere called Righty Blogs/ Virginia, sponsored by conservative mega-site RedState, offering a wider variety of right-of-center blogs than are available on Blog Net News/ Virginia.
One of my favorite reads that is only available on Righty Blogs is Win the War by Josh Levy, a UVa law student who organized the Win the War rally in Charlottesville last June when anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan was in town.
Another favorite is The Conservative V.O.I.C.E., the blog for VCAP -- the Virginia Conservative Action PAC that supports conservative candidates and issues in Virginia.
Others are 84 Rules, Kinshasa On The Potomac, the evangelical outpost, The HILL Chronicles, and many more.
Sometimes it is nice to be in the middle of like-minded folks. That is when I click over to Righty Blogs, couch back, and enjoy the comfort of being in the "right" room.

Thunderstorms in February?
A much lesser version of the extremely destructive weather that left over 50 people dead in four southern states after 68 tornados touched down Tuesday night has descended on the Shenandoah Valley tonight. Thunderstorms in February are not unheard of but are unusual. With a high temperature yesterday of 70 and upper 60s today, the short respite is being swept out tonight with high winds, downpours, thunder, and a lightning display to illuminate the mountains. While the thermometer is still sitting at 52 degrees at midnight, it is expected to drop into the 30s by morning and plummet into the single digits this weekend. Sunday's forecast is calling for a wintry mix of precipitation.
It's winter in the Valley....
Berkeley: Congressman Campbell (CA) acts to rescind federal $$ in USMC case
Congressman John Campbell (CA-48) has been lining up co-sponsors for his "Semper Fi Act." The “Semper Fi Act” rescinds all of the funding contained in the Omnibus Appropriations Act for the City of Berkeley, CA, and transfers those funds to the Marines. This is in response to Berkeley ’s City Council recent vote to tell the Marines to close their recruiting station in the city. With this vote, they told the Marines recruiting office is not welcome in our city, and if recruiters choose to stay, they do so as uninvited and unwelcome intruder.During the meeting, the City Council also voted to give protest group Code Pink a parking space in front of the recruiting office once a week for six months and a free sound permit for protesting once a week. According to the City Council agenda, they "encourage all people to avoid cooperation with the Marine Corps recruiting station, and applaud residents and organizations such as Code Pink, that may volunteer to impede, passively or actively, by nonviolent means, the work of any military recruiting office located in the City of Berkeley ."
Co-sponsors lined up so far are: Duncan Hunter (CA);John Carter (TX); Joe Wilson (SC); Doug Lamborn (CO); Michael Burgess (TX); John Kline (MN); Ted Poe (TX); Dana Rohrabacher (CA); Mike Rogers (MI); Paul Broun (GA); Darrell Issa (CA); Todd Tiahrt (KS); Jim Saxton (NJ); Dan Burton (IN); Mary Fallin (OK); Thaddeus McCotter (MI); Louis Gohmert (TX); Joe Pitts (PA); Wally Herger (CA) Tom Feeney (FL); Patrick McHenry (NC); Trent Franks (AZ).

ODBA welcomes The Contemporary Conservative!
The Old Dominion Blog Alliance has added another member to its fold. Jody Wilcox at The Contemporary Conservative started blogging when he lived in Colorado, long before he reached Virginia. He lives in Chesterfield and has declared himself a candidate for Vice Chair of Special Projects on the GOP Committee. (He will probably run into my parents at those meetings.) Read his post with his letter telling about himself -- quite interesting. We've been emailing back and forth for a number of months so I am happy to say, "Welcome to the ODBA, Jody!"
Ronald Reagan ... born February 6, 1911
"Let us be sure that those who come after will say of us in our time, that in our time we did everything that could be done. We finished the race; we kept them free; we kept the faith." --Ronald Reagan, 40th President of the United States (1911-2004)When Germany invaded Euorpe, it was America that brought the people freedom. When Communists built a wall, it was America that brought the people freedom. When Slobodan Milosevic and Saddam Hussein tortured and butchered thousands of their own people, it was America that brought the people freedom.
Ronald Reagan clearly understood freedom and the role America plays in preserving it throughout the world.
When America preserves the freedom of others, it preserves its own freedom.
Freedom is the spirit of America, and it is this spirit that Ronald Reagan communicated so well.
Thank you, President Reagan, for keeping the torch burning. You will be remembered as one of the greatest leaders of all time.
7th District GOP Chair endorses Jim Gilmore for Senate
Republican Leader Linwood Cobb today endorsed Jim Gilmore for the U.S. Senate. A Virginia native and small business entrepreneur, Mr. Cobb is the Republican Party's chairman for the 7th Congressional District and a former Chairman of the Republican Party of Henrico County."This Virginia son's ability to mobilize and longtime activism are exactly the type of characteristics that are helping us shape a winning campaign organization," said Gilmore regarding Cobb's endorsement.
Mr. Cobb served on the Governor's Commission on National and Community Service, the State Board of Election where he was elected as its Chairman and the State Board of Community Colleges. "As Governor of Virginia, Jim Gilmore helped create nearly 300,000 new jobs through his pro-business policies which helped attract new companies and encouraged existing business to grow and expand in the Commonwealth," stated Cobb.
"Like Jim Gilmore, I too believe that high taxes are too great a burden on the nation's economy and on working families and that we must control government spending and grow the economy so we can create more jobs, hope and opportunity."

Super Tuesday analysis
The SWAC political junkies attended an Augusta County Republican Committee meeting last night and afterwards talked politics while watching the Super Tuesday returns coming in from throughout the nation.
There is something energizing about discussing politics with others who are equally into it ... analyzing the numbers and discussing scenarios of what could happen and defending one's candidate. It was a friendly, jovial group of grassroots volunteers who have worked together through thick and thin throughout the years.
While many have commented on last night's results, I especially liked this wrap-up by Chris Green at Spank That Donkey. Tuesday's votes proved that Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee together could have stopped John McCain, and Chris proves that out in his post.
Now we go into the Virginia primary next Tuesday....

Killer tornadoes in the South ... over 40 killed
I turned on Fox News this morning to catch up on Super Tuesday updates and was met with a picture of destruction in the wake of 68 tornadoes that touched down overnight in four southern states. As of now over forty people have reportedly been killed with the toll expected to rise.

Look what came out of West Va ... McCainabee!
More news is coming out of West Virginia where John McCain and Mike Huckabee pooled resources to defeat the clear leader who was Mitt Romney. More and more are saying, "A vote for Huckabee is a vote for McCain." Now comes the new terminology ... McCainabee. It is going to be an interesting Super Tuesday....
West Virginia ... all is revealed in Huckabee win
Mike Huckabee has won the 18 delegates in West Virginia's Super Tuesday presidential primary. Huckabee was polling at 16% behind Mitt Romney who was polling at 42%, so the question begs to be asked: What happened?
Huckabee and John McCain pooled resouces. Word is McCain's delegates were directed to back Huckabee to prevent a sure Romney win. And now we know why Huckabee is still in the race and, apparently, cutting deals in the back room with McCain. This is a very interesting development....

Berkeley pro-troops rally needs you
There has been more fallout in Berkeley, California, after the City Council passed a resolution that called our troops "unwelcome intruders" and called upon residents to not cooperate with any military recruiting center in the city.Anti-military protestors, feeling emboldened by the city's blessing, chained themselves in front of the Marine Recruiting Center and prevented people from entering the facility. The police stood by and did nothing - telling people that they were "trying to remain neutral."
See the video for yourself - HERE.
Photograph from San Francisco Chronicle.
Thousands of you have responded to our call to action and registered your protests with the city via emails, phone calls and petitions.
Now, as Michelle Malkin reports, city council members are indicating that they may rescind the resolution at their next City Council meeting that takes place this Tuesday, February 12, 2008 at 7:00 PM.
Move America Forward has already announced our plans for a giant rally outside the City Council chambers at the February 12th Council Meeting. We need people there by 5:00 PM for the council meeting start time of 7:00 PM.
However, since the news media will likely be camped out throughout the day, we will have staff arriving in the morning, and are asking as many supporters as possible to join us for at least part of the day - so there are bodies there for the cameras. Our first Move America Forward staff members will arrive at 5:00 AM (yes, in the morning) - this is when the early morning news programs begin airing in San Francisco.
The City Council Chambers are located at 2134 Martin Luther King, Jr. Way. It's right by Martin Luther King, Jr. Park. Here is a map of the location.

Good news indeed ... former George W. Bush strategist Karl Rove has joined Fox News Channel as a contributor. This guy is brilliant in political strategy which is why the libs detested him so much and were always targeting him with hyped-up controversies while at the White House.
It's 70 degrees in the Valley in February....
It is a beautiful day in the Shenandoah Valley as the thermometer now sits at 70 degrees. With clouds moving in for rain tonight or tomorrow (when thunderstorms are a possibility!), the sun feels good when it comes out. Even with a stiff wind, it is warm and comfortable.Didn't we just have an ice storm five days ago? Not to get too comfy ... because winter will return. It's February in Virginia ... and this is not unusual ... so it's nice to be able to get outdoors and enjoy!

Don't you want an Albemarle Pippin?
"They have no apple to compare with our [Albemarle] Pippin.”--Thomas Jefferson
In the midst of politics there's nothing like planting to get your mind off the madness. Monticello's Center for Historic Plants is offering three varieties of apple trees for sale including the Albemarle Pippin with all funds going to the Thomas Jefferson Foundation to help preserve and educate about this national treasure.
Albemarle Pippin - Also known as Newtown Pippin or Yellow Newtown. Thomas Jefferson wrote of this apple from France, “They have no apple to compare with our Newtown Pippin.” And the same can still be said today. Not an attractive apple: medium-size; squatty; dull, greenish-yellow skin. But its yellow flesh is rich, crisp, and fine-flavored. Ripens October through November and keeps well into the winter. Full sugar is said to develop in January. Good for pies, cooking, or eating out of hand. Susceptible to scab, but resistant to collar rot. Originated in New York in the early 1700’s.

Romney is leadership needed for America -- WSJ Commentary
A Wall Street Journal commentary by Vin Weber, A Call to Conservative Action, says Mitt Romney is the leader for America with his vision for a stronger America:
Mitt Romney for President
It is a vision that calls for empowering the American people through conservative change in Washington. From Dearborn to Des Moines to Jacksonville, Mr. Romney has articulated the conservative vision and the conservative policies needed to make America strong again.Mitt Romney has a proven track record as a successful businessman in the private sector. He is a family man. He will keep America safe by strengthening our military. He is the right man for America.
We are a leader in the world, but that leadership came with great sacrifice. It was won by those of the Greatest Generation who left their children a great nation.
Now, it is our turn to take the mantle of leadership and ask, what kind of nation will we leave our children and grandchildren? We can leave future generations a greater nation, but only if we are willing to take the action necessary today to overcome a new generation of challenges.

Bob Goodlatte: "Holding the line on spending"
The nation continues to face serious budgetary challenges and it is time we take control of spending instead of letting it control the Congress. Government programs have continued to expand while the amount of money available to spend has not kept pace. It is common sense to American families that they cannot spend more than they have - yet far too frequently, this fundamental principle has been lost on a Congress that is too busy spending to pay attention to the bottom line.
Next week the President will send his proposed budget for fiscal year 2009 to the Congress. Congress will then begin to structure the budget using the President’s recommendations as a starting point. It is in these critical first stages of the process when decisions are made as to how much total money should be spent by the federal government. Unfortunately, most of the attention by many Congress-watchers is on the last stages of the appropriations process when spending bills are finalized. However, by that time the decision is no longer how much money should be spent, but rather where it will be spent and by whom.
We need to focus the debate back on where it matters most – the budget process at the beginning of the year where the decision is made regarding total federal spending for the year. It is the budget at the beginning of the year that sets the stage for how fiscally responsible government spending will be. Each year I vote for the tightest budget offered but each year the Congress fails to adopt it and agrees to spend too much.
For these reasons, I introduced bipartisan legislation that would amend the United States Constitution to force Congress to rein in spending by balancing the federal budget. Forty-nine out of fifty state governments, including Virginia, have a balanced budget requirement and it is long past time that the federal government does as well. I am pleased that nearly 160 Members of the House have signed onto my legislation, which ensures that the money our citizens work so hard to earn is not squandered on wasteful spending and programs.
My legislation would amend the Constitution to require that total spending for any fiscal year not exceed total receipts, and requires the President to propose budgets to Congress that are balanced each year.
Congress has a clear choice in the coming months. We can control spending, paving the way for a return to surpluses and ultimately paying down the national debt, or we can allow out of control spending to lead us further down the road of chronic deficits and in doing so leave our children and grandchildren saddled with debt that is not their own. Even in these challenging times it is important for government to be fiscally responsible. Families, businesses and state and local governments have all had to tighten their belts. It’s time the federal government did the same.

Bob Goodlatte: "The Digital Television Transition"
In a little over a year, television broadcasters will stop broadcasting their signal in analog format and will broadcast only in digital format. This transition from analog to digital, known as the Digital TV (DTV) transition, will take place on February 17, 2009 and will bring new opportunities and innovative services to all consumers. The potential for more channels, better picture clarity, and greater consumer interaction are what make digital television such an exciting technology.
Digital television represents the most significant development in television technology since the advent of color television. DTV can provide movie-quality pictures and sound far superior to traditional analog television. DTV offers sharper and wider pictures. Even consumers with analog televisions connected to a converter box or cable or satellite service will receive better service than they did before the transition.
In order to receive and view digital television service, consumers must have a digital television set equipped with a digital tuner capable of receiving the digital signal that is provided either over-the-air or via cable or satellite television systems. Analog-only televisions will no longer be able to receive the new broadcast signals. Those televisions must be connected to cable or satellite systems or be equipped with a digital-to-analog converter box. The cost of these boxes is expected to be $50 to $70. Converter boxes will not only enable all analog televisions to function, they should also provide better reception and additional features such as closed captioning and parental controls.
While I believe that the digital transition must occur, I also believe that Congress should take steps to help ease the burden on those American households that do not have digital television sets when the transition is complete. For that reason, Congress established a digital-to-analog converter box program that will partially subsidize consumer purchases of converter boxes. Specifically, the Congress passed legislation in 2005 which directs the Department of Commerce to provide up to two forty-dollar coupons to households who need to purchase the digital-to-analog converter box.
An important benefit of the switch to all-digital broadcasting is that it will free up parts of the valuable analog spectrum for public safety communications, such as police, fire departments and rescue squads. Additionally, some of the analog spectrum will be auctioned off for more exciting uses like wireless high speed Internet services, which will provide more options for consumers in rural areas. In addition, a portion of the revenue raised in the spectrum auction will be returned to the U.S. Treasury, thereby contributing to federal deficit reduction.

Before the Super Bowl ... there was the Declaration of Independence
Patriotic? Dang right. Stirring? More than I realized. Proud to be an American? Absolutely!Fox spent their last five minutes of the Super Bowl pregame show on Sunday -- using precious, expensive prime time minutes -- with a reciting of the Declaration of Independence to honor Americans who have died for this country over the past 200 years.
Those reciting included reenactors representing Ben Franklin and Thomas Jefferson ... NFL-related people including Peyton Manning ... service members ... everyday Americans ...
... and perhaps the most touching was the widow of NFL star Pat Tillman.
For those too young to remember, Pat Tillman joined the Army Rangers after 9/11 to defend the country he loved, leaving behind his NFL career with the Arizona Cardinals and a $3.5 million contract. Tragically killed at the age of 27 during the war in Afghanistan, he was a Patriot ... he was a hero.
Thank you, Fox Sports. We need to be reminded of who we are. Could you run that on a daily basis?
Thank you American heroes, wounded warriors, fallen warrios ... may God bless America.
Snowmobiling in Yellowstone....
A SWAC friend has been in Yellowstone National Park the past week with her husband snowmobiling for their birthdays. She sent photos this morning but am having trouble accessing them ... will post when I pull them up.She knows how much I enjoy winter so she wrote:
I have been thinking of you in this beautiful winter wonderland. It has snowed every day; snowflakes falling on you makes for great riding. We are having a blast! Yesterday we did Yellowstone; today and tomorrow riding trails out of the park. ... I do believe we will have had our fill of snow when we leave....I have visited Yellowstone twice during the summer but would love to see it with all that snow. Wishing them safe travels as they play ... and then begin their journey back to the east coast.
Happy birthday, you two!

Mitt Romney ... the humanity side the press ignores
NewsMax reports:
In contrast to the glowing coverage of [John] McCain and his Straight Talk Express, the media have largely ignored a telling clue to Romney’s character. As first fully reported by Newsmax, when told in July 1996 that the 14-year-old daughter of one of his partners at Bain Capital had been missing in New York for three days, Romney closed down the firm. He asked its 30 partners and employees to fly to New York to try to find her. This is the first I have read that story ... and Mitt Romney has been on my radar since September. It's deja vu ... 2000 all over when the press also gave John McCain a pass when he ran against George W. Bush.
“I don’t care how long it takes, we’re going to find her,” Romney told the girl’s father Robert Gay.
As it turned out, the girl had gone to a rave party and taken ecstasy. As a result of a massive campaign orchestrated by Romney, he was able to locate and rescue the girl when she was within a day of dying from the effects of an overdose.

The Coke Super Bowl commercial for the political junkies featuring Bill Frist and James Carville

Another possible candidate for the Virginia U.S. Senate seat being sought by former Virginia Governor Jim Gilmore and Delegate Bob Marshall has been calling around to GOP leadership throughout the state.

Romney wins Maine Caucus with 52% ... McCain trails with 21%
Mitt Romney won the Maine Republican Caucus held this weekend in a 2-to-1 vote over John McCain:
Mitt Romney coasted to a win in presidential preference voting by Maine Republicans on Saturday, claiming his third victory in a caucus state and fourth overall.
The former Massachusetts governor had 52 percent of the vote with 68 percent of the towns holding caucuses reporting. John McCain trailed with 21 percent, Ron Paul was third with 19 percent, and Mike Huckabee had 6 percent. Undecided votes accounted for 2 percent.
The youth factor and Mitt Romney
A young conservative friend of my son's, here for Super Bowl afternoon, always engages in political conversation when he's over. This former Giuliani supporter was talking with me today about the presidential race -- I have had no conversation with him since Giuliani dropped out -- and he is going for Mitt Romney. A number of young people I know are now in the Romney camp ... and you can bet they will vote on February 12.
While attending the Americans For Prosperity "American Dream" conference in D.C. in September, we had the opportunity to hear from seven presidential candidates including Mitt Romney. What struck me at the time was the number of young people who were for him, identified by the Romney lapel stickers they were wearing. The CRs and YRs I interact with back that up. It will be interesting to see what the Romney youth vote ends up being.

Today ... Super Bowl XLII
It's Super Bowl Sunday and, though we may not have a horse in this race, we will be enjoying the festivities with everyone else. A collaborative effort has gone into cooking and baking snacks and goodies ... the grill will be fired up shortly for BBQ ribs and brauts ... and friends are coming over to join us as we gather to watch the Super Bowl ... and the commercials.Hope all are taking a respite from politics to sit back and enjoy an American tradition as the Patriots and Giants duke it out for the title of best in the nation today at 6:00 p.m. on Fox.
Enjoy the game!
"Republicans should be clamoring for ... Mitt Romney by a landslide" -- Ann Coulter
“Turn on any cable news show right now, and you will see Democratic pundits attacking Romney, calling him a ‘flip-flopper,’ and heaping praise on McCain and Huckleberry—almost as if they were reading some sort of ‘talking points.’
Doesn’t that raise the tiniest suspicions in any of you? Are you too busy boning up on Consumer Reports’ reviews of microwave ovens to spend one day thinking about who should be the next leader of the free world? Are you familiar with our ‘no exchange/no return’ policy on presidential candidates? Voting for McCain because he was a POW a quarter-century ago or Huckabee because he was a Baptist preacher is like buying a new car because you like the color.
The candidate Republicans should be clamoring for is the one liberals are feverishly denouncing. That is Mitt Romney by a landslide.” —Ann Coulter

It's Groundhog Day ... again
It's February 2 ... Groundhog Day ... and an annual tradition at our home is to watch the 1993 movie "Groundhog Day" with Bill Murray. It's comical and fun ... but it is also reflective as Bill Murray plays a sullen, arrogant, sarcastic weather forecaster who has to make the annual trek to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, for the obligatory report on the groundhog's prediction for spring.
It is fun to watch as a pessamist gradually evolves into an optimist who moves beyond thinking of himself and realizes the good of people when he learns to care for others. It's a comedy with a moral that we can watch with the family.
The insanity continues....
Berkeley, CA, is well remembered as an anti-war community in the 1960s. Now, 40 years later, it has proven its anti-war reputation is well deserved. One wonders how many of those "Code Pink" anti-war protesters at the Marine recruiting station are leftovers from the hippie years. After Berkeley City Council passed their anti-military provisions last week, Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC) proposed legislation to end all earmarks and federal funding to the Berkeley area. In a press release on Thursday he said:
“This is a slap in the face to all brave service men and women and their families. The First Amendment gives the City of Berkeley the right to be idiotic, but from now on they should do it with their own money. If the city can’t show respect for the Marines that have fought, bled and died for their freedom, Berkeley should not be receiving special taxpayer funded handouts. I am currently drafting legislation to ensure that American taxpayers aren’t forced to pay for this insult by rescinding all of the earmarks for Berkeley in the Omnibus Appropriations bill, and to transfer the funds to the Marine Corps.” That totals $2.1 million that would be saved if not sent to Berkeley ... money that would go to the Marine Corps. The insanity continued as three Code Pink anti-war protesters padlocked themselves to the Marine recruiting station door Friday for over seven hours, blocking the door for anyone who wanted to enter. Arrested by police, they defiantly announced they would continue to protest. Mary Ann Thomas, 64, said they had made a great statement by blocking the door. Let's see ... Ms. Thomas would have been in her 20s in the 1960s at the height of the anti-Vietnam era....
There were those who wanted to go inside the recruitment station but were shouted at and turned away by the protesters blocking the door:
Heated words were exchanged whenever people tried to enter or leave the office, but the protest was peaceful. The city of Berkeley has heard from conservatives nationwide protesting their treatment of the Marines. City Council removed their contact information from their website because they had received so many phone calls. If you contact anyone on this list please be polite.
"You guys are just cannon fodder!" the chained protesters shouted at three teenage boys who walked past the office and said they wanted to go inside. "They want to train you to kill babies!" The teenagers turned around and left.
At one point, UC Berkeley student Kyrolos El Giheny walked up to the front door and tried to go inside to talk to Lund about a possible Marine career. He was unable to get past the chained protesters.
"They told me, 'No business as usual today,' " El Giheny said. "It's kind of nutty. It's really an infringement on my rights."

Maine GOP caucus today

No delegates will be awarded through the caucus gatherings, which began yesterday and continue today and tomorrow. The Maine Republican Party said voters will participate in caucuses held in 80 percent of municipalities, up from 54 percent in 2006.

The White House in Review - Week of Jan. 28 - Feb. 1, 2008
Monday, January 28, 2008 President Bush delivered his seventh State of the Union address to a joint session of Congress and to his fellow citizens. His address advocated his philosophy of trusting Americans, empowering them to make good and wise decisions, especially when it comes to keeping more of their hard-earned money, rather than sending it to Washington.
"Seven years have passed since I first stood before you at this rostrum. In that time, our country has been tested in ways none of us could have imagined. We faced hard decisions about peace and war, rising competition in the world economy, and the health and welfare of our citizens. These issues call for vigorous debate, and I think it's fair to say we've answered the call. Yet history will record that amid our differences, we acted with purpose. And together, we showed the world the power and resilience of American self-government."

President Bush visited the Jericho Program and meet with program graduates. Jericho is a grantee of the Prisoner Re-entry Initiative (PRI), which the President proposed in 2004 as a signature program of the Faith-Based and Community Initiative (FBCI). The program is run by Episcopal Community Services of Maryland and serves non-violent adult male offenders who have been released from prison within the last six months.
After, the President made a statement on the FBCI. Today marks the seventh anniversary of the FBCI. Over the past seven years, the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives and the Agency Centers it oversees have worked to strengthen both faith-based and non-religious service organizations and to extend their work in partnership with government.
In the afternoon, the President signed the Executive Order Protecting American Taxpayers from Government Spending on Wasteful Earmarks. This will effectively end the common practice of concealing earmarks in so-called report language instead of placing them in the actual text of the bill. This means earmarks will be subject to votes, which will better expose them to the light of day and help constrain excessive and unjustified spending. Later, he met with Joint Chiefs and Combatant Commanders.
"Last night in my State of the Union, I highlighted the important work being done by faith-based organizations. This morning I was pleased to visit one of these inspiring groups, the Episcopal Community Services of Maryland, right here in Baltimore. I cannot thank you enough for the chance to take a tour."

President Bush visited Robinson Helicopter Company and made a statement on trade and the economy. For the sake of America's economy and national security, Congress should approve the vital free trade agreement with Colombia. Both houses of the Colombian legislature have expressed overwhelming support for the trade agreement with the United States. Now it is Congress' turn to support a key ally and expand opportunities in both our nations by approving this important agreement.
"I hope you're confident about our economy. I am. We've got some short-term issues to deal with. Fourth quarter growth slowed to .6 percent. In other words, there are signs that our economy are slowing. There's some uncertainty in the economy. But in the long run you've got to be confident about your economy. Inflation is down, interest rates are low, productivity is high. Our economy is flexible, it is resilient. We've been through problems before. As a matter of fact, we've been through problems before since I was your President. We've had a recession, corporate scandals, an attack on the United States of America; we've had major national disasters, and every time we've come through strong. And that what's going to happen this time, too."

Later, the President attended a Nevada Victory luncheon. In the evening, he attended a Colorado Victory and Bob Schaffer for Senate reception.
"We will prevail. We will prevail in this ideological struggle because liberty is powerful. Liberty is hopeful. The enemy we face can only convince people to join their cause is when they find hopelessness. And so our strategy is threefold: one, protect the homeland; two, stay on the offense against these folks; and three, provide an alternative -- a hopeful alternative to despair and doubt and hopelessness."

And I'm looking forward to working with them. I like the spirit I found up in the halls of Congress. "SWAC bloggers edit and purge ODBA" ... my response
After first trying two weeks ago to get the ODBA bloggers to boycott Bill Bolling's Bloggers Day (which they did not go for), Shaun Kenney chose to go public earlier this week with a dust-up that started with two Alpha males squabbling in the ODBA -- he and Spank That Donkey. I was surprised, to say the least, at what Shaun wrote:
I read the follow-up stories in the blogosphere and watched to see who would jump on the blame bandwagon ... and who would stop to consider there are two sides to every story.
There were plenty of those who willingly believed without asking about our side of the issue. Hysterics have been played out publicly....
The SWAC bloggers had nothing to do with what occurred in the ODBA this week. The whole episode began with Shaun Kenney, DJ McGuire, and Chris. For reasons he felt were justified, the list administrator (who is not a SWAC blogger) removed Shaun from the ODBA message board, not from the ODBA. Kat removed herself from the board.
SWAC bloggers number eight if you include the now-dormant General Grievous' Dog ... with the others being In-Politically Correct, Journal of the Civilized Man, RightsideVA, SixtyFour81.com, Spank That Donkey, SWAC Girl, and Yankee Philip.
Of those eight, only three are ODBA members: Spank That Donkey, In-Politically Correct, and SWAC Girl. Of those three, only one was involved in the dust-up with Shaun.
How did this become the fault of the others, the majority of whom are not even members of the ODBA?
Shaun's statement that the SWAC bloggers (plural) were "editing" and "purging" the ODBA is ludicrous ... and he knows it. His accusation occurred just two weeks after he was the guest speaker at the SWAC-GOP Breakfast in Staunton.
My reason to be involved in politics is not for silly shenanigans like this. Defending this type of frivilousness is a waste of time and, yet, if I do not respond many will perceive that Shaun was correct in his statement.
It is time to move forward and not be sidetracked from working for our conservative candidates and the principles we believe in. I invite Shaun to do the same.
And so it begins, as the SWAC bloggers edit and purge the ODBA.That statement is a lie, and I talked with Shaun on the telephone Monday night for an hour about it, at which time he admitted it was wrong and said it "needed to be fixed." It is now Friday afternoon and it has not been "fixed." Is this Shaun's way of letting the lie fester and spread?

"The conservative activism and successful efforts waged by Jim in the campaign to defeat the Transportation Tax Referendum proposed by Mark Warner in 2002 exemplify the type of organization and leadership we are putting together to claim victory for Virginia in November," said Gilmore regarding Bowden's endorsement.
A former Army infantry officer and Harvard and Columbia graduate, Mr. Bowden, is also a professional in the defense industry and a former University professor.
"Governor Jim Gilmore will earn Virginia's pride as her U.S. Senator. Already proven are his trust, courage and consistency, and no one in America possesses his background and understanding of Homeland Security. His long public service to the Commonwealth is the epitome of 'promises made, promises kept.'"
"Jim Gilmore is the Conservative that defense, fiscal and social Conservatives trust. He is the man who respects the votes of Virginians as the true honor it is - and the duty it becomes to serve all Virginians."

HB 3202 (HRTA) ... not good for Tidewater
Jim Bowden lives in Tidewater and is fighting HB 3202 ... but he needs help. He posted today on Deo Vindice and Bacon's Rebellion:
My new state senator, John Miller (D-1SD), saw his bill to kill the HRTA die in committee. He had modified his own bill to end the unelected, unaccountable, unseparated powers Regional Government to exclude only The Peninsula. Still, it went down 10-4.Now, the only chance to kill the HRTA this session is the bill my delegate, Tom Gear (R-91HD), submitted.Check out his site for the list of committee members to contact.
HB 829 redlines, repeals, the HRTA and its projects which don't solve the transportation congestion here from the monster HB3202. The rest of HB3202 stands for the rest of the Commonwealth to suffer. The People of Tidewater still stand against this wrong plan, expansion of unnecessary government, and wrong taxes over 2:1.Yet, the bill isn't even on the docket in the House Transportation Committee.
Winter in the Valley ... midday and the ice is getting worse
The Subaru is covered with branches as the river birch, weighed down by ice, droops on top of it.
Icy woods....
Icy deck....
Palmer Kitty knows how to spend a cold winter day.
It is past noon and the ice, which was supposed to be melting by now, is getting worse. Icicles on the railings and tree limbs are growing even longer ... trees are leaning down to the ground ... we still have freezing rain and sleet as the temperature remains right at 32 degrees. The satellite went out hours ago ... the power has surged but is still on for now. The woodstove is cranked and we are snug.
It's winter in the Valley....

The anonymous VCU commenter.... Updated
Update: Further checking of the stats found that this particular anonymous commenter has been in my site at least 250 times.
The anonymous comment was left this morning, while I was online, under my post, "Are the conservatives willing to cut a deal for the good of the Party?" Anonymous Commenter said:
This Anonymous Commenter appears to have missed the entire point of blogs.
First, he/she does not have to read my blog ... so please do not come back.
Second, it is my domain where I can post my thoughts, opinions, and any information I care to publicly put out there for someone to read. I can publish reader comments or ignore them -- it's my decision. And I do not publish comments with profanity in them.
If Anonymous Commenter wants to do the same, start up a blog.
Otherwise, I hope VCU (the alma mater of "that donkey whacko") is teaching more to this particular student than just how to leave drive-by comments with nasty language in them. And I would certainly hope than the staff there was above such a thing so I am not even including them in the possibility of being so small-minded.
Meanwhile, "that donkey whacko" is my friend, a fellow SWAC blogger, a contributing member of our community, a graduate of VCU, a Marine veteran who has served his country, and someone who must be intimidating to Anonymous Commenter for him/her to have such a knee-jerk reaction. Time for him/her to find another way to express his/her frustrations with life and him/herself.

Icy winter weather in the Valley....
It is c-o-l-d outside this morning ... a damp chill that penetrates clothing as the icy rain continues. I ventured out for the first time around 7:30 but did not make it past the porch because of the heavy rain. Tree limbs could be heard groaning under the weight of the ice ... icicles are growing longer on railings, vehicles, picnic table, bird feeder, and anything else outside. The weather mix is predicted to move out by noon. Let's hope the tree limbs hold up that long.
