Ferocious thunderstorms rolled through the Shenandoah Valley last night with high winds, hail, and heavy rain. After the violent storms passed, a gentle rain settled in for the night with its comforting pitty-pat outside the open windows....
Country music legend Eddie Arnold died yesterday at the age of 89. I had the opportunity to see him in concert years ago when I was in my 20s at an outdoor concert in Stratford, CT. My mom, sisters, and I were traveling throughout New England so were able to take in some of the arts events that were available in that beautiful part of our country. Stratford's under-a-big-tent outdoor series was extremely popular ... my mother loved Eddie Arnold's music ... so we had an enjoyable evening as he sang "Make the World Go Away" and other hits. On a late-summer evening it was magical....
Blogger "hburgnews.com," run by Brent Finnegan, 29, got front page coverage in this week's eightyone magazine, page 11, found on grocery store racks throughout the area....
Finally got to the newly-opened Kohl's in Waynesboro's Target shopping center just off I-64. They opened a month or so ago. It's nice to have one so close even if it is a smaller version of what is available in Richmond and Harrisonburg....
Political guru Larry Sabato is featured in the free Charlottesville House & Home magazine, also available at local grocery stores....
Shakespeare is alive and well at Staunton's Blackfriars Theater. Check out the upcoming events....
Buffalo Herb Farm did not reopen for business this spring as in the previous 15+ years. The two owners have retired so, while the residence is still in Raphine, the business portion is closed with a sign for the public to know the farm is no longer in business. They will be missed....
The Farmers Market in Staunton is up and going again for the season. Open on Saturday mornings from 7 am until Noon, they offer a variety of fresh vegetables, baked good, canned goods, fresh flowers, plants, and much more. Check them out in the Wharf parking lot in downtown Staunton (adjacent to the train station)....
The Green Valley Bookfair reopens this Saturday, May 10, through May 26 with thousands of new books at 60-90% off retail prices. I spend hours perusing the aisles in Green Valley's two buildings ... political books, regional history, cook books ... it's amazing what is available at a huge savings. They are open daily 9-7....
There is so much going on around the Valley. Come on up and visit!
