The Augusta County Board of Supervisors followed through and hired someone for a newly-created $85,000-a-year economic director position. Questions remains as to the necessity of such a job especially during the current difficult economic times.
Even as 18 jobs were cut from the Augusta County Government roster, supervisors decided to create a new job to cover responsibilities that had been handled previously by a staff member. The job description? Bring business to Augusta County.
It would have been nice if they had been able to keep the 18 jobs that were already here.
Dennis Burnett, former deputy director of Shenandoah Valley Airport at Weyers Cave, has been hired. According to the Waynesboro News Virginian, Mr. Burnett is currently the director of Colgan Air, a job I would think he will be giving up when he takes over the current position on September 1.
Are the taxpayers of Augusta County happy with a new $85,000 job at a time when they are cinching their belts and dealing with job layoffs and loss of homes?
