Raw late autumn day in Shenandoah Valley

The temperature stood at 44 degrees this morning as a cold rain that had begun overnight continued to fall. The forecast said that was our high for the day ... temps would drop with wind and heavy rain.

It is a raw autumn afternoon.

The woodstove is glowing, helping to ward off the chill. Outside the ground is covered in fallen leaves ... the sky is gray ... stark, bare trees again make up the "winter woods" as I look out at the ridge behind the house. Wood is stacked on the porch in preparation for the cold months to come even though the calendar says there are six weeks left before the first day of winter.

Meanwhile, Thanksgiving is two weeks away and the house is alive with activity anticipating a visit from my Texas sister and her family. The three sisters will be together for the holiday as the Middle Sister returns home to Virginia ... a celebration of family.

It's autumn in the Shenandoah Valley....
