Local interstates to raise speed limit to 70 mph?

Sections of two major interstates that intersect in Augusta County, I-64 and I-81, are on the first round of Virginia roadways being considered to raise the speed limit to 70 mph.

The 2010 General Assembly approved those increases for roadways that met certain criteria including low to moderate congestion, guard rails and rumble strips, and consultation with state police and local law enforcement. Currently the Virginia Department of Transportation is studying 741 miles of interstate that could see speed changes effective July 1, 2010.

The speed limit has been 70 mph in North Carolina for years. Thirty-two other states raised their speed limits after the 1995 repeal of a federal government law limiting speed limits.
