The Frontier Culture Museum in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley is a local and state treasure. Signs help visitors find their way around the 300-acre outdoor living museum.

Today was orientation day for newly appointed members of the Board of Trustees at the Frontier Culture Museum in Staunton. Governor Bob McDonnell's announcement of new names brought us all together to learn a little more about the background of the museum from Executive Director John Avoli, former mayor of Staunton, and take in a golf cart tour of the property.
The Frontier Culture Museum offers a hands-on teaching experience for all students, young and old alike. As a 16-year home school veteran, my children and other home educated students often took the opportunity to tour the outdoor museum. On July 4th of this year my parents walked the paths to the homesteads for the first time.
Serving on the board will be a good experience....

Very neat! I spent 3 years volunteering there during middle/high school. Many many good memories were made there. Haven't been there in years though...need to make a point to visit sometime when I'm home.

Thanks, Juliana. You and many other home educated students have volunteered throughout the years to help FCMV.
Even today there's a wheelchair ramp at the school house near the American farm that was built by a local home school (PEACH) student as his Eagle Scout project. Others are helping with architectural digs. FCMV is a great preservation of the past for the future to see.

After years of using the museum as a teaching tool, I'm excited and honored to be asked to help continue the preservation of the site by being part of the Board of Trustees.
This museum is hands-on and perfect for home educators as well as all students, young and old alike.
I look forward to October 21st when the Virginia home schoolers come to Staunton!
