Eighteen Hanger supporters showed up at the Sixth District Convention Saturday to challenge the credentials committee to allow them to participate in the process. They had not signed up at the mass meeting and were not on the certified list of delegates. A number of them were seasoned political players who should have known the process.
That was the very reason Augusta County's chairman Kurt Michael and 20 others went to court Friday to be sure the integrity of the certified delegate list was not compromised. The judge countered that no damage had been done so he could not issue an injunction. However, he put Fred Anderson on notice that he expected him to do the right thing and follow the Party Plan and 6th District Bylaws to seat only the delegates on that list.
A phone call was put in to Ben Cline who was chairing the convention. Ben said he had already been notified of the court case but that he was going to be sure only the names on the list were allowed. I point-blank asked if anyone not on that list would be allowed and my understanding was the answer was no.
Apparently Emmett Hanger, Larry Roller, Jean Shrewsbury, and others brought 18 more people who were not previously certified to participate. Though the point that they had not signed up was argued to the credentials committee, their decision was to issue provisional ballots.
As one participant said, "Why have rules? They just ignore them and do whatever they want!"
