Missing Staunton man's body found in Shenandoah National Park

Sadly, the story of Earl Funk's disappearance in the Shenandoah National Park almost two weeks ago does not have a happy ending like the children who disappeared in the George Washington National Forest and were found the next day.

A man who had grown up knowing the mountains, Mr. Funk was reported missing on Monday, September 24, after going out with a friend to hunt ginseng on Cedar Mountain. When he missed the appointed time to meet up with the friend, family members began a search which was joined in following days by U.S. Park Service personnel, Albermarle deputies, search-and-rescue teams, search dogs, volunteers, and others who combed the rough terrain in hopes of finding the 49-year-old Staunton man. His body was found late Saturday afternoon in the Brown Gap area of Albemarle County.

No other details were immediately available.
