The Shenandoah Valley is closed ... Snow Day!

It seems as if almost everything is closed down today in the Shenandoah Valley after a weekend snow storm left varying amounts of snow and high winds caused wind chills to drop dramatically. An overnight low of 17 degrees will pale compared with predicted single digit lows expected tonight. High wind warnings are in effect as blizzard-like conditions continue today with blowing snow and drifts.

No newspaper delivery. Local courts didn't open. Public schools are closed as are private and Christian schools. Local colleges -- James Madison University, Mary Baldwin College, Blue Ridge Community College -- did not open their doors.

Even my husband's employer is shut down until noon today, a rare event, but an indication of the rough shape of roadways. Snow drifts, freezing surfaces, and traffic accidents have caused difficult traveling conditions.

WHSV TV-3's First Alert forecast has much of the Valley under a winter storm warning through 2 pm for up to 6" of snow ... right now it's sunny, windy, and cold outside -- 21 degrees -- but no sight of snow. Very cold tonight with single digit temperatures.

We cleared the deck Sunday only to have an addition 4-5" of snow overnight making our overall total around 7" for this storm. Of course, with the high winds blowing snow in open spaces, we have snow piled on bushes and against the house in one area ... while limbs have been blown bare of snow in other places.

Snow day ... get outside and play!
