I think it's great they took a stand for freedom, and it's a nice story for Independence day, BUT I'm not sure why a pastor is reading about it in church, or why we even sing this in churches (other than a passing mention of God in the last stanza).
Look, there's nothing wrong with being loyal to one's country, but I think the flag and country has become elevated almost to the level of the cross in American churches and I'm sorry, but that's idolatry.
