VA & Maine decline to join 48 others in Westboro church lawsuit

As a Virginian, this is surprising and disappointing. In the past, I have written in support of the Marine father who initiated this lawsuit.

They are the most vile and insidious group of people in this nation, but I do have to say much like the smoking ban it's one of those things I'm completely torn apart on. Part of me wants them punished and stopped from the vile things they do, the other side wants to stand up for the liberties and rights even when we don't agree with people.

It may be a situation where the freedom of speech needs a touch of definition, as in, maybe there is a proper time and place, and maybe sacred events such as funerals could rightfully be excluded from such rights out of general decency.

I agree with you. Those people are vile yet represent the "freedom of speech" we all cherish.

I am surprised that Ken Cuccinelli didn't jump into this with both feet especially since 48 other states joined in on the lawsuit. It is disappointing that a state as conservative as Virginia held back and, yet, Massachusetts, California, and other liberal states joined in.
