Staunton's own Statler Brothers made the Top 10 best patriotic songs posted by AOL Radio. In honor of the 4th of July 2010, here they are:
10. Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American) by Toby Keith
"Cause [he'll] put a boot in your ass/It's the American way." Don't mess with Toby Keith! This emotional track was written shortly after Keith's father passed away in 2001, and was inspired by the Sept. 11 attacks.
9. More Than a Name on a Wall by The Statler Brothers
Originally a gospel act performing at churches, the Statler Brothers wrote this sad tale of a mother losing her son in 1989. Although set years after the Vietnam War's end, the mother remembers the good times she shared with her son, and her own personal war in coping with loss.
8. If You're Reading This [Live] by Tim McGraw
7. Riding With Private Malone by David Ball
6. A Country Boy Can Survive by Hank Williams Jr.
5. Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning) by Alan Jackson
4. Ragged Old Flag by Johnny Cash
3. American Soldier by Toby Keith
2. Stars and Stripes Forever by Boston Pops Orchestra
1. God Bless the USA by Lee Greenwood
A song that embodies the American spirit, 'God Bless The USA' was played for former President Ronald Reagan at the 1984 Republican National Convention.
