A rural tradition: Lawn parties and fireman parades

Congressman Bob Goodlatte and Del. Chris Saxman in Bridgewater parade Friday, Churchville parade Saturday

We in the Valley are in the midst of a rural tradition: lawn parties and fireman parades in small towns throughout the area from June through August.

What is a "lawn party"? It is a carnival, actually, with rides and games for the kids as well as food booths usually sponsored by local civic and church groups as their fundraising activities to raise money for the year.

Each community looks forward to the annual tradition including the fireman's parade which is sponsored by the local fire department in each locality. The local fire trucks are in the parade as well as citizen groups and politicians who represent that area.

Friday night the Bridgewater parade took place with Congressman Bob Goodlatte and his wife, Maryellen, and Del. Chris Saxman participating.

Saturday afternoon the Churchville parade will take place at 5:00 p.m. with Congressman Goodlatte and Del. Saxman participating once again. The Republican float will have Pastures District Republicans riding and others will be walking with our representatives handing out lapel stickers and other goodies to parade watchers. Afterwards, the carnival will run late into the night which is always a thrill for kids and adults alike.

Lawn parties and fireman parades ... a Valley tradition.
