Rain in the Valley ... and other thoughts on a Saturday night....

We could hear thunder in the distance late this afternoon as we worked in the yard and, sure enough, the sky darkened and the wind kicked up ... but no rain....

Later the rains came ... gentle steady rain without the thunder or wind ... and the temperature cooled down so rocking on the porch was enjoyable. As I sat in the backyard under the maple tree, the dense leaves acted as a natural umbrella as I talked on the phone and watched the steady rainfall....

We need rain. It is dry. Most thunderstorms have bypassed us and the garden is parched. SWAC Husband does not baby his garden ... it's survival of the fittest ... so he rarely waters from the well. As he dug out a stump yesterday, he noticed the ground was dry....

The deer are back from last year, grazing in the lower backyard near the woods. I sat outside and watched for a long while this evening before dark....

Smoke from the North Carolina wildfires was much less noticeable today with no smell of burning wood in the air. There is still a haze over the mountains but part of that is the summer haze....

Hull's Drive-In Theater in Lexington is popular with folks in the Valley. When is the last time you went to a drive-in movie theater? At $5 per person (children under 11 are free) for a double feature, it is a bargain that many teens and families take advantage of. Tonight's showing included Prince Caspian so a number of the home school alumni home from college and some parents headed out to catch the show....

Pick Your Own Cherries ... I noticed that Spring Valley Orchard on Afton was advertising in the Waynesboro News Virginian for folks to pick their own cherries. Info about operating hours and directions are available on their website.

We're going to couch in for the evening with Hallmark Channel. There is a movie coming on, Crossroads: A Story of Forgiveness, based on true events, that we want to watch....

It's summer in the Valley....
