Alpacas look similar to miniaturized llamas and are popular in the Shenandoah Valley, with alpaca farms throughout the area. On the way to the Green Valley Book Fair we saw three chocolate brown alpacas including the one pictured, and SWAC Niece almost swooned. She thought he/she was adorable. They were cute!
A few years back the home schoolers went on a field trip to an alpaca farm in Augusta County and it was extremely interesting to talk with the owners about the 20+ in their herd. I cannot remember all they told us but the smaller size makes them easier to handle and they acted like pets, extremely comfortable around people and especially children.
Products made from their fiber, which is used much like wool, was available for purchase in the form of sweaters, caps, mittens, scarves, and other items.
It was another experience at "Camp Mitchell" for SWAC Niece.
