RICHMOND
–Governor Bob
McDonnell issued the following statement today regarding the passing of
Senior Justice Harry Lee Carrico, former Chief Justice of the Supreme
Court of Virginia. The Governor has ordered that the Virginia flag be
flown at half-staff on all local, state, and
federal buildings and grounds in Virginia until his burial.
“It is with
great sadness that we learned of the passing of Senior Justice Harry
Lee Carrico this morning. Justice Carrico lived a life of public
service. Born during World
War I, his service, including that as Chief Justice, on Virginia’s
Supreme Court spanned five decades – the longest tenure of any justice
on Virginia’s highest judicial body. When he stepped down after 42 years
at the age of 86, it was reported that he continued
to wake up at 4:15 a.m., bike six miles, and make it in to the office
before 7:00 am, where he continued to serve as a senior justice. This
incredible dedication, and an energy and vigor for public service are
attributes that all Virginians should strive to
emulate. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Lynn, and his
loved ones in this difficult time.”
