'The mountains were calling' ... Blue Ridge day

A beautiful day led us to the mountains where we found temperatures in the mid-60s with alternating sunshine and clouds. This view of the Shenandoah Valley is from the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Bicyclists were out in force.

I love the outdoors but this picnic table overgrown with grass and weeds would not be a tempting spot to enjoy a leisurely lunch.

The trail beckoned....

We found this tenacious wild rose growing out of a rock ...

... and all kinds of wildflowers.

Hard to believe this was the site of a tragic shooting in 2010.

Hmm. Where's the view?

A freshly-mowed section of the Appalachian Trail.

This must be the "leaves of three, let them be" tree.

The Humpback Rocks picnic area is closed for the summer for a repaving and reconstruction project. The gate was closed so visitors parked alongside the Parkway and walked in, probably to adjoining hiking trails.
