Staunton resident Greg Balsley dies in drowning accident at Outer Banks

The tragic news began making the rounds Wednesday night that popular Staunton resident Greg Balsley, 49, had drowned in the Atlantic Ocean while vacationing at the Outer Banks.

Greg was the son of Grammy-award winning Statler Brothers' baritone singer Phil Balsley. The Statlers, loved by the community, never left Staunton even after they gained fame, and they raised their families here. A 1982 graduate of Buffalo Gap High School who went on to attend Mary Washington College and Bridgewater College, Greg was a long-time realtor with locally-owned Better Homes & Gardens Real Estate III.

As the news of his passing spread, his Facebook page became a tribute for his numerous friends and family members with messages of condolence and remembrances of Greg who was known for his ever-present smile, his good-naturedness, and his willingness to help those in the community.

His Facebook page was full of family photos and snow pictures of Staunton and photos of the surrounding mountains and rivers. He often posted photos of food -- the maple donuts from the Highland Maple Festival, restaurant dishes, and more. Once when I posted a Facebook status that I was meeting a friend in Staunton for lunch, he checked in to find out what we had ordered and if we had liked it. He must have been looking for something new to try!

He's going to be missed. There's a quiet solemness around town ... it seems to be on everyone's mind.  He is survived by his wife, Dania Robinson-Balsley, three sons, one daughter, two grandchildren, and his parents Phil and Wilma Balsley. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends at this sad time.
