"God's coloring book"

Red buds are blooming throughout Virginia.
White lilac outside the window.
Spiraea.

Colorful butterflies landed on the lilacs.

Shades of yellow on the landscape.

We met at Texas Steakhouse in Staunton, two friends hugging in the parking lot before going inside to eat lunch. She had just driven from eastern Tennessee on her way back to the Shenandoah Valley from the Southern Republican Leadership Conference in New Orleans so we had made plans to meet and catch up over lunch.

What struck me was the awe in her voice as she talked about her drive, the beauty all around in the spring of the year driving through America as many flowering shrubs, trees, flowers were all around.

As she talked about driving in Alabama, she spoke of the red buds in full bloom in shades of pink and purple/lavender, of some yellow flowering bush that she did not recognize, and of a short burgandy ground cover ... splashes of color in every direction that made her exclaim, "It was God's coloring book!"

The description stuck with me as I looked around my own yard at blooms of purples, whites, yellows, pinks ... and I smiled at the wonder of God's coloring book right here at home.
