North River Recreation Area: Low-water streams and rivers in heat of August

Rivers and streams are at extremely low levels in the North River Recreation Area of the George Washington National Forest which is usual for mid-summer.

The North River appears dry in areas but water runs beneath the rocks while stagnant pools can be found here and there.

Shiflett Place Plantations is located near Elkhorn Lake.
The sign reads, "100 acres of old farm fields were planted indifferent types of pines 1929-1932 on this area. Future samtimber trees are being pruned to produce better lumber and poorer, crowded trees are being sold for pulpwood."

Hiking trails are everywhere, and horses are welcome.

One mile beyond North River Campground is the North River Picnic Area on the banks of the river and at the base of a dam. Picnic tables and facilities are available. It's a secluded spot in the National Forest that is not kept up as much as other areas.
