Shenandoah County GOP Dinner ... Congressman Bob Goodlatte

Congressman Bob Goodlatte addressed the Shenandoah County Republicans and guests Friday night from the Yellow Barn in Mt. Jackson. Seated at the table were Lt. Gov. and Mrs. Bill Bolling.

Driving Miss Trixie

Playing off the "Driving Miss Daisy" movie, the title of this blog came to mind as I drove I-81 from Staunton to Shenandoah Friday evening with Trixie Averill riding shotgun as we headed to the Shenandoah County GOP dinner in Mt. Jackson.

Trixie is running for Chairman of the 6th Congressional District and has been traveling the District to ask folks to attend the convention on May 22 in Lynchburg to vote for her. Friday night was no exception as she mingled with the crowd, saying hello to familiar faces ... introducing herself to new folks ... asking all to sign up to be delegates to the convention.

She was introduced during dinner, and Congressman Bob Goodlatte endorsed her candidacy during his remarks. Indeed, an email was sent by the Congressman Friday night to Augusta County Republicans asking that they turn out for Tuesday's mass meeting for Trixie.

We both enjoyed dinner and, while driving in the dark down I-81 on the way home, we briefly discussed dinner and speakers and Republican politics ... and then conversation turned to our families and children and, for Trixie, grandchildren.

Our families truly are the wind beneath our wings as we go about our political endeavors, working for the principles we believe in, the tenets of the Virginia Republican Creed, and putting time and energy into electing principled candidates to carry those beliefs.

As I dropped her off in Staunton, she headed down I-81 toward Roanoke an hour away and I turned my vehicle toward western Augusta County for the 10-minute drive home. Saturday night Trixie would do it all over again at the Roanoke Reagan dinner, reaching out to ask for votes and encourage Republicans to come out and vote for her, a conservative, hard-working grassroots leader.

Governor George Allen will appear live on Fox Business Network's "Cavuto" today at 6:00 pm ET. Governor Allen will be live with Neil - who is broadcasting from the Newseum in Washington, D.C. - to discuss healthcare.

Obama snubs another U.S. ally

This is very troubling. Barack Obama, who represents the United States of America, walked out on a key ally who was visiting the White House. Fox News reported:
For a head of government to visit the White House and not pose for photographers is rare. For a key ally to be left to his own devices while the President withdraws to have dinner in private was, until this week, unheard of. Yet that is how Benjamin Netanyahu was treated by President Obama on Tuesday night, according to Israeli reports on a trip viewed in Jerusalem as a humiliation.

After failing to extract a written promise of concessions on settlements, Obama walked out of his meeting with Netanyahu but invited him to stay at the White House, consult with advisers and “let me know if there is anything new”, a U.S. congressman, who spoke to the Prime Minister, said.
Not only was he snubbed, but the fear of tapped phone lines caused Mr. Netanyahu to leave the White House for communication purposes, according to the Times of London:
With the atmosphere so soured by the end of the evening, the Israelis decided that they could not trust the telephone line they had been lent for their consultations. Mr Netanyahu and Ehud Barak, his Defence Minister, went to the Israeli Embassy to ensure that the Americans were not listening in.
This incident should be protested by Republican representatives because Barack Obama is endangering American national security by snubbing key allies while snuggling up to our enemies.

Blue Ridge Parkway northern end now open after winter snows

The gate is open on the Blue Ridge Parkway at Afton. Months of snowy weather kept the roadway covered during the winter of 2009-10.

The Blue Ridge Parkway passes through Augusta and Nelson Counties.

After a winter that saw six-foot drifts, only a few patches of snow remained this week.

Winter cleanup continues. This sign overlooking the Rockfish Valley is out for repair.

The mountains called on Wednesday ... and I answered. Because the Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive had been closed to vehicles for months due to a hard winter and much snow, I had been unable to get my "mountain fix" up there on a regular basis as in years past.

Barb and I met and enjoyed a long lunch in Waynesboro, and then we headed for Afton and the Blue Ridge Parkway because we had heard it was reopened after a particularly harsh winter had left snow drifts, ice, and fallen trees on the roadway.

We explored the portion from Afton Mountain to Humpback Rock farm, trail, and picnic area. The picnic area is still closed as workers clear trees and debris still covering the area.

Meanwhile, someone has been busy because trees had been cleared even though there was still much evidence in the woods along the Parkway of broken limbs, downed trees, and other ice/snow damage.

It was good to spend time on a mild day in Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains.

Dinner with the Republican ladies

Augusta County Republican Women's Club

Thursday evening was spent in Staunton at Rowe's addressing the Augusta County Republican Women's Club, and I thank them for the opportunity to expand on their theme, "One Woman Can Do Something; Many Women Can Do Anything."

They had asked that I share some of my experiences over the past 11 years of active local Republican volunteering, and I was happy to do that. I told them, however, that I was preaching to the choir because they had all been involved in the volunteer grassroots part of politics. No one person can do this. It has to be a team effort.

It was good to see familiar faces including Barb (who had been rambling along the Blue Ridge Parkway with me the day before), and I thank President Bettie Cox, Vice President Phyllis Hollowell, and the ladies for the opportunity to spend some time with them.

Weekend rally accusations by Left were wrong

Thank goodness for bloggers who track down a story when they feel it is unjustified. Such was the case after last weekend's rally on Capitol Hill when tea party folks were accused of racial slurs and even of spitting on a lawmaker.

Gateway Pundit has the latest proof it did not happen. Look at the photos ... read the proof ... and think about the reason any lawmaker would walk through a crowd of protesters when they normally use tunnels from office buildings to the Capitol.

Even after peaceful protesters denied it happened, the story continued. Were Democrats trying to bait the crowd? Taunt the crowd? What a bunch of hypocrites.

Insurance agent warns Rush about ObamaCare

If you want to learn about a subject, talk with someone well-versed in that subject. Listening to conservative talk radio offers that opportunity for millions of Americans, and ObamaCare is no differnt.

On Rush Limbaugh's Tuesday show, an insurance agent called with the dismal news of what ObamaCare will do to America. A friend alerted me to this since I was out and about and missed much of the show.

This insurance agent warns that insurance agencies may be able to hang on for two or three years before going out of business, due to the new mandated government-enforced health care forced on America. Be sure to read the interview and listen to the audio.

Rush caller nails Obama's inexperience

A caller to Rush Limbaugh's conservative talk radio show on Tuesday, talking about health care, nailed it when she said of Barack Obama:
"He's a schoolyard bully and he's got a posse in the Congress and the House and no one else is supposed to touch this golden boy that America seems to be so enamored with, and I am fed up with it."
She went on to add:
"His inexperience is so obvious -- and we're suffering for it! Because liberal America... I'll just say liberal and moderate white America, was so afraid to be called racist that they allow this nation to have the most inexperienced person ever take the highest office in the land at a time when we can least afford to have someone so incompetent at the head of our government."
As she and Rush talked back and forth, the caller reiterated the inexperience of this president:
"We're at the brink of losing what we know as America.
...
"We have been awakened. The tea party movement and the conservative movement have been awakened. This is not fun and games; this is not a reality show. This is real life, and we have got to take this country back to where it's supposed to be: Personal responsibility, limited government, letting a man work for and keep what he earns. That has to be the model that we put forward."
I missed much of Rush's show on Tuesday but a friend called this morning to alert me of this caller. Checking my Rush 24/7, I found it along with another excerpt that another firend alerted me to last night.

Check it out. Americans are not taking this lying down nor are they feeling defeated. The Community Organizer in the White House has once again rallied conservatives.

Jim Gilmore: "Financial catastrophe for the U.S."

Jim Gilmore over at The Patriot has a post, Financial catastrophe for the United States, that discusses the impact of Barack Obama's massive socialized medicine "reform" bill. He begins:
The passage of the Health Care Bill continues to dig the American public deeper into a financial hole. No matter how it is characterized, this is a vast new entitlement program, with no limits on the cost to the taxpayers of the future. Today our economic system is breaking under the weight of Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security, the entitlement society. The national debt and deficits show that we cannot go on with this welfare state. This new health bill “doubles down” on the financial problems that we must solve to restore the future of our nation.
Read it all as he explains that the only way out of this financial abyss is for Americans to once again find their independent streaks and stand on their own two feet. Good read.

Obama, Congress, staff exempted from ObamaCare

My grandmother used to say, "If it's good for the goose, it's good for the gander." Seems that would be true of mandatory health care that was forced on Americans, and the exemption of Barack Obama, Congress, and staffers.

If we have to swallow this bitter pill, so should they.

Meanwhile, Donald Douglas at American Power shows that Barack Obama is excluded from ObamaCare complete with links to other bloggers' thoughts. Talk about hypocrisy....

Mike took the words right out of my mouth

SWAC Husband grumbled Tuesday about the post card that arrived in the mail from the U.S. Government telling us we had received our census form last week.

When I read Fishersville Mike's post, he took the word right out of my mouth:
Tuesday's mail brought the postcard to remind me to fill out the census form.

Which arrived last week.

Like the letter the week before said it would.
I'm thinking of the millions and millions of dollars spent on postage for an "it's on its way" letter, the census itself, and then a "you did get it, right?" reminder.

If I ran my household like the government runs its finances, I'd be in jail.

"Party of tolerance" cancels Ann Coulter speech

The University of Ottawa had to cancel Ann Coulter's speech Tuesday night when lefty liberals protested her appearance by reportedly causing destruction and mayhem, pulling fire alarms and turning over tables. Donald Douglas at American Power has photos and links to the story.

Most of the mainstream media ignored this incident while reporting ad nauseum about a non-event in DC over the weekend with the tea party folks. Who can take them seriously?

235 years ago today ... "Give me liberty or give me death"

James Young reminds that it was 235 years ago today that Virginia patriot Patrick Henry stood in St. John's Church in Richmond and issued the words that still ring out today:
Gentlemen may cry, "Peace! Peace!" -- but there is no peace. The war is actually begun! The next gale that sweeps from the north will bring to our ears the clash of resounding arms! Our brethren are already in the field! Why stand we here idle? What is it that gentlemen wish? What would they have? Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty, or give me death!

As a young student in Chesterfield, I memorized Patrick Henry's Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death speech in 4th grade while studying Virginia history. Those powerful words have stayed with me throughout my life.

On March 11, 2007, Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling visited the SWAC area and I was the recipient of his "Patrick Henry Award," an award that was very special to me. Even today I am thankful to him for that moment in time.

Today the words still ring out, "Why stand we here idle? What is it that gentlemen wish? What would they have? Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery?"

Those who walked before us light the pathway even now at this time in history....
