While traveling this back road in western Augusta County, we found ...
... this sign warning, "City of Staunton waterline located under this sign."
Staunton's water supply comes from Elkhorn Lake located in northwestern Augusta County. In 1965, it was constructed by damming the North River to help with flood control and provide drinking water. The small 54-acre lake is owned by the city of Staunton and what we had stumbled upon was part of the miles of pipeline carrying water from the mountains to the city.
