Shenandoah National Park and Skyline Drive on a winter day....

Skyline Drive today....

Winter is a great time to explore along the Skyline Drive. Because all campgrounds and facilities are closed, there are far fewer visitors than at other time of the year. It offers an opportunity to hike in the winter woods, sit on a rock and watch to see what wildlife may show up, or just take in the view and contemplate living in such a beautiful place.
Deer tracks on the trail....
Winter woods....

The trail went through the leaves and into the woods as it climbed the mountain....

Rock outcroppings alongside the trail....

The Appalachian Trail crosses the Skyline Drive throughout Shenandoah National Park as it winds it way from Maine to Georgia.

Winter trees against a winter sky although it was mild today for a mid-January day. The starkness of the bare trees against the blue sky and clouds intrigued me....
