Merry Christmas, Mr. President

My Christmas card from President and Mrs. Bush arrived in the mail Tuesday and, while I have never blogged about receiving it before, this year I am because it is the last one.

It has been my privilege to receive a Christmas card from the Bush White House every year since 2001, thanks to my sister who was his speech writer while he was Governor of Texas, and on his communications team when he went to Washington as President.

The card this year is the view from the Truman Balcony of the White House looking toward the Washington Monument. Oil on linen, it was painted by T. Allen Lawson, and is a beautful card.

Inside under the Presidential seal is a Bible verse:
"Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." -Matthew 5:16
The greeting says:
"May your heart and home be filled with the joys of the holiday season. 2008."
It is signed, "George Bush, Laura Bush." The postmark is from Crawford, Texas.

My Christmas message to the President would be:
Thank you, President Bush, for keeping America safe. Thank you for protecting our families when terrorism struck on 9/11, when you vowed to keep American citizens safe. You have kept your promise, and you have honored us by your calm and steady leadership during the storm. You have laughed with us, cried with us, and carried the burden of the country on your shoulders the past eight years. We will be forever grateful.

Merry Christmas, Mr. President.
