January: The full wolf moon

Sunday's full moon over the Shenandoah Valley.

January is the month of the Full Wolf Moon which, according to Native American legend, appeared when wolves howled in hunger outside the villages during the time of snow and cold. It is also known as the Old Moon. To some tribes, this was the Snow Moon, but most applied that name to the next full Moon, in February.
