Gov. McDonnell to host Small Business Summit

Governor Bob McDonnell today announced that he will host the Governor’s Small Business Summit in Richmond Wednesday, June 5, 2013. The Summit is co-hosted by the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) and will be held during ‘Business Appreciation’ week in Virginia. The summit will bring together small businesses to discuss challenges and opportunities for small business owners in the Commonwealth. The summit is part of Governor McDonnell’s commitment to ensure Virginia is the best place to own and operate a small business in the nation.

Speaking about the summit, Governor McDonnell said, “Small businesses are the key to Virginia’s economic health and prosperity. Roughly 95 percent of businesses in the Commonwealth are classified as small businesses, and they create the vast majority of new Virginia jobs every year. Last month, unemployment in Virginia fell to 5.3 percent, the lowest since 2008. By creating a pro-business environment, preserving Virginia’s Right to Work status, and making strategic investments in transportation, economic development, and higher education, Virginia has reinforced its position as the best state for small business owners to open, expand or relocate their business. This summit, which will be held during ‘Business Appreciation Week’ in Virginia, is an important opportunity to examine what more can be done to promote the efforts of small business owners in the Commonwealth.”

“In October of 2011, Governor McDonnell hosted a Small Business Summit in Richmond featuring panels on procurement, technology, key issues, and funding,” said Nicole Riley, Virginia state director of the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB). “The results were very positive, and NFIB is pleased to partner with Governor McDonnell to host a second summit. With significant headwinds still hampering economic growth nationwide, Virginia must remain focused on addressing issues that matter to small businesses.”
