Killed in action ... Master Sgt. (Ret.) Donald A. Barger from Augusta County

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — After 23 years of service, Master Sgt. (Ret.) Donald A. Barger, 40, husband of Denise (Coffey) Barger of Fayetteville, N.C., formerly of Augusta County, Va., was killed in action Saturday, May 10, 2008, while serving his country overseas. He was born June 23, 1967, in Augsburg, Germany, a son of Theresia (Jäger) Barger of Mint Spring, Va., and the late Donald R. Barger.

In addition to his wife and mother, family members include a daughter, Tess E. Barger; two sons, Elijah G. and Ethan Gunner Barger, all of Fayetteville; a brother, Richard L. Barger of Staunton, Va.; his stepmother-in-law, Beverley C. Coffey of Greenville, Va.; a sister-in-law, Terri C. Kuykendall of Richmond, Va.; brothers-in-law, Mike W. Coffey and his wife, Carol Sue, of Charlottesville, Va., and Justin S. Coffey of Greenville; and nieces and nephews, Joshua, Hunter and Leah Kuykendall and Benjamin and Griffin Coffey.

A memorial service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, May 16, 2008, in Mint Spring United Methodist Church by the Rev. Steven Propst. Burial will follow in Thornrose Cemetery with military honors conducted by the 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne).

Memorial contributions may be made to Mint Spring United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 14, Mint Spring, VA 24463.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday, May 15, 2008, at the home of his mother. There will be no public viewing.
