First Homeschool Winner of the Meade Scholarship

David Delane Jones of Waynesboro is the first-ever homeschool winner of the Granville P. Meade scholarship. David graduated in the commencement ceremonies at the 2012 HEAV convention in Richmond.

Homeschooled since the seventh grade, David is a member of several honor societies, advanced to the nationals in the National Bible Bee three years in a row, and obtained a Master Diver certification at age 16. He ministers at a Hispanic church by assisting with computers, playing drums, and designing Spanish graphic arts. David plans to major in marine science at Old Dominion University before pursuing graduate studies.

HEAV worked with the Virginia Department of Education and the State Council of Higher Education to develop a mechanism to handle the selection process for homeschoolers. David was one of several students to receive an $8,000 scholarship to be used at a Virginia public or private college.
