LTE: Situation in Iraq Calls for Patience

Hear, hear! From today's Richmond Times-Dispatch:

Editor, Times-Dispatch:

Without President George Bush's bold and effective leadership of the cause of democratic freedom, the worldwide aggression of fanatic Islamic terrorism would have seized control of the entire Middle East, leaving Israel vulnerable to total annihilation. Only the presence of U.S. armed forces in Iraq has prevented the occupation of all the Middle East by Islamic terrorism.

The current call for the withdrawal of our troops from Iraq by Democrats is insane. Not only have terrorists struck the U.S. several times already at home and abroad, they have also launched attacks against Spain and Britain.

The Iranians have already threatened to wipe Israel off the map. What choice will Israel have when Iran acquires nuclear capability -- but to take it out? An American withdrawal from Iraq would provide the terrorists with a great victory that would undoubtedly be followed by many more attacks in the U.S. and elsewhere.

Substantial progress is now being made toward an effective government in Iraq that will reasonably soon be able to maintain its freedom and democracy.
